View Full Version : School reunions - how much should I pay?

I received an email the other day (which came via FriendsReunited) informing me that my year at school, based on the year I left (1985) is having a reunion.

Very good, I thought and even better when I realised it is to be held at a pub I frequent, close to home. The only problem that was if I want to go I have to forward a cheque to the value of ten pounds.

Now I don't want to sound a skin-flint, but the question is: Why should I pay anything at all? What if I happen to be in the pub anyway on the night of the reunion? Are they going to turf me out?

The reason why I am asking is not such much because of my having to pay, but what if my wife wanted to come along, as she usually accompanies me when I visit this pub anyway? She shouldn't be expected to pay, but if I pay for myself and the reunion takes place in a function room (away from the main area of the pub) then we'd end up not being together.

Which to some might sound a wonderful arrangement. I don't mind paying to cover expenses and it would be nice to see some old faces. But I could do that merely by being in the pub on the night of the reunion anyway.

Comments from those in the know please.

I would imagine it will be held in a private function room possibly with buffet but doesn't hurt to ask....my concern is whether Friends Reunited are pocketing the money just for informing you ?? You would expect the organiser would be collecting the funds not them..:suspect:

I went on a school reunion for my old comp - Dinnington, a few years ago.
Nothing to do with Friends reunited.
Saw an ad in the paper.

Frankly I wish I hadn't have bothered.

Same in-crowd cliques bunching together (in-crowd as they were at school) looking at old photo's of each other, boasting at how many kids they've got playing rugby for England under 3's or how little Krystell is playing flute, violin, guitar & reading English lit at 5, at their jobs, mortgages, 4WD family Chelsea tractors... you get the idea...

Quite sad really. Don't seem to have moved on. No attempt to communicate with anyone not in the school in-crowd.

The in-crowd became the 'Losers' :hihi:

I met 1 old mate & we swapped addy's.

Therefore my advice, turn up anyway & keep your tenner. You'll probably get in with the crowds if its a function room job.
If on the other hand it's just the old gits that turn up; stay where you are at the bar, you may well find the company of your lady a more fulfilling & relaxing alternative.
