View Full Version : Thoughts on buying family of rabbits
CAROLINERS 02-11-2008, 23:27 Hi just wanted anyones thoughts on this.
I might be being too suspicious and I know I can't completely hand pick who has my baby bunnies but I have a litter of four for sale and it's really important to me that they go to good homes.
I have been contacted (not via this website) by someone wanting all four. I explained that two have already gone and now they are not interested saying that they were after a family of four or five.
Do you think they were genuine or maybe buying in bulk for a pet shop or worse to feed another animal??
I think I am just glad they are not interested now and they maybe lovely people who want a lot of rabbits but can't help feeling worried.
What does anyone think?
I think you've done the right thing in letting this one pass by
if you could check their credentials as to whether they're experienced bunny owners who would know how to ensure they don't wind up with inbred offspring, then I'd say fairy snuff, (it wasn't Sooz was it? ;) ), but you've made the right decision here
Moonbird 03-11-2008, 00:28 I would be highly suspicious of anyone wanting more than one or maybe two without a very good reason...can't think of one off hand.
I think that your being responsible by not letting "just anyone" take the bunnies, after all you and your family have took good care to bring them up into happy healthy little things, it would be awful for that to change when someone else takes them on, you are all the protection that they have.
SpeedDemon 03-11-2008, 09:01 I'd be very suspicious also. When i was breeding, the only people who came to me wanting more than 2 bunnies were other breeders. We would then ensure that they got un-related bucks and does for them to breed with. Nobody who came for a pet wanted more than 1 or 2, and if they were wanting to breed, they shouldn't be taking litter mates anyway. They either want them for something wrong, or they don't care about inter-breeding between litter mates. Steer well clear! :)
CAROLINERS 03-11-2008, 09:36 Thanks a lot, I just got all worried and it sounds like I was probably right to.
I feel bad enough that our bunnies had these babies (we thought we had two does - even vets can make mistakes) and I feel really really responsible for them going to the right homes so I'd rather come across as too fussy than risk them ending up in the wrong hands.
Thanks for your help.
Caroline
foxyflugel 03-11-2008, 12:05 I would be exactly the same - no shame in that
That sounds funny to me , i would worry too so i think you did the right thing hun
holidayhutch 03-11-2008, 21:20 It definitely sounds suspicious, I think you definitely did the right thing.
cooljules 03-11-2008, 22:11 could be someone wanting them for snakes....its usually live mice/rats/gerbils or hamsters, but have known rabbits
CAROLINERS 03-11-2008, 22:14 Eeeewwww! Was hoping that sort of thing was just my imagination going wild!

reason i said it....i could be wrong (its been known!!) and they wanted lots of fluffy bunnies, but if you saw the price of frozen rabbits, you would be shocked! plus a lot of large snakes, will only take live food.

Those little bunnies are far too nice to be eaten by a snake
Thinking about it they would be a reasonable size for a snake too with being really small rabbits, thank God the OP said no!
CAROLINERS 03-11-2008, 23:39 Well those snakes are not getting my bunnies - not on my watch!!!

i dont know how much pet live rabbits cost etc. i know frozen ones can cost around 9quid each....
*Peaches* 04-11-2008, 09:27 I've had people ask for a family of piggies before, and I've known them take and neuter the father so they can all live together :)

Hmm got to be the exception rather than the rule though, unless I knew the people I would be very suspicious.
