Right, I have a mission, I am searching for the perfect pub in sheffield, preferably within walking distance of Walkley, I'm looking for a pub which has:

Good food and a variety of food, including veggie meals.

A homely atmosfere (no chain pubs!)

Real Ale

A no smoking section

Little or no Sports (bloody Sky Football!)

Not too crowded with idiots.

Now I have tried the Fat Cat (portions too small & expensive) and The Devonshire cat (they have hiked the prices up and they think "salad" is suitable as the only main course for veggie food) and the Old Grindstone (hard to get to)

Can anyone think of any others worth a try?

If you find one - let me know!

I reckon if someone opened up a Sheaf View type pub in Walkley - they'd make a fortune - pubs are pretty tradional up there (and I dont mean in a real ale/beardy sort of tradional!)

Hillsborough Hotel ticks most (if not all) of those boxes I think. The food is the only one I'm not sure about - but it's a hotel so they'd probably oblige if you gave them some notice. I'd be surprised if there was no veggie option at all.

Definitely walkable from Walkley (arguably it's in Walkley rather than Hillsborough - Langsett Rd/bottom of Burgoyne Rd). The beer is fantastic.

Does Kelham Island Tavern do food? If so that would be another one. Also the Riverside.

New Barrack Tavern also ticks all those boxes (also walkable from Walkley) and definitely has a veggie option. It looks a bit grim from the outside but inside it's really nice and the beers are top quality.

Kelham Island does food lunchtimes Tuesday - Friday and has a large no-smoking room. The Riverside does food lunchtimes and evenings and usually has a good selection although check the opening times.

It's tradtional pub fare but done well. I think the atmosphere in there is a bit lacking as its too bright.

The fat cat too expensive? Didn't it win some bargain food award or something a few years ago? Has it changed?

Kelham - food's fairly basic, with a few more elaborate dishes thrown in.

Rutland is also good - lots of choices for veggies etc... and a lot is defiantely home made.

Howabout the Rivelin Hotel?

Quiet, countryside boozer with real-ales, nice beer garden with lovely views and the food has always been good whenever I've been. (A while ago now since my last visit though.)

It's also a quiet pub (esp. at lunch), no televisions or juke-boxes blaring all day.

And it's a pleasant summer evening's walk from Walkley.
