I find it refreshing that our planning committees are now actively considering and in some cases agreeing to new highrise 'tower' developments.

Planning permission has already been granted for a number of 15 -20 storey developments.

BUt Manchester council have agreed to a 43-storey on Deansgate slap bang in the middle of their city centre.

Do we want one that big? Or even BiGgER?

If so where? consider the unique nature of Sheffield's topography.

Where best to site such a major landmark building?

How about around the University. It would be awesome to see tall buildings (over 20 storey's) clustered on the high ground.

Please tell me you don't mean Ruskin Park? We've put a lot of energy into getting funding to put in new play equipment and resurface the playing fields and now you want to put a skyscraper there. I could weep.

It's about time they Council did something about Ruskin park, and I don't mean build a skycraper on it.

Ruskin park is my local park too, and I'd dispair if they built any building on it, let alone a skycraper.

Mind you, have you seen what's happened to the bole-hills recreation ground. All that money spent on a wonderful children's playing area, with a fantastic view, and now it's vandalised.

It's not the council, it's The Friends of Ruskin Park and you can find our website here:

Friends of Ruskin Park (http://www.ruskinpark.org.uk/)

The reason it's not the council is because it doesn't belong to the council.

What's wrong with it anyway?

Hmmm.... I thought we already HAVE three perfectly good skyscrapers (a blue one, a green one and a yellow one) just above the railway station? These are excellent buildings in a spectacular setting. Take a walk up there in Autumn. It's beautiful.

But if you really do want to build a new one, I would suggest as big and bold as possible at the highest point you could find. Lets have a nice new landmark for Sheff like London's excellent 'Aubergene' building.

I love the park, I love the views down blake st and over hillsborough, thats why I though the views would be amazing if there were a skyscraper on this hill, I don't really want to get rid of the park though.
Are you part of the friends group then?

What?? Havent we learned the lessons from Park Hill, Hyde Park and the Kelvin etc?? Nobody spoke to each other, nobody knew who anybody was, the noise from surrounding flats was terrible, the communal areas stank of urine etc etc - I know, I lived there - what's so different about the new flats?

Shouldn't we be building communities instead of concrete crime waves?!
