View Full Version : Advice needed on male dog
mistyraven 05-11-2008, 06:27 I have a male lapa apso he is seven yrs old for the past three month he keeps cocking his leg up everything in my home, and I just dont know why:suspect: I have bought sprays and shouted at him:rant:
Someone told me they do it because they need to mark there spot:huh:
Why do it? how many spots will it take before he stops?
Should I take him to a vet?
He is well fed seems happy likes his own way got everything a dog could want so why repay me like this:huh:
Any advice would help thanks Misty
puddinburner 05-11-2008, 08:08 It is natural when a dog reaches a certain age, I'm afraid, nothing you can do about the actual leg bit.
They have to mark they're scent as high as possible so other dogs know it's HIS patch.
There's a time and place though and it's not usually in the house!!!
Try clicker training? You get a clicker from any good pet shop...easy to use. Each time he does something good...click and reward with a small treat, he will soon associate the click with good behaviour.
Then each time he cocks, click!!!! This should distract him from what he was about to do, he should come to you straight away for his treat instead!
That's the only advice I know, which may work...Good Luck!
Click before the dutty act not after of course!
Moonbird 05-11-2008, 11:10 Just wondering if anything has changed in the family, more animals/people? less animals/people? sometimes its a bit of insecurity or even perhaps assertiveness, I am sure that someone will be along who knows a bit more just something to think about for now.
dogs usually do this (even bitches) if they're given too much 'responsibility'
if your dog thinks he's running the show, or has a free run of the whole house whilst you're out, this could be the root of the problem
It often happens with small dogs as people are less inclined to make sure a small dog doesn't get dominant ideas
there are a few really good threads on here already if you hunt about a bit
I take it he is entire? All entire dogs feel the need to scent mark, he only needs to do it once and then he will carry on unless you either find a good product to get rid of the smell or have him castrated.
Scent marking is hormonal and perfectly natural to a dog who is entire. Safe 4 is a good product to use, but you have to know exactly where he has marked in your house to make sure you get rid of the scent.
Just to add a bit about the clicker training, this is used to mark "wanted" behaviour, the click "signals a reward" so the dog will think he is being rewarded for cocking his leg which is what you dont want. Clicker training is not used for distraction.
mistyraven 06-11-2008, 12:30 Thanks everyone.
We moved home about five months ago but he still doing it.
Yea he thinks he is the topdog he is seven you think he would know not to do this.
If I had him done then would that stop him? I did price it up at the vets but its £150 and bit skint.
I will try that spray I dont think clicker would be any good now.
He is very stubbon and likes to be topdog, like I said he reminds me of an very old man, saying that old men dont cock leg up x
*Peaches* 06-11-2008, 12:53 has he been stud recently?
SpeedDemon 06-11-2008, 15:04 Misty thats VERY expensive for neutering. My neighbour just had their springer boy done, it was about £69!

we didn't pay that price at peak vets
mistyraven 06-11-2008, 21:28 SpeedDemon where did you have your dog done?
I had the price from Springfield vets firth park.
I have just had a kichen fitted and I am behind him waiting to see if cocks his leg up on it, I wont be happy with him.

Agreed! I only paid that much for a FEMALE to be neutered, which is
a ) a lot dearer than for a male.
b ) A far more "major" operation on a female than on a male.
SpeedDemon 07-11-2008, 11:09 Hey misty - the neighbours dog was done at spire vets at chesterfield. It's not far from this end of the city, just on the end of Dronfield bypass - but even though you're the other side of Sheffield, if you've got transport, they're really worth using, much cheaper than anywhere else I've found. They quoted me about £90 for my bitch to be spayed, and as others have said, a bitch is always more expensive. The price goes on weight, so your little dog may well be cheaper than the neighbours spaniel, although he's not huge, only a pup. Spire's number is 01246 455333 - worth giving them a ring and asking for a price.
I just thought I'd add to this:
Whilst I've never owned an entire male dog I have spoken to various people and always sort of knew it 'as one of those things' that neutering helps to stop this and my neutered boy doesn't do it (but he was done early so probably never started it either).
I don't know whether neutering now will be as effective because he's now already started it, but this is worth finding out. I'm not saying it won't be, but I'm saying it's something to think about.
Also, I have a spayed bitch who still (only occasionally) will scent mark things - never in our house, but she's done it a couple of times when visiting others and always marks things outside (but then so does my neutered male).
All I'm saying is don't expect neutering to sort the problem out, it may well help in the training but it probably won't stop just because he's been done.
