Could anyone please tell me where I can train to be a plasterer in Sheffield? I work full time so it would have to be at night or if it was a 2 week intensive course I could take the time off as holiday.

Don't know were in Sheffield probably Sheffield College (whoop's near end of term again about time they changed). But Rotherham College of Art and Technology do it but I don't know if they will just in the evening. Yet again end of term though.

You have to go to college either in Roherham, Doncaster or Barnsley and do the full 2 years course if you want to be any good at it and get work.
Almost all buiding sites require you to have a cics card to work for them and you can only get that by going to college.
My o/h is a plasterer and people in the trade just laugh at these 'intensive courses' because you learn nothing and you're work would be of such a poor standard you're customers wouldnt recommend you.
If you really want to do it, the only way is to do it properly at college, or if you're lucky, find a plastering firm that is willing to take you on and learn you on the job, but again it wouldnt be an 'overnight' thing and you wouldnt gain the card needed to work on sites etc.

You will get work whether you do your training either at college or on an intensive course, if your a good plasterer, you're a good plasterer however you did your training.

True if you're good at it then you're good at it, but he needs to have enough practice and skill to become a good plasterer, this cant be gained on a 5day course.

True, but my parner did a intensive course and business is great. So either way is a good way.

Listen to Sam, its good advice :)

I've been plastering 25 years and been to college, trust me you can't learn to plaster in 5 days.
5 days :gag: it makes me laugh,
Go to college, its now Rotherham , this is the only way to learn, if you want to learn how to skim a square metre of plaster board then do a short course :D

on the left hand side you will see postcode search. I've had a quick look and theres a few in Sheffield, but there's also one at Chesterfield college. Take a look and see what you think.

Too right smoky. Too many people being wrongly 'sucked' into these short courses thinking they'll become plasterers, electricians, plumbers, gas fitters.

There will be some that make it but not for the large majority.....

Went on a 4 day course back in 2003, never looked back since, the course learnt me the basics of how to mix, what tools I needed etc after the course I did some small jobs around the house and for friends etc - I then started advertising for business back then it was very busy, I got the business then took on an experienced plasterer, I laboured for him for 2 to 3 months time by which time I was almost better than him, he was a poor tradesmen though so this was not hard, I applied myself by eating breathing and sleeping plastering, this speeded up my learning process, I am now a plastering contractor, I run my business in west london, working in kensington, bayswater, holland park etc

I know I am probably the execption to the rule but the 4 day course worked for me, I agree with all the other spreads on here that you can't go on a 4 day course and start working on site or doing big jobs, 4 day courses give you a good idea of if you want to be a plasterer my advice would be to find the cheapest, I think some do 1 and 2 day skimming courses, go on one of these just to see if you like plastering, cos its messy and hard graft, if you enjoyed it you could ring around plastering firms and start working as a plasterers labourer like the traditional route into plastering, I think there is a place for these courses but the people that run them should be honest with people, you can't be a be a top spread after 4 days it does takes years.

I have worked with a 63 year old 45 year plasterer who was one of the worst plasterers I ever saw, he couldn't do anything right, ok he was probably past his best but it proves that experience isn't everything.

I've now trained several plasters myself and have found that its very much down to the individual, there will always be good tradesmen and poor tradesmen, at least if you learn at a decent short course school you should learn the right way to do things, if you learn the traditional way by labouring for a plasterer and he is a poor tradesmen you will pick up a lot of bad habits which may take you years to get over or even ruin your chances of success.

Find a decent school if you are determined to go on one, I know there is a new place in handsworth which looks like a good place, they are promising nvq qualified staff which is who you want to learn from & I think they do the 1 & 2 day skimming courses, there phone number is: 0114 242 0051 - website is www.fspd.co.uk

Hope this helps.

my uncle worked at forgemasters from the age of 16 and well into his early 40's he took redundancey about 5 years ago and went on one of these courses (not sure which company) he is now self employed and doing very well,he is even learning my cousin (his son) the trade and he is also doing ok so it goes to show they can work or some people.
