View Full Version : Why doesn't the Sheffield Star know where Wincobank is?
I saw this on the Star's website.
I know Wincobank has it's problems but whenever anything happens within a 10 mile radius of Fife Street it's put down as Wincobank. Jenkin, as far as I remember was always in Brightside. It was the same when that horrible story broke about the family on the Flower Estate. That is Shiregreen but on the national news it said Wincobank. Surely a local paper should know better.
ok rant over

Same goes for most estate agents, either they don't know Sheffield very well at all, or they try to make out like certain properties are in the nearest lucrative area, ie saying a house in Sharrow is in the desirable Nether Edge or Ecclesall.
Tch!

My friend lived on Hinde house lane and always insisted it was High Wincobank and not the Flower Estate.
I live on Shiregreen which is supposed to be Lower Shiregreen and have always called the Flower Estate just that and not Shiregreen.
Its a bit

My grandad grew up on the Flower and he would have said something about the Hinde House people trying to associate themselves with the nicer area ;)

coopster1974 19-05-2005, 17:21 Very similar to Foxhill. Its not an area, just the name of the estate. The actual name of the area is Birley Carr.
spartacus 19-05-2005, 17:30 Spot on, Ally68. What miffs me is when newsreaders, local radio or local tv, pronounce the estate's name wrong. I suppose, it's because most of the presenters are from other regions.

Yeah, like when they pronounce Ecclesall with an h, ie Eccleshall :D
Sorry, couldn't resist...
susa41981 19-05-2005, 17:53 Flower esate is most definately WINCOBANK
spartacus 19-05-2005, 18:41 Or Southey (Sowthy) as Suthy.
HeffyPye 19-05-2005, 19:47 Would Say Jenkin Hill is Wincobank and Flower Estate is Defiantely Wincobank - (Couldn't decide whether or not I lived in Wincobank or Shiregreen though as was on the very border more or less next dorr to the Viccy Wine) -- where is that?
when i grew up round there, flower estate was known as shiregreen......we lived on jepson road....and i think we were kinda shiregreen/wincobank borders too!!
when we lived on newman road, we were wincobank.
...granted this was 20 odd years ago....:D
my friend lived on dafodil...and it was part of shiregreen to everyone then.
:D
Wincobank has the postcode S9, Shiregreen has S5. I think you'll find Shiregreen Lane is S5.

Flower estate is definately not Wincobank it's Shiregreen
Seem to remember this argument before on an old thread.
I was born in Wincobank and the flower estate is not Wincobank its Shiregreen- Sheffield 5 .
Although I am an ex-pat, living across the Pennines in darkest Lancashire [where a blue-eyed man is looked upon with great suspicion], this thread has rattled my cage.
The geographical errors re Wincobank are annoying. To my knowledge, parts of the Flower Estate are High Wincobank, and others [Bracken Rd etc] are Shiregreen. Jenkin Hill is, as far as I am aware, Brightside. Hinde House Lane is, I believe, High Wincobank. Newman Road is definately Wincobank. No doubt some demented bloody fool on The Star will one day call Fife Street Blackburn [Rotherham].
Interestingly,or not as the case may be, there is a distinct and definate sharp change in accent and speech patterns to be encountered, when one walks 'under the bridges' from Wincobank to Blackburn. The natives of Blackburn can be told immediately from their Wincobank counterparts by their ,'Fotty osses cumming oer t'hill' ['Forty horses are coming over the hill'] accent. It is basically the Sheffield/Rotherham divide.
Memories come flooding back, as I type this from our Southport home. Tonight I shall probably dream of Wooley Woods...

Don't forget the gentle hum of the big hammer to rock you to sleep. :D
Postcodes don't necessarily denote the same area S5 is also parts of Southy Green and Parsons Cross neither of which are Shiregreen.
Ooooooooooooooooo the snobbery :hihi:

How many ways can "Wincobank" be pronounced? I can only think of 1.

Think a certain vowel can and was replaced by another vowel in some cirumstances:D
redrobbo 19-05-2005, 21:36 What constitutes a district or an area can be confusing. Doesn't help if a place also gets misspelled or mispronounced. There's a Mod who states his location is Lowfields.
