My boyfriend is away until Monday and I've been home alone since Friday night. :(

I keep waking up at the slightest sound thinking someone's in the house. :?

I think I'm too used to having a big strong man in bed next to me, because I'm sure I never used to be this much of a wimp! :D

Does anyone else get scared when they're home alone at night?

EDIT: If this is the last post I make then you will know that there really was someone in my house!

Alone? I can never hear any noise other than the loud snoring coming from that beagle over there! Not pointing at anybody in particular :suspect:

You need a dog, Sista  One with big teeth :D

I'm not all that good with dogs, never had one when I was growing up, you see.

I've always had cats though but a fat lot of good they'll do!

Thanks Shiesh, now I've got to worry about a spider jumping out at me whilst my boyfriend isn't here to get rid of it! :gag:

well, technically the answer is yes, i'm sure somebody gets scared.
But personally I don't. I'm not particularly big or particularly strong, but if someone breaks in they'll get an impromtu jiu jitsu lesson.

As I stay away nearly as often as i'm at home, i don't think the other half gets particularly worried either. But then she's only 1 grade lower than me, and keeps a bokken next to the bed.

I hate being alone in the house at night, I don't even go upstairs to bed. I'm afraid of the dark so I keep the lights on. I was even scared when my husband was a milkman and was out of the house from about 1o'clock in the morning. it sounds stupid from a woman who's nearly 60 years old doesn't it?

When I was first married to a soldier and he went away for 6 months at a time. I hated it. I would sleep facing the door with a 8 inch knife under my pillow.

I got used to it in the end, and now I have my rugby playing son in the house at night, but when he`s not there I don`t mind being alone. If anything is going to happen it will, and chances are it won`t so why worry.

I guess it is whatever you get used to. When I lived on my own it never bothered me, but now after living with my boyf for a few years, I do get slightly nervous when he goes away.

I have to double check the door and I seem to notice strange noises when he is away for the night.

I think its just something you get used to.

Once you've been on your own overnight 100 times, for example, and nothing has happened you'll get a better perspective on how dangerous the world is.

Okay, people do get murdered in their beds but it is such a rare occurence. You can't go through life worrying about remote possibilities that might happen, there are plenty of other things to worry about that are likely to happen.

Yodameister is correct though

But what he has said goes without saying.

Don't even mention the word murder to sparklesista :P

Don't worry sparklesista, i am sure most women feel a little nervous on their own at night. I still get nervous but when i was first married and left alone i used to be a nervous wreck. Workmates always knew if my husband was away because i had great big bags under my eyes thro lack of sleep.
i am not as bad now. Still nervous but what i do is leave the bedroom door slightly ajar and leave the stairs light on. This way if i do wake up during the night i feel comforted because i can see round the bedroom. Make sure you go to bed as late as possible so you are mega tired and may sleep better. Good luck.

There's no point in denying facts. Bad things happen. If you go through life thinking that nothing bad will happen to you ever then when it does happen you are going to go to pieces. (OK, admittedly if you were murdered in your bed then its fairly academic as there's not a lot you can do about it!)

Just in case a burglar enters my house at night, I keep a small card by my bedside, with some notes written on it. I have more or less memorised what I will say, so I have the notes in case I forget something. Here’s what the card says:

Welcome to my house. It’s a pleasure to meet you, even though the circumstances are somewhat unusual. Regardless of that, I would like to extend to you the same hospitality and courtesy to anyone who enters these portals. Don’t be alarmed dear boy, I’m sure we can have a rational discussion about what you would like to take and what I would like to dispose of – I have so much stuff I really don’t need anyway, so you may be doing me a favour (I need an excuse to get a Plasma TV and the a new DVD player and hi fi system). I am sure we can come to some rational arrangement. I will even help to carry stuff out for you, so that my remaining furniture is not damaged in the process.

Lets sit down in the lounge. I will wager that levering a door open must be quite tiring. – I’ll put the lights on and I’ll make you a cup of tea (coffee if you prefer) and have a plentiful supply of biscuits. I must say, I admire your proactive approach to the issue of the redistribution of wealth. So many of us are just concerned to just talk about this, or vote for a party which seeks redistribution in a very imperfect way through stealth taxes. Moreover, I’m impressed by your willingness to work very late at night – very few people are these days. Perhaps you have been inspired by Proudhon’s famous maxim that ‘All property is theft’. I remember discussing maxim this in a university seminar, but never thought that we had fully explored its ramifications on a praxiological level. Or perhaps it was the medieval conundrum ‘When Adam delved and Eve span, who was then the gentleman’, an idea which is supposed to have inspired the Peasant’s Revolt’. Have you read anything by Jean Genet? I must say, the French have made an art form of outlaw chic. I think we staid British are a bit lacking in this regard. No, I’m not trying to diss you man, and I am trying to show you respec’ –I’ll get the tea and biscuits. Then while he was relaxing in the lounge, I’d get the cordless chainsaw I keep in the kitchen, rip his head off and s**t down his neck’.

Well, I'm still here and alive and well so you're all gonna have to put up with me for a little bit longer :P

I stayed up til 5am :o so that I was sooo tired I couldn't keep my eyes open - always the best way for me to get to sleep without waking up and giving myself a heart attack every 5 minutes :)

Only one more night alone to go........ :?

P.S There is one advantage of being home alone at night which is that I can sprawl out across my bed in whatever position I like, (no, I'm not being rude!), because even though my bed is a size Super King, my boyfriend takes up most of the bed! Although he reckons I take up most of the bed and that he has a square inch of the bed to sleep on all night.

Know how you feel Sparkle...my bf has been away all weekend and I'm so scared. Left the landing light on!!!

It's funny how I've got used to him being there though. When he goes out with his mates I can't ever sleep properly until I hear him come through the door. Shame he usually smells of vodka and kebabs though :gag: :hihi:
