My bb provider is Plusnet and I keep getting a 721 error when trying to connect. The help desk tell me this is due to my dsl modem losing synch and to cure it I should re-install the drivers.

It is happening more often now. Does anyone have a simple solution such as get a new modem? Or am I condemned to a life of re-installing drivers?

Hiya Max,

What's the modem?

Some of them are pants but I'm not entirely sure how re-installing modem drivers will cure synchronisation problems. Does it mutter about PPP at all? If that's the case it is a synchronisation problem, but I don't know how the reinstallation of drivers will fix it, unless it's to get newer drivers!

Obvious things to look at -

Are your microfilters in place?
Have you added anything to the phone circyuits in your house?
Is there anything rubbing against the phone line outside - leaves, branches, etc. Any noise on the phone line?
If USB, is the port sourcing enough current for the modem?

Thanks for the response Joe. Nothing's changed in the last 8 months since I moved here but the problem is becoming more frequent.

It's a Dynamode A360 (Native ATM Mode) modem.

I don't actually install new drivers just re-install off the disc and yes it does seem to clear the fault albeit after moe than 1 re-install sometimes.

Yes, all microfilters in place.
Added a cordless phone to the circuit but the problem started a few months after that.
I'll check for leaves on the line (joke) but I will check.
How do I check that the USB is sourcing enough current?

This was the reason for my internet going on the blink big time earlier this year max.
My digital cordless phone was working fine but my internet connection started 'fading' out and then coming back again. After running every test possible test, BT finally asked me to try a normal phone in the socket.

Everything went back to normal :?
That phone cost me £100 too!

Now i have a new one and everything is fine

Hi Max,

When we started having ADSL problems at The Towers it was because the insulation on the VERY old cabling between house and pole had perished and was providing a rather neat leakage path for signals...:)

With respect to the USB, not easy. If you can, disconnect everything else form the USB sockets on your PC and see if that makes any difference. This will reduce the current drain on the USB interface. Having said that, low current usually results in random resets of the modem or lock-ups. If this DOES appear to make a difference, try borrowing or begging a powered hub and stick the modem in to that, and see if that works better.

721 is often a problem with your local bt exchange m8 - have plusnet tested the line for you?

It seems to refer to something to do with PPP framing / syncing as far as I remember. That runs on the server at the exchange.

I would have thought though that that wouldn't be correctable by reloading drivers.

Thanks for all your help. I'll log it with plusnet, again, and see if they come up with anything sensible.

As to other usbs I'll try removing them.

Just had a look and found out there are no cables between the house and, well there's no pole either. I think it must come in through some sort of trunking. Been here 8 months and never noticed there are no telephone poles in the street.

I'll try removing the phone later.
