Carter is 12 days old now, but he is suffering really bad wind. Im breastfeeding and have cut out alot of food, I had to with my last 2 cause they were the same (but not this bad). I have cut out chocolate, garlic, fizzy pop, spicy food stopped drinking coffee and tea.... But he is still bad, crying all the time and bringing his knees to his belly trying to push. Has anyone have this problem? Is there anything else i can do?

Yes, it does sound like colic (wind) and Infacol or Gripe Water would certainly help.

Can he have it though being only 12 days? I thought Gripe water was 3months+

I think infacol is ok from birth.

Gripe water is from 1 month - Lewis didn't suffer until then anyway. I had infacol but he didn't like it. :)

For dd 4 I had to give up dairy stuff. She was really bad with wind, and what I suspect was silent reflux though. It helped her a lot. DS2 had a lot of wind too, and was quite a sicky baby. I tried giving up dairy - but it made no odds for him! He just grew out of it at about 5 months LOL Hope yo get it sorted - wind/tummy pains can be such a problem.
Oh just another thought, I discovered I had an overactive let down and oversupply issues too with DD4. Feeding her from one side at a time (sometimes sticking to that side for a few feeds even) helped sort that out and that helped LOADS with her wind/tummy pain. Not sure if that is at all relevant !

So...

What a breastfeeding mum eats affects the milk? Is that right?

Yes. What you eat/drink passes into your breasmilk in varying dgrees. Many babies react badly to things like onion, spicy food etc... Also some ( fewer) babies have some level of intolerance to certain foods such as dairy. When the mum eats dairy foods, there will be traces in the breastmilk which effect the baby.
Also some things as well as passing into the breastmilk can effect your supply ( such as alcohol and some medications) which is why it is not a good idea to take anything when BF without double checking.

Yep it sure does. A lot of things can pass through the milk.

I would have thought that by the time the food mum had eaten had been filtered through the body and everything then there wouldnt be much left to affect the baby...

Hi emtink All my children were quite windy in the beginging. The best thing is to try cutting out one thing at a time instead of anything with the potential. Everthing affects people diffrently. Unless he is getting upset by it it wouldnt panic either. Also he maybe gulping milk. Mine were all good at that. if he is doing that wind him more often and halway through a feed if you have to. If he is getting upset then a tummy rub or bath should settle him. With the trumps mine all did im suprised they didnt blow out of bed.

onions, cabbage, grapes, anything that makes you windy really!!!
infacol does work in some babies, also phone your local surestart/childrens centre and ask if they run any baby massage courses, the first time we tried this on my daughter, she stopped crying instantly and went to sleep, after weeks and weeks of trying to get her down at 7pm after milk, then 2 hours of continuous screaming, baby massage really does work.
