Shiesh 22-05-2005, 14:22 because 187 members are online but only 60 are actually looking at the Sheffield Forum pages....the others are online but could be on Ebay, etc etc :) poppins 22-05-2005, 14:27 Originally posted by Shiesh because 187 members are online but only 60 are actually looking at the Sheffield Forum pages....the others are online but could be on Ebay, etc etc :) Don't quite get that Shiesh, you mean if someones on ebay and there a forum member it shown up on the forum ? At first i thought it ment like 189 members on the forum, oh! forget it, forgot how i was going to explain what i thought ! must be wrong anyhow > Thanks melthebell 22-05-2005, 14:32 it means ON THIS FORUM, it doesnt track people across the net lol Shiesh 22-05-2005, 14:34 it's ok Poppins I know what you mean... think of it another way... 187 people who are registered Sheffield Forum users are currently on the internet at the moment and of those 60 are actually on the Sheffield Forum web address looking at the threads etc ;) the others are looking on other web pages/addresses but the tracking cookies lets Geoff know they are logged onto the internet... D2J 22-05-2005, 14:40 I think it may mean there are 187 people viewing the site. You can choose whether or not you wish to been seen online in your settings. I think those 187 may include registered users logged in whether visible or not and guests just viewing the site. Like me, Im logged in but Im not shown as online :) Don't want people knowing I'm lurking in the background :suspect: poppins 22-05-2005, 14:47 Originally posted by Deejay I think it may mean there are 187 people viewing the site. D2J 22-05-2005, 14:50 Well thats all sorted then  melthebell 22-05-2005, 15:50 now get back to lurking you dirty lowdown good for nothing lurkers :P t020 22-05-2005, 15:59 Originally posted by Shiesh it's ok Poppins I know what you mean... think of it another way... 187 people who are registered Sheffield Forum users are currently on the internet at the moment and of those 60 are actually on the Sheffield Forum web address looking at the threads etc ;) the others are looking on other web pages/addresses but the tracking cookies lets Geoff know they are logged onto the internet... Not quite. The main reason is a lot of people (including me) opt out of being visible on the "Who's Online" list, so 187 people may be on the forum but that could include guests (who aren't listed in Who's Online) and people who have opted out of appearing on the list such as me, so only 60 may be listed of the 187. There also seems to be a slight time delay in logging off or going to another site so it's often not up to date. Edit: Didn't see Deejay's post when I made this, not trying to steal your post Deejay! No worries mate, you do often have to repeat things around here so they sink in ;) Shiesh 22-05-2005, 16:19 Well can someone explain this.....I look on the SForum for 10 mins when I first switch on computer etc ....then close the window and go into my ebay account for 3 hours etc Next day at work mate says PM'd me as I was online all last night and why hadn't I replied....??? well in my eyes I wasn't there all night and therefore didn't get PM!! Also, on WindowsXP if my hubby been on forum under his ID etc then closes all windows and logs off but leaves internet connection running as I wanna go on when I come to log onto SForum it still shows him as being online all night too...obviously as initial internet connection still running.... t020 22-05-2005, 16:22 Originally posted by Shiesh Well can someone explain this.....I look on the SForum for 10 mins when I first switch on computer etc ....then close the window and go into my ebay account for 3 hours etc Next day at work mate says PM'd me as I was online all last night and why hadn't I replied....??? well in my eyes I wasn't there all night and therefore didn't get PM!! I think this is the case unless you explicity logoff rather than just closing the window or going to a new site. D2J 22-05-2005, 16:25 I think I have read a post somewhere that says the 'users online' refreshes every 5 minutes or so.. could be the reason.. poppins 22-05-2005, 17:03 Originally posted by Deejay No worries mate, you do often have to repeat things around here so they sink in ;) Often have to repeat things ??? are you reffering to me DJ ? you sound like my husband, he's always telling me that too ! I login using 2 different computers. I'm logged out. I login on the laptop. The battery dies/phone rings & laptop sleeps. I login on the PC. I logout on the PC. Next time I visit on the laptop, I'm still there. I think that's how it works anyway  could be wrong :suspect: t020 22-05-2005, 20:09 Are you sure it's not showing you the cached version when you do that? Maybe press refresh and see if you're still on it. Strix 22-05-2005, 20:14 Originally posted by t020 Are you sure it's not showing you the cached version when you do that? You don't need to waste time pressing 'refresh', post reply' will tell you if you're logged in or not  t020 22-05-2005, 20:49 Originally posted by Strix You don't need to waste time pressing 'refresh', post reply' will tell you if you're logged in or not  No, you misunderstand me, or I misunderstand what you meant to begin with. What I mean is if you go to SF on a PC where you've not been on it for a few hours and you logged out, but the homepage shows you on the Who's Online list, it could be because the browser is showing a cached version of the page so pressing refresh would update it and should remove you from the list and show that you're actually logged out. Strix 22-05-2005, 21:04 No idea t020. I usually just prod 'view new posts', or if it's not there, login  It shows up as 'today's topics' if you're not logged in.
