Can't remember its name..........used to go there in the early 70's.

It had fags from all over the world as well as loads of different pipe baccy.....used to smell wonderful.

Remember buying those Russian fags, Sobranie?....two brands - black with gold filters and the cocktail variety. And Mahawats from Egypt I think....long and thin in liquorice papers.

Happy days.

We used to have on of those in my old town!! It was owned by this local rich old guy, and he gave the business to his daughter, who unfortunately sold it debenhams so they could have 1 more department... gits!! It used to have tobacco in every flavour imaginable!!

There's only one shop left like that, that I know of, and it's in the Poultry Market in Derby (the one opposite the eagle centre, near the assembly rooms) - but it's quite pricey these days...

I wish it was still there!!

I have found two places though which sell flavoured tobaccos. One is a gift / funky stuff type shop on the right as you walk down to the Moor. The other is opposite Castle Market. The Castle Market one has a lot more choice.

I like flavoured baccy once in a while.

There was relatively recently, a small shop with bizarre opening hours and a not over friendly proprietor in Fulwood. It sold cigars, tobaccos and some very nice wines. If I recall the chap who ran it was German, relatively old. It was just in the parade of shops, set back slightly from the road. I wouldn't like to say if it's still there though.

Sylvesters?

Yes, it was indeed Sylvester's, at No 41 Surrey Street, just before the Channing Hall. I'm not sure what is there now (GT News is at 23 Surrey Street). My late father used to buy his tobacco from Sam Sylvester in the 1930s; he died long ago. I remember the sign in the window "We cater 100% for the smoker" and you could get the most exclusive brands of cigarette there (such as Wills' "Passing Clouds" which I used to smoke in the 1960s) and also unusual, hard-to-get tobaccos such as Latakia, sold loose by the ounce. Memories...

I used to buy Blue Book fags from there. In a pack of 20, you'd get 4 from each of 5 different countries.

I've an idea that Sylvesters was run by Bewlay's (in the High street) for a little while before it finally closed. I recollect that I bought a few Peterson pipes from Sylvesters for less than half price because they were deemed 'seconds' - but I never could see what was wrong with them.

The shop on Exchange street is good for pipe baccy and he also has a good range of cigars.

Yes, there is one at the Chesterfield end of the Dronfield by-pass, name passes me now but if you take the exit onto the old road into Chesterfield (the one after the dual carriageway) the shop is almost immediately on your left. It also sells fancy goods as well as a good selection of baccys.

I used to go into the one on Surrey St., Sylvester's, and remember the little weighing scales they used to weigh the loose tobacco which they sold------which, as far as I recall was
' Brown Shag ' and ' Black Shag '. Both were very cheap [ even with the cost of Rizla
papers ! ]and the latter variety almost blew your head off ! I can't remember the staff clearly but I think it was always a very pleasant middle-aged lady who served me.
There was also a tiny ' hole in the wall ' tobacconist at the junction of Ecclesall Road and Sharrowvale Road, very near to NatWest. Anybody remember it ? Might be still there ?
I suppose a lot of tobacconists have been closed down by the Health & Safety Task Force Co-ordinators, launching dawn swoops and putting the proprietors on trial------they've probably been replaced by a McDonalds or an estate agent's.

Yes I remember the little hole in the wall one near Hunters Bar - I used to use it in the late 70's when I lived near City College.

Think it's been gone a good 10 - 15 years.

I remember Sylvester's--I only ever smoked a pipe and I used to get good quality tobaccos from there. It was a friendly place and you could even have brief natter about this or that. They also stocked clay pipes and I bought several there. The shop went not long before I gave up smoking, so I haven't really been looking for alternative supplies.

I loved the scent in there, and the rows of containers stocking all the varieties of tobacco.

There's a real old fashioned tobacconists still trading in Selby, just a little place, but packed with every variety of tobacco imaginable and it smells lovely. They sell antiquated brands such as Parson's Pleasure Pipe (snigger).

I also remember a tobacconist up to about 2000 on High Street (where Timpsons is now) just down from NatWest, and another down by Castle Market which had a great selection of pipes more recently.

I remember the one on High Street, near to where Walsh's store was. When I went in with my mum, I remember seeing all the jars with different tobaccoes from exotic places. It had a smell all of its' own.

Yes - on the corner of George Street. In the 1960s/70s it was a branch of Bewlays, though I think that Bewlays took over an older business.

Actually by an opticians, but I see what you mean!

My particular favourite tobacco was called Irish Cream - or maybe Celtic Cream, can't remember - which had been steeped in whiskey.
Even if you didn't smoke it, the aroma was enough to fell you!
Beautiful.....

Old "Ducky" Sylvester used to live in Froggatt village two doors up from me in the 40s and 50s.He was a keen golfer and lent me an old club and a ball.I was about 8/9 years old then and whacked the ball through his front room window. Can't remember if I got whacked or not.:hihi:
He signed an autograph book for me with the saying " It's a wise sardine that knows it's own tin"!
Whatever that means,but I've never forgot it.:D

The shop you mean was in Ranmoor between the Bull's Head and the Ranmoor Inn.He is German, called Michel Menzels and had a wine bar down Ecclesall Road. He's a nice feller when you get to know him.I live in the Isle of Man now but always make a point of seeing him in the "Ranny" when I go over.

I went in an oldfashioned tobbaconists in Chester a few weeks ago and the smell took me straight back to buying Back Russians in Sylvesters in the 70's.The one at Hunters Bar was called Bar Tabac.

I still smoke black Sobranie cigs! Buy them from a traditional tobaccanist in Doncaster! I wish that there was still such a shop in Sheffield - must be the biggest city without a proper tobacconists! The Doncaster one has that amazing tobacco smell - the fruit ones, the spiced ones, nothing smells like a proper tobacconist

Yeah I remember it well (except what it was called) We used to buy Gitanes, Mahawat and Disque Bleu from there in the mid 70s to smoke in the Penthouse club on Friday night in an attempt to impress the girls with our debonair sophistication.

Think it's been gone a good 10 - 15 years. l used to treat my old dad to a few ounce of Balkan Sobranie it was fairly expensive but his eyes used to light up when l gave it to him, he loved it, and it did smell good when he lit up, l would not leave till l had a good sniff. Does anyone remember the machines that dispensed 2 woodbines and 2 matches for penny in a slim green box, then there was the open paper packet with 5 cigs for twopence. Cheers everyone Arfer Mo.

When I was a young teacher,in the 1970's, my payday treat was 20 Black Russians from Sylvesters. I still savour the aroma even though I no longer smoke.

yes, l think when one has quit and got over the withdrawal symptoms, its the aroma of nice tobacco that still lingers in the mind l keep thinking about starting again after thirty years without, at 87 this year they would not have time to do me much harm , then l think of the price and think NO chance.Arfer Mo

It was Whitbread's brewery not Tennants.
