View Full Version : Java RTE Performance

I have the latest version of Sun Microsystem's Java RTE but the performance is shockingly slow ever since I upgraded from the old version. My PC spec is relatively good so does anyone know what could be causing it? e.g. applets taking about 10 times longer to open than pre-upgrade.

I'm afraid I had the same problem when I downloaded it.

I eventually reverted to the previous version and things were OK again.

Do you happen to know where I could get the install file for the older version?

Which is the "old" version?

If it's 1.4.2, then I've got the installer somewhere round here.

I could put it online somewhere if you need it?

Thanks. I have version 1.5 but wasn't sure about the old version's name. I've found the downloadable install file for 1.4.2 now though so I'll have a go at rolling back to that. Thanks anyway.

For future reference for people with a similar problem - rolling back to 1.4.2 works and the performance is acceptable again. Not really a solution though.

Was this on all versions of Windows, or only NT/ME/XP?

ie. did you try on a Win 98 box?

Glad you got it sorted.

Expect a new version shortly (as people make remonstrations to SUN);).

it's generally called a JRE (Java Runtime Environment), had me puzzled for a minute.
I've not had a problem with 1.5, but it's only recently out so there might be some bugs still to iron out.

Had the problem on NT / ME - didn't bother trying it on 98 or XP.

I should have added that I was running this on a measly 96Mb P3 (ME) or a 64Mb RAM P2. (NT)

But of course, Java is suppsoed to be resource efficient, isn't it? ;)

Hmm, I'm running 1.5.02 and I'm running the sodaplay java web install, and it's gobbling up precisely 28MB

once again no problems here.

What applets were you having trouble with t020 (example)?

All that I came across, an example being the chat room on this site. They all started to take roughly 10 times longer to load. I use Windows XP by the way.

Did you uninstall the previous version? From what i remember previous upgrades from sun didn't remove the older versions of the JRE.
