View Full Version : The Shortest road in Sheffield

I walked to work today. I walked along a road called Albion Street that links Addy Street and Oxford Street in the Netherthorpe area.

Is this the shortest road in Sheffield? If not, it must be the shortest road with no domestic addresses.

Where is the shortest road in the sense that it carries two way traffic?

Before I was exiled from Sheffield, the shortest street I can remember - and this must have been a contender for shortest named street in the WORLD, let alone Sheff - was Holme Way.

It linked Holme Lane and Loxley Road in a triangle as part of the Malin Bridge one way system. It had no buildings on it and must have been about 10 -15 metres long - so why they even gave it a name I don't know!

Anyway it got built over as part of the road realignment to accommodate the Malin Bridge supertram terminus.

What about Norfolk Lane in town, it used to be longer til they built the eggbox.
And it even has a pub on it, the Yorkshire Grey.
Sandrigham Road in Wincobank was that short it never used to have a road sign

There's a road by the entrance to Meersbrook park off Cliffefield Road called Cliffe view Road. It seems a pointless road as it has about 3 houses on it and looks like part of Cliffefield Road. I did a search on streetmap and it exists but isn't even drawn on the map. It must be less than 10m long.

Cliffe view road (http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=435032&y=384117&z=1&sv=cliffe+view+road&st=6&tl=Cliffe+View+Road,+Sheffield,+S_8&searchp=newsearch.srf&mapp=newmap.srf)

A contender for the shortest road in Sheffield maybe?

Sorry Foxxx, do you have the correct length. 10 metres and 3 houses, please explain......

Don't know about Sheffield, but it's an interesting fact that in York, the shortest street is Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate.

You think I'm kidding? Well, I ain't. And it must be about ten yards long.

whip -ma-whop-ma-gate : at school we were always told that it was the shortest street with the longest name. I think we were also told where the name came from but I can't remember now.

Albion Street actually crosses Oxford Street and joins what remains of Martin Street at the other side of the tower block down the slope according to my map.

The shortest I can think of in this area, Harcourt Crescent between Crookesmoor Road & Harcourt Road.

Agree that nationally Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma Gate takes some beating (have also come across it in quite a few pub quizzes).

The shortest road in sheffield is well known to be market place. It consists of one building and It overlooks where the hole in the road used to be. It's length is probably about 25 or 30 feet, and it has only one side.
To the left of it is High street and to the right is Angel street, and the single building is now the Pub which was/is the Banker's Draft.

Very close to you Muddy, there's a road called Crosby Road; it runs between Holmhirst Road and Fraser Road, and has only two houses on it.

Yes Kris I know it very well, It also has 3 garages, but is is at least 3/4 times the length of Market Place

As in running directly in front of the Bankers Draft then Muddy? Or am I not with? Again! ;)

Well it basically is the bankers draft now. I believe it was originally the address of the market which used to stand on the site of the hole in the road 150+ years ago. And the name is all that is left.

er..no!! I'd have to go with a tape measure to find that out! Maybe I will one evening out of interest, although determining exactly where it starts and stops could be difficult. The 3 houses and less than 10 metres is only a guess. It is a tiny road that is an off shot from Cliffefield Road. I'll have to look at the house numbering to work out which houses are actually on that road.

It seems there are a few short roads - but I always wondered what Forge Hill in Oughtibridge was for. It's basically a fork in the road, and even has a road name sign. Not even enough room to build a postbox on it...

Really?? does it carry on somewhere? as you drive towards it, it says Forge Hill, and about 4 feet to the left it says Langestt Road South, and about the same distance to the right it is Low Road. Always thought it was too small a road to be just that little bit between the two flows of one-way traffic..

Jew Lane, of Fitzalan Square. Not only is it very short, but its also very thin.

You can find it next to the betting shop (or is it the bingo(?) shop), it goes down around the back of the bread shop and pops out next to the former barclays bank.

You can find it on a huge PDF here:

muddy;

the office and commercial buildings on the opposite side of market place from The Bankers Draft", still exist....

the Bridal shop, the Ibiza Cafe, age concern, et al...

and they are still called Market place, IIRC

Her's was one of the old terraced houses that are below road level on the left hand side, but I think the new stone houses just before her's are also addressed as Forge Hill.

Coo Hill in Woodhouse is extremely short, about twelve feet long.

Jew Lane is a strange place. Today it's more like a path than a Lane. I did some research and found it used to be called "Jehu Lane". I'm not sure if that is correct as I've found out before that research on the net is not always accurate.
