Just received a pink 'notice of intended prosecution' letter from the police.
It seems that I was photographed doing 38MPH in a 30MPH zone  at Norfolk Hill, Grenoside.

So it's a first offence. Anyone know what I should expect - Points on my license? and how much will the fine be, or can this be variable?

I am well aware of the limit at Norfolk Hill and always take it easy, too. Obviously not on this occasion - a lapse of concentration rather wanting to 'flout the law'

I had exactly the same situation over 18 months ago. I did 38 in a 30 zone (last time Iwas there it was a 40 zone). i got flashed (nearly caused an accident, it was so bright I ducked, didn't know what it was.).

I then got the pink slip to complete. I completed all my details and sent it off without signing. they wrote to me again, told me I had not signed it and could I fill it in and sign it.
I filled it in again but didn't sign. Same again, I didn't sign again. I have never heard anything from them since and I don't have points on my licence and never paid a fine.

I don't think (unless they have changed it) they can force you to sign it, which makes them unable to do anything.

As soon as you get the prosecution you must call your insurance company and inform them.
They usually wont charge you any more but it will affect your renewal quote.

If you dont mention it to the insurance company and you have an accident it will void your insurance cos you haven't made them aware.

Take from someone who used to work for Norwich Union Direct Car Insurance... me.

As soon as the conviction is made then you need to inform them. As soon as the points are on your licence is fine because you'll the need the conviction code which will be printed on your licence when you get it back.

Sounds a daft question but say your in a 30mph zone just how much over 30mph do you have to be doing before you get a ticket? I've heard of a 10% rule but is this correct? I think I got caught the other day by a mobile unit... first time for me if it is but I'm sure I wasn't doing any more than 32...

I thought it was 10% plus 3 mph.....but apparently they;ve gone zero tolerance now. so 31 and you're busted!

I got one going 58 on the M1 to leeds (in a 50 zone....)

they're cracking down :( not like it actually helps get the dangerous drivers off the roads! grrr!

The wording on my fine was:

"To avoid conviction, you must pay the fixed penalty within...bla, bla, bla"

I would assume then that i have in the past been issued with a fixed penalty notice, but i have not been convicted of any driving offences. What do you think?

Say it was a new car and you needed to practice its performance. Works for some I hear.

I got a speeding fine fairly recently too :suspect: £60 and 3 points. First time in my life but ya do the crime ya pay the fine!

Wish i'd known about not signing the form!

Anyway, it doesn't seem to matter what speed you're doing if you're over the limit that's it.

Someone I know was clocked doing something daft like 58 in a 30 zone - and got exactly the same penalty £60 and 3 points.

I didn't know about the insurance thing tho! The insurance isn't in my name (it's in hubby's) but I guess he should still inform them?

I was never one for speeding, but now I stick to the speed limit and it's amazing how many people overtake me at speed in dangerous locations where there's no overtaking - simply because I'm sticking to the speed limit - I don't think that makes the roads any safer at all.

You can check now if you have been speeding by going on to their database directly through the Freedom of Information Act

Did you know that recent government legislation changing the freedom of information act gives you access to speed camera offences - registered in the last twelve months and placed on a freely accessible website?

Did you also know that everytime your car goes a
mile or so over the limit - it is registered and placed on the database. You only get a ticket if you are 10% + 2mph over the limit or if you receive 20 near misses! You can now check how many you have against your cars registration number.

Go to this website: www.e-database.co.uk
it will ask you for a password - but just click on the
"need a login" button and you'll be given one on the pop up window. On the right there is a click-on button which even shows the picture taken when you were speeding
check it out.

It does matter. If you're going ridiculously over the limit then you'll get a court summons, not just a ticket. I think 50mph in a 30zone can get a court summons so your friend was lucky.

Ta T020

I was a bit surprised when the person only got the same penalty as me. Yup, this person really was lucky! But I tell you what - that person sticks to the speed limit now too, so the speed camera did what it's supposed to do and has slowed this person down.

Not if it goes through the automated procedure.

Although if you pull the not signing trick there's nothing to stop them taking you to court, you'll almost certainly get a worse penalty from a magistrate in that case.
