View Full Version : What's Sheffield S8 like? Glennis 24-05-2005, 17:50 I am selling my current house and am thinking of buying in Meersbrook/Norton/Meadowhead area. Can anyone tell me a bit about the arae? Cheers Glennis msbehavin 24-05-2005, 18:59 It's fandabidosi!! Msb lives in S8, as do certain other select forummers  There are lots of pubs  The shops at Woodseats are many and varied :) You get any number of buses into town  Just keep an eye out for the underground springs.. bigbifter 24-05-2005, 20:09 i think nortons your best bet Shiesh 24-05-2005, 20:11  S8   We are all very happy here...come and join us I am sure you will be too!!! :P Applegrim 24-05-2005, 21:06 They have been the happiest days of my life, lovely people, great shopping center, good schools and only a short walk to two parks, brilliant doctors and dentists and not forgetting a good selection of pubs for all ages, anything you want you'll find here. Strix 24-05-2005, 21:08 We looked at a few houses round there, but it was further from the M1 than we really wanted to be :( We particularly liked Meadowhead  Voise 25-05-2005, 14:53 Originally posted by Applegrim They have been the happiest days of my life, lovely people, great shopping center, good schools and only a short walk to two parks, brilliant doctors and dentists and not forgetting a good selection of pubs for all ages, anything you want you'll find here. I second that. Great for families btw. Rich 25-05-2005, 19:06 In my experience Norton is crap for buses... I went up there about 8 years ago for a school re-union at Gleadless Valley (some re-union, there was only me wot turned up :loopy: ), and it took me 3 hours to get home to Walkley cos the buses never bleedin' turned up near the shops on Blackstock Road... And I knew to get a 48 bus from there into Town cos that's where we got it from on a Friday when we used to go bowling at Firth Park from school in the 4th and 5th years. Oh dear...sorry to hear about your non-eventful school re-union...I have heard buses are poor in Norton but very good for Woodseats. :P Andy 25-05-2005, 21:38 Originally posted by Rich In my experience Norton is crap for buses... I know of people who were born, grew up, live their adult lives in Woodseats and I'm aware that a lot of the residents all seem to know one another. As I understand it the local schools are good and there are a decent selection of shops to choose from including several supermarkets in the immediate vicinity. The three big council estates just past Norton are Jordanthorpe, Batemoor and Low Edges and this site will give you loads of info on these and the area's you've expressed interest in. t020 26-05-2005, 00:28 Originally posted by msbehavin Rich makes me laugh sooo much, bless 'im!! Yes, he has the same effect on me. :hihi: Glennis 26-05-2005, 09:54 Thanks everyone, this sounds like just the sort of place i am looking for. Cheers Glennis basshedz2 26-05-2005, 10:43 Originally posted by Andy I don't think you can judge todays buses based on one journey 8 years ago, can you? :suspect: To be fair though, I live just up from Meersbrook park and since they changed the 20 they are pretty bad. I did use to live just off abbeydale road though - never any problem getting buses from there. To answer the original question, S8 is lovely. Meersbrook park and Graves park are excellent places to spend time in, the streets are usually nice and quiet (at least around where i live), woodseats has some good little shops - and tesco, sainsbury, and morrisons are all really close. I'm very happy having moved here. b Ann* 27-05-2005, 04:56 Isn't S8 where you see a trellis panel with legs wandering the streets on a Sunday afternoon, and visiting the local pubs in the area? :hihi: EyeSpy 27-05-2005, 06:56 I have lived in Norton lees for the last 3 years and have to say the area is great. Numerous shops close by, several pubs all within walking distance and in fairness although i have never caught one, the buses seem pretty regular. Schools are good, neighbours are fine, it is clean and there is a neighbourhood watch programme. House prices have risen dramatically in the time i have lived here, purchased my house for £110k and recently had it valued and it is now valued at £185k. Tidy little profit should i ever wish to move soon, although i have no reason to. t020 27-05-2005, 11:32 Originally posted by EyeSpy House prices have risen dramatically in the time i have lived here, purchased my house for £110k and recently had it valued and it is now valued at £185k. Not really because other houses will have increased in value by similar proportions (unless you plan to sell up and live on the streets). burny 29-05-2005, 17:25 Hiya, Lived in Meersbrook for about a year and found it had a HUGE car theft / vandalism problem... mainly cars! Woodseats and Norton seem fine though :0) AndyK 29-05-2005, 18:08 I can recommend Meersbrook if only for the wonderful Walled Garden in Meersbrook Park, which is being beautifully restored with the help of Heeley City Farm and the Meersbrook Park Users Trust. The Council used it as a general dumping ground and car park for all their Ranger Vehicles until they were forced out by the local community. It has three wonderfull Dawn Redwood trees and a fabulous new Herb Garden. There is a Walled Garden Garden Party up there with food, music and fun on Sunday 5th June @1.00pm. Come along . The Walled Garden is at the Brook Road entrance to the Park, just walk up the path to the right to the gates. It is an oasis with a secret sunken garden and many other attractions including a large tropical glasshouse. Well done to everyone involved!! I have a bit of a flash car (!) Musey 30-05-2005, 20:14 I've lived in Meersbrook for 3 years now and had my car broken into once but then it was kinda my own fault cos I'd left my purse on the front seat by mistake. Other than that we love it here. Musey 30-05-2005, 20:16 Originally posted by t020 Not really because other houses will have increased in value by similar proportions (unless you plan to sell up and live on the streets). Good point, the profit angle only works if you sell now and rent until (if) prices drop. jojojoanna1 31-05-2005, 17:35 im moving to sheffield soon also in the woodseats area ( well i think it is) im just off chesterfield road near a closed down petrol station , are there any decent pubs in (lazy woman steps ) walking distance , iv only visited the property once and there didnt seen to be a local shop or pub near unless you have a car of course , is this right does anyone know or am i going in the wrong direction Applegrim 31-05-2005, 19:44 I think you must mean the petrol station opposite Derbyshire lane. and your quite right they aren't many supermarkets just there, there's a chemist and next door is a shop that sells most things, but it's not a supermarket, round the corner higher up is Homebase, lower down the road is a couple of bistro type places, a butchers, a tool shop, and a sauna. The nearest supermarket is a small Tesco at Woodseats, or the next larger supermarkets are Sainsbury's and Tesco on Archer Road. lazyfish 01-06-2005, 07:16 Originally posted by jojojoanna1 im moving to sheffield soon also in the woodseats area ( well i think it is) im just off chesterfield road near a closed down petrol station , are there any decent pubs in (lazy woman steps ) walking distance , iv only visited the property once and there didnt seen to be a local shop or pub near unless you have a car of course , is this right does anyone know or am i going in the wrong direction White Lion on Chesterfield Road, five minutes' walk towards the city, on your right. Excellent pub. Also, if you head up Derbyshire Lane (just opposite the closed-down petrol station), there's a corner shop (newsagent/grocer type place) just on the next corner, then a Chinese and an offy. None of them are brilliant, but they're there. It's a great area but it's true that there isn't much around there in the way of local shops. If you want a slightly bigger grocery type place (without it being like a big supermarket) then there's nothing other than the Co-Op on the other side of Meersbrook Park. Nice walk though. :) Foxxx 01-06-2005, 11:26 I live in S8 and love it. Bought at the right time as it has become very popular now and prices have risen a lot since I bought my house. I'm near the top end of Meersbrook park in Norton Lees. The park is fantastic, just sitting in it on a summer's evening looking at the view is amazing. Shops are ok, we have co-op for most things we need, and there's corner shops on Derbyshire lane too. Buses are ok in the area. Depends where you decide to buy. If you're not far off Chesterfield road (A61) then you have a big choice of frequent buses. If you go more for in the heart of Meersbrook, Norton Lees, woodseats, the buses aren't as frequent but frequent enough. If you want a more Town feel then Woodseats is good because it's got its own high street, but Woodseats can be more expensive than other areas in S8. Just one word of caution, if you buy in S8, beware of leasehold houses owned by Estates and Management! See thread here previous thread (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8757&perpage=15&pagenumber=1) don't let that put you off though, other areas in Sheffield and the country are also affected. |
