So a weekly ticket (Sheffield) goes up by 50p, and a monthly one by £4!! are there 8 weeks in a month??
and this is encouraging the use of public transport is it?????

You can get a Sheffield Weekly travelmaster for £15 which is valid on all buses, trains and trams in sheffield. For £2.50 per week more this seems better value.

They appear to be trying to price even more people off the buses. I would much rather use public transport, but the way prices are increasing I am finding it more and more difficult to justify leaving the car at home and spending about 10 times more money by using buses. Even parking at Ponds Forge is now cheaper than getter the bus!

Thats because First Group rules South Yorkshire, and if they want to put up the fares again they will do.

They should lose their license to run buses in South Yorkshire. They are a total rip-off. They keep increasing the prices and decreasing the services. I thought the idea of deregulation was supposed to increase competition and choice? All it has done is increase the monopoly of one increasingly greedy company, and cause there to be more empty buses and more cars on the road as now running a car is cheaper than catching the bus if you have a family! Rant over lol!

I don't normally read the anti-bus threads now because they tend to be anti bus-driver rather than anti bus-company, and I think most bus drivers do a very good job in an increasingly difficult occupation. I will go and do a search lol.

Thank You! you comments are most kind.
I admit that bus drivers can be a pain in the a*se at times but when you are stuck in Woodseats most of the day it can be a test of the nerve!

What an absolute rip-off! Is it just me or do the prices seem to increase every other month or so... hmm?!
Oh well, doesn't bother me - if people keep paying it, the fares will just go up and up... and they're trying to get people on the bus lol what a joke!

I blame the yobs who smash windows on buses on a Nightly basis,at £500 plus it isnt cheap.

Also alot of drivers will be getting a big pay rise next april as long as they have worked for the company for more than two years. And its about time they were properly paid,So that will have to come out of the budget come next year
It not nice that the passenger has to pick up the bill but thats economics for you.

Speak to your MP if you want a Bus service that isnt run for profit as they are the only ones who can change the current system.

[EDITED]

Please note that you can save £2 when you buy your FirstMonth tickets online. It's been 2 months since the last increase in prices, so as Andy who must have the First Mainline price update texted to his mobile or something...
Here is the same list translated:

Sheffield Day-Saver: 2£50 OFF PEAK
Sheffield & South Yorkshire Day-Saver: 3£

Sheffield 7-Day Saver: 12£50
Rotherham 7-Day Saver: 12£
Doncaster 7-Day Saver: 12£
South Yorkshire 7-Day Saver: 15 £
Sheffield Student 7-Day Saver: 8£

Sheffield Month-Saver: 43£
Rotherham Month-Saver: 41£
Doncaster Month-Saver: 41£
South Yorkshire Month-Saver: 49£

Bit of a rip off really... I still have an old 7-Day Saver that cost me 5 pounds back in 2000, that's not so long ago...
Thank You! you comments are most kind.
I admit that bus drivers can be a pain in the a*se at times but when you are stuck in Woodseats most of the day it can be a test of the nerve! It's not really Woodseats the problem, it's the new lights they've installed either side of the now narrowed road that cause the problem... How many 53s do you see standing in the middle of Scarsdale ?
And yeah, I reported 61168 & 60019 on the 20 service to the First Big Brother offices and got my lame letter reply.
These new lights are also a plague for pedestrians who are made to wait for 3 minutes (I've timed it) to get accross due to Intel tum tum tutum Processor powered traffic lights

I'm not that sad!

Simply a cut and paste job off First's website!

On the subject of the prices going up all the time, each fare is increased twice a year maximum. However where First are their own worst enemy is that not all the tickets go up at the same time - they put up singles up on week, then a few weeks later day tickets go up, then a few weeks after that weekly and monthlys go up, so it does seem like fares are going up ever few weeks!

I never thought this would happen but it is genuinely cheaper to go to town by car if there is at least two of you in it. I've more or less stopped catching the bus, me & my girlfriend just now share petrol money. Its cheaper:loopy:

so they have gone up and now for the bad news it looks like in the next 2-3 months the bus fares are going up as well. how do I know well I have been talking to a bus driver I know and he fills me in on the details when they come out of the office so it could be that the child fare of what it is now 40p will may be go up to 50p they will have to put up the fares now that the passes have gone up. still the bus fares in south yorkshire are still the cheapest you want to have a look at the prices down in birmingham they are not cheap also it is expensive out in york. the trouble is there is that many bus operators in south yorkshire you dont know where you stand, thats the biggest problem when they did deregulation on the buses they should have left it as just one company we never had this problem when it was the sheffield omnibus company or even the sheffield corperation buses but now to many bus operators in sheffield.

I've had an idea...
How about if they trialled a 50p ride for a week or so? The idea is that you get on the bus, pay the set fare (lets say 50p) and that 50p can take you from one stop to the next, or even right through to the terminus. It's a low price that will encourage people who are on the borderline of being able to run a car to get on the bus as well as making travel cheaper for people who can't afford it (which is why they're on the bus in the first place)... This price would be the same for everyone, regardless of age etc, so there can be no dispute/bickering over "passes", aswell as making the drivers job easier by not arguing with passengers for 10 mins over a 3-4 stop journey.

Ofcourse I'm living in cloud cuckoo land as I know that First (the main culprits) wouldn't ever make public transport cheaper and as a result, the price (and the many other downsides) of using public transport will always put me and others off.

Even if a new company came in and did this, I bet you'd catch the 50p bus to your terminus, rather than paying the ususal £1.40 plus that you pay with first. I would if I were car-less. Perhaps the Megabus could be the ones to revolutionise public transport. They already offer dead cheap travel to London, why not replicate a cheap city wide service that is bound to result in the money grabbing companies such as first being forced to reduce their prices in order to keep some custom.
Opinions? I know theres flaws, but its an idea!

Yeh but if someone intends on travelling on several buses to go to where they're going, they'll end up paying 50p several times, and actually pay more than what they're paying for now !

But yeh, it's high time there was a flat rate for everyone, dissabled, students, youngens and oldies... We're supposed to be living in an equal society and at the first chance they get a category of people are better off !

(mmmmh 8 quid student bus passes, you gotta love 'em)

The prices rise but the frequency and service levels fall. People are paying more and getting less.
