I know Gerald and his family but have'nt seen them for years now. I have had a drink with him a few times. I seem to remember he got the contract to knock down the old Spear and Jackson building on Sutherland st around 1990. Your right he is a character but not a man to be crossed.

Are they the Mullens of the famous mansions on Chesterfield road. Big family during the war probably a dozen at least. I knew one of them, was in my class at Meersbrook Bank School.

he used to play cards and other things in the montgomery hotel at nether edge,he once saved a mans life who was glassed in the neck and he stopped him bleeding.thats true,i knew a man who was there at the time, still, he wasnt the sort i would pick as a mate,in the late 60's he and another well known villain were in the green dragon attercliffe, they let off a shotgun in the pub yard, aimed at the gate, just missed a young lass pushing a pram, i was a couple of yards behind her at the time..

He crossed Arthur Thompson (Glasgow gangster) in the early 60s got very badly beaten up and moved here to get out of the way. He is or was a cousin of Tommy (Fat boy) Mckardle) who went missing about the same time and was last seen in the Loch Ness area attempting the Loch Swim whilst tied to a large piece of concrete.

Gerald brought his hard man act with him but found that in a kinder gentler Sheffield he was not quite as hard as he thought when he obtained a number of silver medals when competing against the local psycopaths.

That's sort of true, the reason Gerald was on hand to help was because He'd done the glassing. Mel Brown was the lucky recipient. Gerald then followed him to the Hallamshire supposedly to finish the job off.(Hearsay).
I last saw Gerald at Max Edwards funeral probably 2005 or 6.

I "got to know" GM many years ago in the Old Crown on London Road....Have to say that he was always right as rain with me on the few times we met, but I remember saying to the landlord that I wouldn't like to cross him!
He replied that it wasn't GM I should worry about - it was the bloke who gave him that scar!

Funny how Scots criminals and gangsters are attracted Sheffield and South Yorkshire, at the moment there is one running Feba Custodia a security company (se Panorama about three months ago).

Also there is the guy who owns the racing stable at Bawtry who, also according to Panorama is from the Glasgow gangster fraternity.

There's no more frightening sight than seelng Gerry Mullen coming towards you to give you an attitude adjustment. I was dealing blackjack at the original Bonaparte's casino on Bank street in 1979. He asked for another card, which I dealt to him. He didn't like that card (which busted him) and said that he'd said "no card" Not really knowing about Mr Mullens CV, I just took his losing bet and placed it in my tray........ That's when things went pear shaped.:help: He got off his stool and attempted to climb over the velvet rope that hung between the gaming tables. I instinctively (read panic) grabbed the thick rope and lifted it as high as I could between his legs and had him floundering around trying to keep his balance. Meanwhile the pit boss, who knew Gerry Mullen's reputation, had called the police, who soon arrived.... with the dog. They took charge of the situation and he was escorted from the premises and banned from the club. Had I known more about him beforehand he could have had any card he wanted :hihi:

He wasn't in the same league as the likes of Denis Hobson, Ray Morgan and Danny Shenton who were very hard but also very fair, not a bully amongst them.

I remember Gerald Mullen picking on the Nursery Tavern's self appointed hardman in the 70's, he didn't back down but Gerald did. He always had a small drunken guy with him, I mean drunk 24/7, I think that he was Scottish to.

One night in the Crown on London Rd, i was getting served at the side of Gerald, and his cronies at the bar. As the barmaid placed the poured drinks onto the bar, suddenly Gerald picks up one of my drinks and starts drinking it, at this point shall i say something, or just but another?

I was sweating, then plucks up the courage to tell him (young and stupid then), he just turned and looked at me, for what seemed like an eternity, 'naa problem lad, you can have mine, and ordered me another drink', what a relief, i thought i was going to be decked any second!, but with respect to the guy he did buy me another drink, what could have been a ganuine mistake.

About a couple of weeks later was the incident in the Montgomery Hotel .

I suppose the mans reputation went before him, and can remember him going in the Crown, and Tramway, the last time i saw him was one Christmas Day Dinnertime some time ago, in the Ball Inn.
