View Full Version : Do you have a so-called "Guilty Conscience"?
I am quite often startled by people talking to me, when I am concentrating on something else, and make the comment "I must have a guilty conscience".
However, I know of people who hear part of a conversation between others, and immediately jump to the conclusion that the conversation is about them, and wade in defending themselves. I wouldn't go as far as to say that is paranoia, because that is a symptom of mental illness and a lot more serious.
Anyway I thought it would be interesting to do a poll on the subject of "guilty conscience".

Have you considered speaking to a shrink?
redrobbo 20-05-2005, 06:48 Why would anyone feel they have a guilty conscience when spoken to?
However, I have known people who assume that people standing around talking must be talking about them! This is nothing to do with having a guilty conscience. It is everything to do with paranoia - they genuinely believe that people are conspiring against them (for whatever reasons, e.g., rivals for their job, etc.).

I don't know whether people say it much these days, but when I were nobbut a lass, if you jumped in a startled way when someone came up behind you and said your name, which I presume is what Ann-x means ... they used to say you must have a guilty conscience?
Presumably meaning that if your conscience was clear of any wrongdoing, you wouldn't jump like a frightened rabbit. :D
Thankyou, rubydazzler, for that charming and amusing posting. We are indeed privileged to hear from someone who was 'nobbut a lass', as you quaintly phrase it, in the early 1900s. One can imagine that there are many exciting tales about Zeppelins, the advent of the motor car and diptheria that you are just bursting to relate.

obnoxious is the word that comes to mind when this sort of thing is written
Pathetic lack of humour is what springs to mind when an interfering little prat like you decides to chip in. Mind your own damned business. Ruby can look after herself.
rainbow2411 20-05-2005, 13:02 I thought obnoxious was a bit strong but turns out it was just right
Are you trying to tell me something, Rainbow?!
Being brought up in the Catholic Faith has left me with a perminant feeling of guilt.
Very strong on guilt are those nuns.

1) being the youngest, newest, most dynamic & most professional of 3 nurses in a private medical ctr then yes most people at work are talking about me.
2) People that love & respect me NEVER talk about me
3) Do I care?
4) If I'm deep in thought or occupied & some silly sausage creeps up then yes, I'm startled; welcome to life.
5) :|

Opinion:
'Guilt' is perhaps not the appropriate word for the poll choices.
'Nervous' or 'jumpy' is probably more to the point...
But then, never having commited a criminal act, I'm not sure how a 'guilty' person would or should react :D

Someone got out of bed on the wrong side this morning! Anyone else been on the receiving end of that quaint and amusing saying? My granny was fond of that one but as my bed was against the wall ... there was only one side anyway :loopy:
There surely must be a saying about quick glimpses of true colours - when the mask slips for a moment ... let's see - Manners maketh man? Fine feathers make fine birds? oh no, that's about clothes lol. I don't think "fair words butter no parsnips" really applies, but then I never could work that one out either. :D
I had a guilty concience when 'unknowingly' my son, in his pushchair, aged 18 mths cleared the Ladybird rack of socks in Woolies into his pushchair....
I only discovered this after returning to the car with only 2 minutes to spare on the parking tariff so kept the socks....shame he'd pinched off the girlie rack so gave them away to a friend...
Be interesting to see if Kristian posts about feeling guilty after 'biting a friend'.....
royjames 22-05-2005, 00:20 I will be very suprised if their is anyone who does not have something that makes them feel guilty.
But its best to keep it to yourself.;)
Well there's these voices, these voices, I hear them, and when they talk I follow, I follow, I follow.

in that case maybe THIS (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41176) is where you should be posting.
Perhaps the most appropriate saying for this is "A leader not a follower be" ;)
