I've had a week with the lurgy during which I ran out of the right sort of knitting. I needed something very plain and thoughtless but when I got to the end of the scarf I was stuck. I couldn't start something new because it needed too much thinking about and everything I had on the needles was too much like work.

What do you do when your knitting stalls? I had to fall back on mindless tv and computer games (and what a waste of time that was) but I can't help thinking that there should have been something really simple I should have turned to. Should I have had a prescription for a hat?

Get a french knitting thingy and sit and make tons of, well, french knitting, or 'i-chord'

Simple knitting: basic, no pattern needed socks in thickish yarn. Useful for bed socks if the lurgy keeps you there.

Been there, done that. I had a rug three feet by four feet by the time I was done. My excuse is that I was very young at the time. I found the leftovers a few years ago and they came in very handy for making straps for little bags for the Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes.

If I couldn't knit I would (and do) crochet. Much easier to do lying down than knitting, you only move one hand really (or at least I do) and you can do a basic hat, square, blanket or whatever pattern without even really looking at it all.

Have a clean and tidy house knitting is so much more fun
