A friend of mine's car would not start recently. They belong to one of these national breakdown insurance schemes, I wont mention which one. It is one that subcontracts out to local garages to get you started should you need it.

They rang the nominated number and a breakdown wagon arrived.

My friend lives in the country about 10 miles from Sheffield. The repairer got the car started then requested £80 for doing so as my friend lived outside the geographical area that they covered. My friend refused to pay and rang the breakdown service national number. They stated that the organisation was nation wide and the visit was free.

My friend sent the subcontractor away with a flea in his ear.

So I post this to warn people if they have a similar experience, DONT PAY.

If I were him I would raise an official complaint. This guy may have been pocketing such fees

Strix, I am sure an official complaint has been lodged, and yes I would imagine that the guy was pocketing such fees.

It was more of a warning to others.

As the originator, it is written in River Lea Bow/Stratford E15 'Stendereese. Hope that has helped.

I had a similar experience a couple of years back. I stupidly drove into a ditch and needed towing out of it. A very grumpy man came from a local firm to 'rescue' me and told me I would have to pay £70 + VAT as he had to use 'specialised equipment'. Fortunately I didn't have the money on me or I would have paid it, but when I rang the breakdown service to query it they said it had already been invoiced to them.

I then received an invoice through the post but ignored it. They didn't exactly pursue me for payment and I had no communication from the breakdown service to say it wasn't covered. Reading this I now wonder if I had almost been taken for a mug.

Is this a common scam?

I think anything to do with cars, on the QT, is a scam.

No Names, no packdrill, as they said in the national service.....but........

I do know of somebody that cruises the motorway during summer towing people off. He is a private individual that stops and says words to the effect that if you stay there and want towing off it'll cost you a fortune, I'll do you a favour and tow you to nearest slip road for, they agree an amount.

It is against the law of cos so delete the above, but look out for him in north London if you break down.

Del Boy is alive and well.........

Sorry if I have offended anyone but when I first looked at this post the words had so many letters in them that I now see should not have been there that whole thing looked like foriegn language.
Maybe I had a screen problem
