View Full Version : World Vegan Day 08
LexRigby 30-10-2008, 14:27 It's that time of year again... WORLD VEGAN DAY (http://www.worldveganday.org/). On the 1st of November vegans are celebrating and this year there is a theme - 'improving the quality and availability of vegan food'.
For some great ideas you can download the Vegan Catering for All pdf here (http://www.vegansociety.com/images/VeganCateringForAll.pdf) or visit the Sheffield Animal Friends on Fargate between 11 and 3 who'll be dishing out cake!

PuressenceUK 30-10-2008, 15:34 Or alternatively you can totally ignore it and have a nice big fat juicy steak instead.
However as a suggestion for your theme, which you state to be 'improving the quality of vegan food' - why not try adding some meat and cheese?

Brilliant! Roll on the token moron... Who's next?
myriadmike 31-10-2008, 08:05 What is the vegan obsession with cake? Seems a common theme.
LexRigby 31-10-2008, 08:11 There is no 'vegan obsession'. I just happen to like cake so what! Doesn't anyone have anything more constructive to say?

No problem - you're just firming up my believe that Tofu munchers have no sense of humour.

It just seems every gig I go to or event where vegans are doing stuff, there are cakes present, thats all.
People tend to be more open to trying new sweet things, as opposed to savoury, so cakes and buns are a good way to tempt people who might not ordinarily go for vegan or veggie stuff.
It's a shame that the vegan "cheese" substitutes are universally rubbish though, I don't think there's one which isn't like tasteless gloopy pap. :(
BrianMaiden 31-10-2008, 10:39 I heard Sheffield Vegans were going to have a pro-vegan march, but their diets are so bad none of them had the energy so instead they're just going to sit in a vegan cafe looking pale and ill.

Not fair - I don't think I've ever been to a gig where cake was available, vegan or otherwise :(

They won't be very nice cakes without milk, butter or eggs.

I wouldn't be so sure about that actually. The vegan banana cake that is done at the Baker's shop in Walkley is fab.

Why don't you say something funny? Then we'll find out if he had got a sense of humour.

Holds up a handbag and makes an 'Ooooooooooh' noise.

To any vegans or people with egg or dairy allergies, I'd guess they would be preferable to "normal" cakes.
For me, it's cake. ALL cake is good, even cakes covered in marzipan!
So, do you prefer meat or cheese in your cake?

I prefer cheesecake
EdnaKrabappe 31-10-2008, 12:14 I don't understand why people say their food can't be nice without meat in it. There are some wonderful Vegan and Vegetarian foods!
I'm a long term veggie - 24 years now - but I've never tried to take that final step. When i became veggie, it wasn't as easy as it is now, I bought a lot from Holland and Barratt and i thanked god for Marks and Spencer who were quite innovative with the V sign early on.
Now everythng more or less has the V sign on. I know what i can and can't eat and rarely get caught out (I'm not saying i'm a saint!)
It would be nice to be given that choice to become vegan a little easier as I've always perceived it as that step too difficult to take. If I come into town, I'll pop along :)

It's true, there's always loads of cake at crusty gigs.

you have to have some fun in your life.
Thanks for the heads up Lex, it's good to celebrate the positive and compassionate in the world. Good luck!
CharleyF 31-10-2008, 21:01 Maybe I have a cake obsession... I'm making cakes to take to work for my colleagues tomorrow. Vegan cake is fun because no-one ever suspects it's possible to make really nice cake without milk or eggs, particularly not cheesecake or light and fluffy chocolate cake. My colleagues are so funny, when I brought cake for my birthday they ate it all, said how good it was, then realised it was mine and then got really confused as to how I'd managed to make sponge cake with no eggs and cheesecake with no dairy products :D. And after work I'm playing and sound engineering at a festival, fortunately I'm not too weak and pale to lug PA systems around every weekend!:P
myriadmike 01-11-2008, 11:08 Perhaps the best chocolate cake I've ever eaten was vegan, the less said about the vegan whipped cream served with it though the better. :gag:

I hate people who generalise...they're all idiots :hihi:

Thanks Norbert. I celebrated in style with plenty of CAKE. It was amazing. I also got a vegan creme egg and that was amazing too.

I bet the people around you had to be treated for 3rd degree compassion burns.
