I am going to move to Sheffield as an engineering PhD student. How much is it possible for me to find a part time job there?
Thank you in advance.

If you are an overseas student you might find it more difficult. No real reason for that, but all the overseas students I have spoken to have found it hard getting jobs in places other than Tesco, Asda etc. So large hypermarket retail might be the answer....

Many thanks for your help.
Yes I am an overseas student.
May I ask how much per hour is approximately the payment.
AND
Since Poppins is very interested I should say that it is 5 times in a day but they all just take about 20 minutes.

Honestly what is your problem? It's not like all his prayers are gonna be said during working hours are they? There is no need to start going into his religion when all he is asking for is whether it is easy to find a job in Sheffield. Honestly, cut him some slack.

5 lots of 20 mins in a working day?! Is that all?! That's 1 hour 40 mins out of the average 8 hour working day... I'm converting to Islam. :hihi:

5 times a day, not 5 times a working day. This thread is implying certain things that aren't particularly welcoming now are they?

I mean 20 mins a day not 1 hour and 40 mins.

I think this forum is about Jobs and employment not religious matterials. So, if you want to discuss about religion please pm me or ask the moderator to create a religious forum to talk there.

Mod Note: Let's keep this on topic please. Mohammad's religious beliefs are nothing to do with his search for work. Thanks

Mohammad could start a religious post, i for one am interested in their religion, i'm sure he would like to ask questions about our's too, don't see anything wrong in that, then if the "Bad Boys" join in, just close it down.

So what religions are these "their" and "our's" exactly? Seems that you're assuming an awful lol ... and why would mohammad want to start a thread anyway? He's just looking for a job, you're the one seems to be wanting a religious discussion ...

Seeing as you live in the USA, I could assume that you're a fundamentalist Christian or whatever "they" call themselves over there but it seems you might actually be a Roman Catholic judging by where you say you went to school, a convent and St Patrick's?

I'm neither ... so guess you need to be clearer on your point?

Thanks for choosing one of our Universities to study at. Hope you settle well in Sheffield, mohammad, and soon find a job of some sort or another. Sheffield (UK) people are very friendly, really! :D

Maybe he doesn't want to discuss his religion?

If you are so interested poppins maybe YOU should start a discussion about Islam. Although I'm not so sure you are genuinely "interested", part of me thinks you just want to start having a go at people...

Ruby - I totally agree!

Well if you are that interested about Islam how about you start a thread about it yourself "love" instead of going off the topic that Mohammed originally asked about.

I 'm beginning to wonder what *your* problem is.

I am white non-Muslim and got caught out last year during Ramadam. I was at a supermarket, having walked some distance there and needed a cab home. I couldn't get one for love nor money and all the taxi firms I rang said it was because of Ramadam.

Given I had a torn calf muscle and really was having problems walking another step, this was rather a difficult situation for me.

I went to work that evening and was talking to a Muslim workmate about it in the canteen. One white colleague reacted exactly the way you are doing here and tried to bully and shout me down by painting a picture that I was some racist fascist white bitch for even talking about different religions and their effect on us all today. This colleague was a lying little **** of a permie who was frightened because this little tempie here could do 3 times as much work as her in half the time and she didn't want me to get a permanent placement and was doing everything she could to prevent it.
I'm still confused as to whether teaching a Nigerian Masters student Java at the time and charging him half price because of his financial situation as a foreign student counted as racism or not. Perhaps you could tell me?

My *actual* point at the time was what's up with all the non-Muslim taxi drivers and why aren't they out there making a killing on fares while the Muslims are in chapel (sorry that should be a mosque I know) and why weren't there any cab companies in Sheffield actually operating as cab companies during Ramadam? That is in no way a critical comment on Islam or Ramadam but on the management of the cab companies by the cab companies!

So I think popins is perfectly entitled to ask a Muslim some questions whch might actually help him/her in some way. I simply wonder why you, and other white folk I've met round here, find informative discourse between different people with different experiences threatening and need to attack it?

I am sure all devout Muslims have to fit in their religious duties around the rest of their life in whatever society they live in around the world.

I am equally sure there are sadly plenty of non-devout Muslims who will abuse whatever religious provisions are made for their more devout brothers and sisters.

And I don't think it's politically incorrect to say that or being critical of Islam either.

Some people live in a religious framework and need that to be respected and some people don't live in a religious framework and some of each of those classes of people may well abuse a system for their own purpose. And that's not because they are Methodist or Muslim, white, black or sky-blue-pink-with-yellow-polka-dots, it's because they are human.

And please pardon my off topic rant, OP, I would agree with another poster that you may find work at some of the larger retail outlets that may fit in with your PhD regime. There are a lot of PhD and Masters students doing this. They usually pay about £5.25 an hour with a percentage extra for any unsocial hours. If your English is good then you might get some work at the University taking tutorials and workshops which pay a much better rate.

Good luck with the PhD.
