So what's the story supposed to be? "If you don't like the company arrangements, pay for your own transport" doesn't sound like much of a story to me, just perfectly normal business practice in every business I've ever heard of.

I think its more to do with the fact Wednesday refused to pay for the players to get the train down as the coach is cheaper and professional footballers of a Championship team had to fork out their own money to make up the difference to get the train down.

Surely if the club wanted to treat the players right they'd be happy to pay for them to travel down to Crystal Palace on the train (which is a pain to get to, even on the train).

With 9 players and a manager out of contract in the summer its going to be difficult to renew contracts with nothing in the bank.

I heard a rumour Beevers was on his way to the Blades and a fee has been agreed to ease the cash shortage at Wednesday.

£30 each ???
They will be lucky, uinless they booked very early, like about six to eight weeks ago.

It's the Stagecoach Highwaymen and National Express running things now.

Maybe they are just paying for a first class upgrade themselves?

Mind, it wouldn't have happened in Sgt Wilko's day.
They would have been running 13 miles of it!

I'd expect the £30 is the difference they are paying whatever goes over the travel budget they have set.

Travelling down to Palace on the train on the day of the match is asking for trouble.

No wonder Wednesdays away form is so shocking.

Fully agree with you there.

Let's hope it's not a replacement bus from Leicester to Kettering , or whatever then, this week, and the Thameslink or whatever it's called now is running.

Should be fun for them on the supporters' special, and then walking up the hill from South Norwood station with the Palace fans.

And even more fun on the way back.

This whole "Wednesday can't afford the travel" thing is a non-story, the club would be paying for a coach as usual. However, the players have expressed a preference for the train and as a goodwill gesture have paid the extra cost themselves. For a squad of at least 20, including the coaching staff, this saves the club £600 at £30 extra each.

However, it's not as simple as that really. The coach would take the players directly to the ground. Have the players considered how they're going to get from the station to the ground and from the ground to the station afterwards? Selhurst Park is a nightmare to get to, it's not as if they can just jump on the tube.

There's no mention of which day they're actually travelling. It does seem rather odd to be going down to London on the day for a 3pm kickoff. Going to Reading on the day for a night game was understandable, even though it backfired, but surely they should be going the night before for the Palace game? Then it doesn't really matter about the long coach journey as they can sleep it off.

If they went standard class then they could probably get it cheaper, and even have enough left over for a coffee and a walnut whip each.

maybe for the lower leagues but for a supposed 'big club' in the 2nd tier of the english league it smacks of penny pinching by swfc- which leads onto the question- if they need to save £600- just how close to the edge are they??

Sheffield Wednesday stars must pay own train fare to Crystal Palace

By Football Spy 30/10/2008

Sheffield Wednesday's players have been told they must fork out £30 each if they want to take the train to Saturday's game at Crystal Palace.

The Owls' cash-strapped moneymen were planning to send the squad down to London on a coach.

But the players were not keen on the idea of a long motorway journey and asked if they could go by train. They were given the go-ahead only on the proviso they pay towards their own fares.

Wednesday are desperate to find new cash to boost their empty coffers, although they revealed to Stock Exchange yesterday that a proposed takeover by sportswear tycoon Geoff Sheard has stalled until JULY 1ST :hihi::hihi:

The odd thing with this story (or non-story if you prefer :)) is why it's surfaced in the press... it could come from the club, who spin it so that it looks like the players are so supportive of the club in these difficult financial times, that they're prepared to make a gesture like this to save the club money but also be better prepared... or it could be a blade (or someone else looking to embarrass swfc) trying to expose just how close to the edge the finances are down there... or even the players/manager trying to embarrass the moneymen into giving the team a fighting chance while they're still in touch with the playoffs?

After the Reading fiasco, you'd have thought £600 would've been chickenfeed, especially as Wednesday have a good chance of beating Palace (if Forest can beat them, after all!). The 3 points could be those that get swfc into the playoffs, or avoid relegation, come the end of the season!

On the other hand, if the hardcore loyal support is now stuck around 16k, maybe they've realised they've no other options - if the stayaway fans aren't going to come out and support the team on the back of a great start, then they'll have to cut their cloth accordingly. No wonder Laws was upset with the sending off appeal, and £750 costs.

It's not that long ago United were in a similar position really, but they need to keep hold of Laws, or the whole lot could fall down very quickly.

Quite frankly, no.

We got into this mess by spending money unecessarily.

So this week Wednesday have complained about paying a £750 fine to the FA and now can't afford the additional £800 which would allow the squad to travel down to London in more comfort than a coach journey on a Friday afternoon.

The majority of the squad voted to travel down by train so i'm presuming that'll be 16 players pretty cheesed off at the lack of respect for them.

With 9 players and a manager out of contract in the summer hard(er) times seem just around the corner without the takeover.

They're aware of the situation at the club. And they've offered to pay their train fare.

We provide transport. If they don't want to use it, then it's their problem and they can use their own money to pay for alternative transport. We pay them enough!

I thought Owls had already removed all the high/decent earners off the wage bill after the league 1 seasons? If so, the players must be aware how tight the cash is there, if they're prepared to do this... it's not like they're on a stupid amount anymore (like Beattie's reputed £39k!).

From all accounts, if there's one ground where it's particularly a pain to get to, it's Selhurst - and while Palace are really struggling, it just would've been a good opportunity to break the recent poor away form... and worth the extra grand it'd have cost the club for a better chance of 3 points?

Only ever been one club with any respect in this city, and that's Wednesday.

Now I know you are seriously deluded, better close the curtains and hide because the men in the white coats are going to be round in a bit looking for you.
Your club is no longer respected but looked upon as a joke and with everything they keep doing they just keep shooting themselves in the foot.

If owls are a Joke club - why did blades have B robson a joke manager most blades fans stated !!!

In fact Why does this joke owls team Win 1-0 against the Mighty blades:hihi:

Owls fans know things are not right behind the seens now perhaps this is because owls spent big in the past - Cup win, Cup finals, more than ONE SEASON in the prem - These Things blades fans will only dream about :P

robson- simple mistake by the board im afraid, we put it right, unlike you lot who had 10 managers in how many seasons? that was a joke my friend.

as i said before- one game doesn't make a season and i think we were referring to you as a joke CLUB, not a joke team- you deserved to win the derby- no arguments there.

one season in the prem- i think you should check your facts.

living in the past gets you nothing- ask newcastle or liverpool fans, its whats happening now that makes the differeance and the fact is that for the past 10 years wednesday have done nothing- zip- nada while united have had a whale of a time on cup runs, promotion campaigns and a premiership season that you lot would have given your right arms to have had.

Err but isn't that living in the past still :loopy:. What's happening now is that we're in the same division and only four points above us!

Making players pay for the train .....

Sorry to spoil your fun CB; but however the press have reported it, the truth appears to be the players have chosen to go that way, than experience the joke the M1 and M25 is on a Friday, and who can blame them

The coach is going empty (and won't be returning either , if they haven't got enough and can't get any more diesel, due to shortages because of withdrawn sales because of contamination in the south).

If the players do the business on the pitch, any bonus should more than adequately cover their rail tickets.

Add Fleetwood Mac's "You can go your own way", to your hit parade.

Have a good weekend.

Yep, I've checked the facts, and in the last decade you only had one season in the Prem. Would we really have given our right arms to have had that one glorious relegation season? Well, having seen my club play in the top flight for a total of fifteen seasons including finishing in the top eight several times I wouldn't exactly count your relegation as something to be jealous about.

As for your "whale of a time" on cup runs (a total of one semi-final of a major competition more than us, isn't it?), promotion campaigns (campaigns plural? There was one, same as Wednesday), at the end of the day your "glorious decade" hasn't actually got you very far in front of Wednesday as far as league status is concerned, has it?

They do say it's better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all.

But United's season in the Prem. (with more to come very soon) saw us:

Get a most respectable 38 points which any team now would give their right arm for.

It was enough - we were cheated, the Arbitration have ruled in our favour and we will shortly get many millions - thus ensuring we stay above Wendy for the forseeable future.

We weren't thrashed by any team that season, home or away. Unlike Wendy's last ever foray in the PL. 8-1 at Newcastle, wasn't it?

Oh, and Wendy hold the record for the worst start in PL history.

Never mind. Cheer yourselves up with this (http://kineticnorth.com/BBCNews/?NewsGUID=e0eca1ad-08dd-4fcb-b2a0-0e147c2d40c3).

In the 70's united players took the train to Arsenal for a match.
What they did was put on a football special where the fans could travel with the players and mingle etc etc and it was a huge success.
The piggys should have could up with an idea like this and avoid what is clearly becoming an embarrasment to the club and the fans.

It's admirable that some of the more rational and loyal Owls fans are putting a positive spin on it.
Wouldn't expect anything less but the reality is that the story is heading into a PR disaster for Wednesday.
Any neutral non-Sheffielder is probably thinking that the Owls are in far worse shape than they actually are.
It's a pity that "Wednesdayite" couldn't have delivered something to spare this embarrassment, and it really is embarrassing, no matter what some Owls would like to think.
Wednesday, are in all probability, going to be fodder for hundreds of jokes.
Don't know who broke the story but if it emanated from the Owls camp someone deserves a good kicking.

Wednesdayite did run a coach to away games. :)

I don't know if they still do, but I wouldn't wish a journey on the M1 and M25 in daylight hours on even people who I don't like very much.

No positve spin on it at all. The M1 is a nightmare, and I avoid the M25 altogether, unless absolutely necessary.
Journey times of 5 to 6 hours between Sheffield and London are not uncommon (especially Mondays and Fridays, and double the three hours by father regularly did it in, when it first opened), and then getting across the capital to Parkhurst Cell is another challenge..

Having lived in Canada so long, you may not appreciate just how traffic levels have increased in Britain, probably 20% up in the last decade alone.

There are whole sections of the M1 with 50 miles ph speed limits where is being widened, for 7 and 12 miles respecively.
12 mile traffic queues are not uncommon, at peak periods; which increase to 40 miles on days approaching bank holidays.

For all the jokes about the railway, 2 hours 20 minutes from Sheffield to St Pancs is very good, that is when all goes well, which is 97% of the time.

PS Hope I haven't put you off coming back for a holiday!

I assume that the Wednesday board budgeted for 20k to 25k crowds at Hillsborough. The last game 'attracted' just over 16k. If this hardcore of fans remains in a similar vein, with associated 'reductions' we will 'lose' between £3m to £8m in revenue.
We obviously can't absorb these losses, and the situation really does look dire.
As has been stated somewhere before, Wednesday look like they cannot offer BL or any of the players improved contract terms, so we'll see how loyal BL and the 'out of contract' 9 are.
Some players have to be jettisoned, but I trust BL to do the right things for SWFC.
Sadly, I don't see the Board doing likewise.
The situation, like it or lump it, is getting very, very, serious. :(

Do you think for one minute that IF Wednesday had paid £4m for a striker, had £800m in the owners bank, had no debts, had a 'plethora of top quality premiership bound players', had the 'best striker' outside of the Premiership, owned 2 or 3 other clubs in various parts of the globe, were in partnership with 1 or 2 other clubs around the world, had money to build an on-site hotel, and had such 'fantastic' fans, AND were 6th in the league, that we would only get 24,000+ for a home game, you want your head seeing to pal. 24,000 ?? ...... chicken feed.

If that's the best you can do, God help ya. It's pathetic!
Never mind, blame the credit crunch!

I went to Hillsborough (and up to 30% of away matches) from being 4 up to being 48. That's not a bad little stint. ;)

You were doing so well unto you said 6th in the League ;)

Nice to see you are keeping up with the comings and goings at BDTBL and honestly, Sheffield Derby matches aside, you lot would kill for 24,000 a match.

16,000 for Plymouth at home with tickets going for a fiver...Now THATS PATHETIC mate :hihi::hihi:

Bit rich of a blade to start crowing about our "pathetic" attendances. Until your Premiership season your gates were pathetic compared to ours. To be fair to your board they've played a blinder with the marketing and have managed to keep hold of the gloryhunters who only started attending 2 years ago, thanks to great deals on seasonticket prices.

If you're talking about pathetic attendances, I'd say that a season average of 13,700 THIS DECADE is rather embarrassing, and what about averaging LESS THAN 10K in 1987 when football was incredibly affordable - both of these at Championship level.

Ask yourself this - if you were in Wednesday's position, having had a decade of watching absolute dross, and your season tickets were as overpriced as ours - how bad would your gates be now?

Nah mate, Pathetic is having a go at poor crowds when your sat in a sofa in the mountains in Canada. I know I keep going on about it CB but your rantings about crowds at Hillsborough are getting pretty tedious.

You can't really find anything to say about SWFC as they're not doing as badly as you expected so you find something else to whine about. We're only a few points behind you in the league, We're unbeaten at Hillsborough and we beat your PATHETIC lot!..

If our financial situation was a little better we would normally ignore your silly remarks but as that doesn't seem to be getting any better I suppose we have to put up with the pig humour for a while. Whatever the crowds are at Hillsborough at the moment, Wednesday ARE the bigger club and this is why you keep repeating our recent statistics to make yourself believe that you're actually anywhere near us.

Feel free to use any of the above for a sig as that seems a permanent hobby up there in the snow capped cabins.

Oh dear. nothing like having the correct facts.
Owls 0 Plymouth 1 at Hillsborough.
We got that news even in our snow capped cabins.
Selective memory loss must be embarrassing.

Have you ever heard of staying on topic?

I'm more than happy to delete posts made by Blades, in fact I probably delete more posts by Blades than Owls.

Anyways, seems we don't want this thread open so it is closed.
