View Full Version : How Anthropomorphic Are You?
Jabberwocky 03-11-2008, 11:34 Well????
TELL ME!!!
Do you treat your pet like a baby? Molly coddle and slobber over it and otherwise deny it its right to be an animal?
I do aparrantly. I was just told off by the Other Half because I called my cat a sweet little kitten even though he`s five years old, weighs about 17 stones and stinks like Satan.
My in laws are just as bad with their horrible little Yorkie, Buster, the damn thing hasnt walked for more than about 10 feet since he was a pup because hes almost constantly glued to the Mother in laws armpit.
So, my little chicky wiggles.... do you treat your pet like an animal or like a baby...?
Moonbird 03-11-2008, 11:46 I have been told that I baby my dogs, but to be honest although I talk silly to them and do enjoy cuddling up with them (aint that what pets are for?) I think that mainly I treat them as dogs, I would never carry a dog around regardless of breed...unless it really couldn't walk for some reason, then I think that I would be looking at quality of life.
I think that dogs or any pet should be allowed to lead as natural a life as possible, that means running about, playing and getting dirty, and shedding hair and muck all over my house...hmm
treat my pets like little people?
No chance! Hard to get sentimental about 8-legged critters! :hihi:

You ought to see my five year old with a house spider! She treats them like babies and cant understand why I run away gibbering and squeaking when she brings them over to me for a cuddle.
foxyflugel 03-11-2008, 11:57 I treat my pets better than a lot of the humans I meet (family and friends discounted) - cos they are nicer and more worthy!! lol :hihi:
puddinburner 03-11-2008, 13:35 Yes....hands up I do!! lol My horse's are my sole mates....tell em all my dutty lil secret's and my dog is parte' to my over zealous molly coddling. AND?????
As if I would pamper a pet!
Does this (http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u49/monkeyloon/016-1.jpg) look spoilt and coddled to you?

Not in the slightest.
Plain Talker 03-11-2008, 15:08 If destruct-o-pup wants to sit on my lap and have five minutes' love off me, then I'm happy to do so! :D
goldenbabe1966 03-11-2008, 18:47 I call him my little man cos thats what he is http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc72/GOLDENBABE1966/DSC00212.jpg a little human covered in fur
I have nursed him on my knee since we got at 5 weeks old(we didnt know he was that young at the time ) and still do it now even though he is 17 months :hihi: and will do forever .
Forgot to mention i also kiss the back of his ears cos they 're lovely an soft .
I used to call my cat my little baby, i'd stay up all night if he was ill, i'd let him take up all the room in bed, i would only let him out when i was in so that i knew what he was getting up to because he never ventured far and i would always make sure he was in before it went dark to get him all tucked up for bed.
It was the hardest decision i had to make when the vets told me he was seriously ill and the best thing was to put him to sleep (even writing this i'm crying thinking about him) but i knew that he had plenty of love and affection from me, more than a human would have got and that i knew i was doing the right thing by not letting him suffer.
Miss You Always Tiger
Jobi-Wan 03-11-2008, 19:38 I always wanted a dog.... perhaps that is why I taught the cat to sit and take the ponies out for walks round the village???
Seriously though, I don't have kids (yet) but my animals are the equivilant in responsibility terms, but no, I don't treat them as babies.
i agree with jobi wan, i dont have kids either and never really wanted them but having up to 8 hounds here at a time is my version of the same responsibility and caring as children, they are certainly spoilt and have all they need but not molly coddled, i adore them all but dont treat them like babies. annax

That's brilliant! :) I think it also applies to cats as well...... :hihi:
hodgepig66 03-11-2008, 21:11 defo love animals not so many people.Got 12 cats 6 (rescue) one is feral still trying to tame daisy(SHE DEVIL) very hard work i won't give up,2 dogs a hegehog, and a very understanding fella, not to mention loads of birds in my garden,do they count?
My pets are part of my family but they are not substitute children. I already have one of those.
Dogs are just that and deserved to be treated as dogs. I cringe when I hear people talk to there dogs like children. ie.
Shall we go for a ride in the papap?
Shall we go for ta ta's:loopy:

^^What she said (well, apart from the bit about already having children).
My animals are animals and although I love them to bits they are still animals and that means that humans outrank them and get first dibs at the seats, food and everything else.
My BF thinks that he's the tough one with the beasties, but he's actually the one who takes off his fleece so that Billy can have somewhere comfy and smelling of him to curl up for a sleep.
I believe animals deserve to be treated like animals and deserve to be respected as such.
However, I think I have a healthy balance in the way I treat them, they do get a bit spoilt and cuddled but never enough to affect their behaviour or the way I live my life. And it's amazing how even non-doggy people can come around to them when you have a do that gives lovely cuddles and kisses without licking!
Eddy gets called my 'Little Midget Man' but I don't see a problem with calling him a little man, he doesn't understand it - it's just affectionate and he doesn't hear it and think 'oh i'm a little person not a dog'.
So yes mine are a bit spoilt, but they're not substitute children - I never want to have children!!
hodgepig66 04-11-2008, 10:01 lotti i agree mine are not substitute kids either just don't want kids end of.However what does freak me out is people who do treat them as such, dressing them up,putting them into bags etc, talking to them in that baby talk yuk,let them be what they are cats and dogs.
*Peaches* 04-11-2008, 10:20 I treat my animals as animals, well I did til I brought home a little blind piggy, and not I sit talking to him for ages, and carrying him round with me so he doesn't feel scared

That is completely fantastic and exactly the same kind of argument had in my house!
Brilliant!
I treat mine like babies(especially the dog) she sleeps with me, oh goes mad cos I cuddle up with her, but she gets lonely on her bed(its cold down there) I`m also a bit stupid with the doggy talk" who`s mammy`s little babbby then?", "come on doobawooba!",and the best one "oooooooooo my little amberwamber, let me rub ya belly belly"????????????????:loopy:

To me that doesn't really matter, I talk to mine like that, but I don't consider them to be babies, it's just fun and funny, and having a sense of humour they like it too, plus they don't actually have a clue what crap you are talking anyway they just like your tone of voice.... they smile you smile, what's it matter I say! :hihi:
