Every damn year, PCS always naff things up in the end and by the time the salaries change we're due another one so why does the PCS even bother!

Yep, had all those so got on the internet and bought The Star and Yorkshire Post on Thursdays and after a couple of months got one of two jobs I applied for. £5k pay rise and three hours per week less to work. However I will travel 90 miles per week more. So an extra 2 gallons of diesel for those benefits. I must stress that I was in the right place at the right time for this job. My boss was gobsmacked when I gave him the resignation letter and yes they did offer to review my salary. This I refused, but thanked them for their offer.

All companies do this. They preach continually about how important tenured staff are, and then they hire newbies for more money than you, because they can't get anyone worth a hill of beans to work for the money you were hired on all those years ago, when you were inexperienced and the economy was weaker.

I'm afraid the only way to get a payrise worth more than inflation is to find a new job.

My employer works on merit pay but for the last 2 years through no fault of my own my pay reviews have been deferred 1st time due to maternity leave and 2nd time due to sickness (slipped disc resulted in a 4 month absence!)

I enjoy my work and don't wish to look elsewhere as I have little flexibility being a Mum of three...I feel though part time Mums are often classed as second rate employees because they have the added distraction of commitments at home !

I don't think you can really class maternity leave as no fault of your own, Shiesh.

Yup. Started off lower than promised (v. p****d off) then proceeded to not get a raise for 2 years. Got 2 raises in 6 months when they discovered that I was, in fact, holding most of the knowledge of the business platform in my head (at least, certain important parts of it), and that I was planning to scarper.

Left shortly after, happy now :)

My 1st ever job said if I worked really well over Xmas, I would become assistant manager. I worked really hard, turned up every day, despite being unwell. I even earnt more than my manager over the Xmas period. Then one day a letter arrived at work stating no assistant manager position at our branch. I was gutted. I had to carry on working pt as a sales assistant. Then again the company closed down a few years. I am now in a job that I love, in which I gained a promotion.
