View Full Version : Getting beat up by random strangers - Does it still happen?

Does this still happen as often as it used to?
I can remember barely being able to walk from the leadmill to the bus station without some knobheads stopping me. Have they cracked down on that crap yet?

Never really experienced that sort of thing here in Sheffield in the 20 years I've been living here, though have had fun and games in Leeds and London.

The least comfortable I've felt in Sheffield recently is probably odd occasions around the Exchange Street / Sheaf Maket area of the town centre.

Sorry Strix. I've gotten used to all darn free speech.:)

Actually, you may have a job finding your way from the leadmill to the bus station now :D

Sheaf Square camera (http://sccplugins.sheffield.gov.uk/utc/cam01.htm) but it looks better in daylight

I thought if I used the little smiley face you would figure I was being sacrastic. I'm sorry. I don't actually think that I have anymore free speech over here than over there. And I also don't care about having my posts edited.
I didn't realize when I started posting that there were rules on offensive language and I promise I shall be more careful in future posts.

My bad.:(

Once again a reasonable question on this board is answered with "watch your language" and begins to disintigrate into a discussion about rules and protocols.

Nothing wrong with rules and protocols, like when somebody is typing in caps (which by the way should be pointed out to them politely because they might not know any better - ref a previous thread) or typing in txt msg speak or using bad language etc etc - but it seems to me there was nothing wrong with this guys question or the way it was asked - IMHO.

So, moving on, the answer to the actual question, is "Yes - it does happen".

My brother-in-law's mate stopped for petrol at the garage at the bottom of Netherthorpe road on his way back from London, it was 1.40am, got out of the car and was seriously attacked by 3 hooded persons. He woke up hours later in hospital. The car hadn't been stolen, nor was anything in the car taken. Unprovoked and pointless. The forecourt CCTV was useless for identification purposes and nothing ever came of it. I don't know the guy who was attacked... it was a mate of my in-laws, but he's now got steel in his head holding stuff together and he's a completely different person.

As a victim of an unprovoked attack myself, in a so-called "posh" area of Sheffield (and I'm happy to report that the Police had to go to the Northern General to interview 2 of the idiots who attacked us, including the youth who stabbed my mate), I can testify to the fact that unprovoked attacks do happen, and I'm sure they're as common between the Leadmill and the bus station as they are in any other part of Sheffield.

A mate of mine was the victim of an unprovoked attack just outside the Leadmill last year. Apparantly that is one area of Sheffield not monitored by CCTV?

Soon after the attack a camera crew following the police that night came down and filmed him and his gf. Now they are on 'steetcrime uk' every now and again when they show all the repeats!

Got to say though, these sort of events are not comonplace.

I've been down town lots of times without any incedent.

The flush toilet as we know it was invented by an Englishman called Crapper: ergo it's contents were hereafter known as crap in the case of number 2. However the term crap is also used in the US for a gambling game called craps using dice, and featuring the numbers 7 and 11. I am sure our friend was quoting this context and not lavatory humour.

I'm sure it does happen, but I live near the Leadmill and have for about 5 years and frequently wander around the area / city center on my own in the wee small hours and have never had a problem with being attacked or even feeling scared of being attacked...

BoppinBruce

initially, buck, the word crap is an anglo saxon word in common usage long before Mr Crapper's flush loo.

A friend of mine was beaten up by two hefty young men walking along Crookes not so long ago. He was also robbed. They approached him from behind and brought him down. It was 23.00 hrs.

The most worrying thing about the attack was that people were driving by in cars and walking on the other side of the road and nobody came to his aid.

We had just been 'talking' on a previous thread prior to this post ;) My post was an explanation as to why the thread title was full of asterisks **** :( Joe fixed them

Arguably, this is why it is such a common crime. If we all responded to these situations by pitching in, they wouldn't stand much chance

OK, so, very politely, from Sheffield Forum Rules

What does any of that have to do with illegitimate children?
I already said I was sorry. No reason to post the rules AGAIN. But thanks anyway. I know people on here love to read them daily.

Oh wait......................:)

PS: This was actually written to let RockDrummer know that there was a rule about swearing on the forum, your post was included to point out that you had already apologised for it in the first place, but thanks for replying anyway.

You've forgotten how you phrased your question before Joe fixed it for you........... Or I mis-read the row of asterisks that the software substituted instead of your swearing ;)

In a similar vein - My brother in law was attacked when he and one of his neighbours went to complain about the noise from a party in an adjoining property, he had already been round once. The party was a wedding celebration and my b-i-l was attacked by 6 of the guests leaving him with a brain injury, fractured skull, ligament damage to his leg and arm and his neighbour (who already had a pot on his leg and his are strapped following a m.bike smash) received injuries to his face and other leg.

Bearing in mind that the Police know the address, the wedding couple presumably know their guests, there was a video of the wedding which presumably would have had the faces of the guests on? No-one has been charged as the Police have been told the person they want has left the country and they have been unable to seize the video for identification purposes.

My b-i-l has been unable to work since the attack which took place almost two years ago as he is an engineer operating heavy machinery, he sometimes loses his balance, his memory is no longer good, his sense of smell and taste have been affected, his mobility is still a problem as his brain is only now starting to register the fact that his ligaments have been damaged and his muscle tone has gone down one side. DWP are now accusing him of being a malingerer and the hospital are trying to find someone else to blame for the fact that he is not getting any better.

Sorry for the length of this posting but it really frustrates me that everyone is claiming that they are powerless to act.

Crikey everyone. Can we just answer the question rather than laying in to those forum posters who don't get quite so hung up on all the pedantic pieces of punctuation in a post?
Trying to read the car parking thread elsewhere on this site is like reading 'Eats, Shoots and Leaves' by Lynne Truss.
I'm beginning to feel that many of you sit in wait to ambush an unwary poster who forgets an apostrophe, or who fails to enclose a quote within those vital quotation marks.
I'm sure, reading your corrections, that you are quite intelligent people who can easily make sense of those posts which miss out punctuation, or fail to get 100% on your spelling test.
Just give them a break, and those of us who don't mind so much won't have to put up with the tedium of scrolling past your endless discussions on the English language.

Totally off topic but... that word was my contribution to the "least favourite word" thread here.... http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27592

I'm glad somebody else finds it as repulsive as I do :)

Well said CMaloney

Who cares how anything is spelt as long as it gets the point across.

I’m sorry but I generally don’t have enough time to read each posting, check it for spelling and punctuation and then spend five minutes correcting it.

Does it make you feel like you are more intelligent? are you guys frustrated teachers. Instead of worrying about pointless corrections why don’t you just add a useful post and then worry about the amount of free time you have on your hands.

Mod. Note

Actually, t'wasn't me that took the asterisks out. Would have been one of the other Mods.

However, please stick to the subject in hand. If you want to run a corrective English group then set up a thread for it. :)
