Hi, I have a compaq presario PC, about 3-4 years old. I have just got a Dell flat screen monitor from a friend as I had the old type of monitor. Anyway, I have connected it up and the display read "Cannot Display This Video Mode".
Can anyone help? Does this mean the monitor is not compatible? Or does it mean I will simply have to reconnect my old monitor and change some settings?
I have tried google, but not being very technical and being very blonde I have no idea what some of the results are talking about!
I have left it plugged in for now and am using my lappy.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
If the PC is as old as you say it is, its probably running in 800x600 which should be fine for a TFT monitor.
Your best bet is to shut down your PC, plug in the Dell monitor, and power up.
If there's text or anything (windows logo etc) on screen, you know the dell monitor works ok.
If this is the case, restart your PC again, and keep tapping F8 from the moment you turn it on, you will eventually get a menu. You need to choose windows safe mode.
Let us know if you can get into here ok :)

In this safe mode screen it may be better picking the safe mode - VGA option. then once in right click a space on the desktop (background picture) properties> display> then set resolution up high 1024x768 might be the max on that PC.. 1280 x 1024 would be the next option

Thanks- it worked. God I am so daft sometimes. Why didn't I just use my brain in the first place and reboot?
