View Full Version : Coffee Culture
Dr Feelgood 10-03-2003, 15:31 Hey!
I have heard from a an official source that Starbucks are finally opening up in Sheffield's Meadowhall in three months - hallelulah! Also, apparently Caffe Nero are on the hunt for property in the city. Sounds like progress.
Could any coffee lovers out there in Sheff let me know the best places to get a capuccino?
Ciao!
:)
Coffee.com and Coffee Revolution (or something) are right next to each other in the centre of town. They are just up the road from Cutlers Hall (or the Cathedral). Not sure which one does the best coffee though.
I like Coffee Revolution.
There's also Costa Coffee, in Waterstones bookshop in Orchard Square. Nice coffee but a bit pricey and there aren't enough seats (have I just contradicted myself?)
@Andy, there's also a Costa in the Abbey National round the corner on Fargate - again limited seating!
Debenhams have some kind of Coffee caff on the first floor, and Marks n Sparks have summat on Fargate(2nd floor of the store) - it always smells of coffee but I think it's more of an upmarket instore caff??!!
And I'm not sure but I think there might be summat in the Winter Gardens (only been in once so can't really remember!)

Yeah, I know, but I work for one of Abbey National's competitors, so I don't like going in there
The one in M&S is OK - the coffee is decent and they open at 8am so I can go in for a coffee before work. It's a shame they don't do a better range of food though - just sandwiches and nothing I really fancy eating at breakfast time.
JonHarrison 10-03-2003, 17:21 Surely theres an opening for the Cathedral to get their act together and have a nice coffee/morning cafe withing their grounds.
Perfect site?
McDonalds new "Café" style Coffee is the same as Pret á Mangé's used to be i think

Well, they certainly wouldn't have a problem with limited seating ;-)
JonHarrison 10-03-2003, 17:40 Decor would be very fancy too! Nice windows.
Not sure about the live "entertainment" though...
JonHarrison 10-03-2003, 17:55 You could at least have an early morning sing along though!
Kum by yah me lord....
Sunday opening would be another bonus.
RPG mentioned Pret á Mangé - remember Sheffield holds the distinction of being the only city where they closed down.
JonHarrison 10-03-2003, 18:02 There's always the confessional for the expresso addicts.
You have sinned, now go and do 4 hail marys and a double expresso
JonHarrison 10-03-2003, 18:03 I honestly believe that now is the time to get back into the city
Michael_W 10-03-2003, 18:05 Yeah Pret didn't last long, maybe us Sheffielders don't like paying 3 quid for a sarni ???

Here's the Observor's observations:
There is something you should know about the city of Sheffield: its one branch of Pret A Manger closed down after just a few months due to lack of interest. It is proof, if proof were needed, that Britain's food revolution is still stuck in the Molotov cocktail-lobbing stage. Apparently, the idea of well-made sandwiches which don't contain flaccid ham and watery tomato was just too outré for the people of South Yorkshire's first city.
I am not claiming that Pret A Manger is the be all and end all. It has its faults. But doesn't the company's failure in the city suggest a large part of the populace has undergone a radical taste bypass?
Michael_W 10-03-2003, 18:22 Obviously the reporter was not from the Steel City, I'm sure cost not taste was the problem. I liked Pret sarnis etc... but the prices were a little steep for your average butty munching Sheffielder, anyone agree ?
plus it was in as was before the "dead" part of meadowhall
El Duderino 10-03-2003, 18:47 Obviously the reporter was not from the Steel City, I'm sure cost not taste was the problem. I liked Pret sarnis etc... but the prices were a little steep for your average butty munching Sheffielder, anyone agree ?
No. It was in the wrong location as will Starbucks be if it goes there.
Michael_W 10-03-2003, 18:58 Wrong location maybe, but I know plenty of people who would not pay those prices I am not criticising them, I am a born and bred Sheffielder myself and I know how shrewd people can be !!!!
I think you'll find the average wages in Sheffield are less than many other big cities.
El Duderino 10-03-2003, 19:06 It's a question of taste. Many born and bred Sheffielders will not think twice about spending £2-£3 on a pint of beer or a glass of wine. Pret was situated next to a Burgerking at Meadowhall. What could you get for £3 there?
Michael_W 10-03-2003, 19:15 Good point, can't disagree with that, but the price of a pint will never stop people drinking no matter what their budget. Having said that I've heard many grumble at a penny on a pint increase over the years !
not even a kids meal now i think :P
its really expensive in BK
How much is it? the last cappuchino I had was in Venice two years ago and it cost us an arm and a leg, One small cup was the equivelent of £5.
You had to pay it as that was the only way you could sit down, or you had to sit on the floor. Tourists prices? I would say rip offs!!! :o :o :o

Perhaps a new market for the Blue Moon Cafe to break into?
Yeah Pret didn't last long, maybe us Sheffielders don't like paying 3 quid for a sarni ???
It is pricey for a sandwich, but pret sarnies are horny! mmmmmm!
The chicken, avocado, rocket and pine nuts one!
Back to coffee.....I will try some of these places....revolution on eccy road is ok.... I do like my coffee perculator at home though, much cheaper!
JonHarrison 21-03-2003, 08:10 Back to yours for coffee then Foxxx?

True, I adore coffee at home too, it's really great when someone else makes it for you!! :)
pink-kitten 25-03-2003, 11:27 Hi everyone! I used to work at the Pret a manger in Meadowhall...the prices were embarassing! But we used to get to take bin bags full of sarnies home at the end of the day! :P

Is that because you didn't sell any?
pink-kitten 25-03-2003, 11:42 Yep...we could take home everythting that didnt get sold...which was a lot! I was the only person who would take sushi tho! i can remember 1 day the manager sent me out givin every1 free milkshakes because we werent selling anything!
There have been several mentions of Coffee Revolution... nice coffee, but a far superior rival (on Ecclesall Road) is "Spoilt For Choice", across the road from Berkely Precinct/Tesco. 10p cheaper for a large one. Great Sarnies and far superior host banter too.
The need is not for coffee shops in Meadowhall (there are plenty enough already). The need is in the city centre itself. I travel to Manchester a lot and wish Sheffield had a quarter as many cafes. A bit of competition would improve what is already here. Coffee Revolution on Church Street is only so-so. The espresso is normally drinkable (and sometimes very good) but the service is appallingly slow. I think the owner has lost interest. The place certainly doesn't seem to be as busy as it was a year ago.
I have noticed that a lot of shops have moved from the row opposite The Forum - maybe one of these could become a coffee shop?
g
A major reason the shops have moved is that the rents at those sites have been hugely inflated over recent years/months.
Even Mr Kites/Casablancaa had to move! shocker.
baublebag 19-04-2003, 18:46 The other day I had a shockingly good latte in that big Sainsburys at Millhouses. A very nice surprise and a sight cheaper than poxy Starbucks.
Closer to home, as far as I can tell there is not one single espresso machine in the >4 square kms of dreaded coffee desert that is Crookesmoor, Upperthorpe and Walkley. Does anybody know of one?
E-Man Groovin 22-04-2003, 14:42 Why oh why oh why are you all getting excited about the thought of those nasty, contrived, corporate chains coming to Sheffield. They are bland, unoriginal and destroy the individual character of any town or city. I have recently lived in Brighton and Kew and both of those areas lost something when Starbucks set up shop there.
Where's the northern entrepreneurial spirit? If you want cool funky coffee shops why don't Sheffielders set them up themselves! I used to adore the bijou Cafe Sol on Eccleshall Road (which closed down recently) and just across from me now is the fantastic Coffee Moco on West Street. The more places like this, the better I say!
It may be an age thing but the main reason I don't use coffee shops is the piped music. I either go in to chat or read the newspapers not to listen to some badly reproduced muzac.
Another problem is cigarette smoke. The sooner smoking is banned in food outlets the better.
The situation in Manchester is dire. I've just finished a 9 month contract over there and apart from Pret all the coffee shops allowed smoking. The only respite was in the major stores and, yes you guessed, plinky plonk music is played in all of those. Even in Waterstones the music from the main shop could be heard in the coffee shop. What's that about? Music in a book shop?????
Looking for peace, quiet and a smoke free atmosphere.
:D

lucky you!!... free sarnies!!!
:P i want some... hehehe..
Dr Feelgood 08-05-2003, 08:44 Since moving to Sheffield I have discovered a gem of a cafe called
Marx Espresso Bar. It's a very cool, cosy little joint in Broomhill - on Glossop Rd, opposite Nibbles Pizza.
Had a lovely cappucino. Good value for money . Friendly proprietor who has recently opened up. Would recommend you check it out when in the area and want a coffee. :D
Coffee Revolution in town seems to have changed its name. Can't remember what the new name was though, and I don't know if anything else has changed...
Dont know about Sheffield, but we had a very nice cup of cappachino in Massarellas in Chesterfield on Saturday, it is in the shopping arcade near to the open air market.
i found Marks Cafe absolutely disgusting.the girls at the counter were unfriendly, the service was extremely sloooooow and the coffee i ordered nothing special.infact it was all dribbling out of the mug and was a complete mess.in a friendly place like sheffield i could not believe the snobbish and appalling behaviour of the staff.they ought to learn some respect for the customers.on top of that in the name of art they had a horrific portrait on the wall(a cross between a baby and a man)which was very displeasing to the eyes
my favourite place is definitely the coffee revolution on Ecclesall Road.great coffee,gr8 service and fantastic atmosphere
The coffee in Morrisons is awful, as is the service. When I went in, the staff thought having a gossip about who was seeing who was more important than taking money from the customers, and when she did serve, she gave me a dirty look because I dared to pay with a £10 note!
Dr Feelgood 19-07-2003, 08:05 You can get a nice coffee in nice surroundings at Casa just near the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.
Dr Feelgood 04-09-2003, 11:17 Tried Utopia Coffee Lounge at West One last weekend.
It's cool, hip, funky, with top coffee! Got to be Sheff's No. 1
coffee house!
"Check it out now, it's a funk soul brother!":)
Phanerothyme 04-09-2003, 13:31 Cafe #9 at Netheredge Crossroads (next door to the Post Office, Threshers and Zed's makes good espresso, latte etc, has a wide range of good teas, and a nice selection of grillable vegetarian food.
It's stacked with interesting books and newpapers as well as cards, chess and backgammon sets and dominoes, should you want to while away a little longer than usual.
Big tables, great coffee, seating outside, friendly staff and a bohemian atmosphere make Cafe #9 a brilliant cafe. Also, they have the rather pleasant contintental practice of asking you to pay for your food and drink after you have eaten/drunk.
On top of all that, the music is always an eclectic mix of the familiar (Hendrix, Beefheart) and the unknown, the books are interesting, there are original artworks on the walls and they are child friendly, although there are no non-smoking areas.
And the loo is a rather cold affair round the back, which entails a trip out the front door and into the yard.
And no, I'm not connected with them in any way, despite the fact I think this is BY FAR the best cafe anywhere in Sheffield.
mr craig 04-09-2003, 21:54 Well i dont know what other peoples opinion on this is,but i hate it when people go into pubs to drink coffee.I know that the Coffee Revolution has now got a drinks licence, but i would never dream of going in there to have a few beers,so wht people feel the need to come in to pubs and hold up the bar for 5 mins whule there coffee is being made is beyond me.
I was in the new revo in Weast One l;ast saturday after noon and there were two women in front of me ordering coffee's and it tied the barmaid up fpr a good 5 mins,i know it don't sound much but it annoyed the hell out of me considering that utopia, whuch aparently one of the best coffee shops in sheffield was about 10 yards away!!
Nonnas on Eccelsall Road. Ok, its not cheap, and you don't get half a pint of coffee in a designer mug, but it is the best I've had. Good range of also quite pricey things to eat at lunch. The food in the evening is great too..
Coffee.com used to be fab, but I think its not been so good of late. Could be because I no longer work right by the place so I'm an occaisonal punter rather than a regular.. (Which itself isn't great, but there does seem to be a difference in service with some of these places depending on how regualrly you go).
O'Briens sandwich shop just off Fargate, (is it Chapel Walk) used to be excellent for both food and coffee.. Not been there in ages, (not in town much)..
alchresearch 05-09-2003, 11:55 Surely giving people more choice in non-alcoholic drinks is a good thing. It's the staff who need training on task delegation if you're being made to wait.
Have to agree with Phanerothyme on Cafe #9 - a lovely place to while away an hour, and the coffee is usually excellent. I miss it greatly, since moving across the city.
Of the corporates, Caffe Nero (when it arrives) is the only one worth patronising, imho.
tinajones 05-09-2003, 13:57 biggest con ever is coffee shops, esp when its not fair traded stuff - they must make a packet.
i just take a cafetiere to work and keep some fresh coffee in the fridge. but of course you can't carry one of the around with you whilst out shopping.
skinny lattes at liquid lunch (in the crucible) are worthy of my cash tho. and FOB is ok nr the cathedral. suppose i look for service and atmosphere as opposed to being a coffee connoisseur.

Nonnas is the best coffee I've ever been served anywhere in the UK. No doubt about that. And the food is the best Italian grub I've had in Britain too.
I don't live in Sheff any more so don't know some of the places you're mentioning, but Nonnas is miles ahead of most of those big chains in quality terms. And the authentic Italian vibe is irresistible!

Absolutely agree. Nonnas is truly wonderful. It would grace any city anywhere in the world.
I find that almost everwhere I go whether on holiday in the U.K.or in Sheffield serve a good capachino, the only difference is the price, because I have paid as little as 70P. and as much as £1.68p.
just take a look at the price list before you order.

It took you 3 and a half years to think of that?
I'd say the best place for a coffee in the city centre has to be
Cafe Latino on Fargate, and no before you say anything i don't work there.
The coffee there really is the nicest one you'll find
My girlfriends a bit of a coffee expert (being Spanish) and it's the only place she'll go in the city centre.
Really good for take out too, you get large for the price of a regular
and don't get me started on their cheesecakes , my god!!
swordfish1 15-03-2007, 13:20 Best coffee has to be at my house. Freshly ground and smells gorgeous.
Still have to hide the reciept of how much the coffee machine cost from my wife tho!!:loopy:
Probably saved me money tho (that's my excuse) as I used to walk into town 3 or 4 times a week and buy a coffee, but now I make my own and take it with me.

Cant be bothered to read all the posts on this thread so apologies if anyone has mentioned this but Cafe Nero already has two coffee shops in sheff.
One at the Peace Gardens, next to McDonald hotel, and one on Eccy Road.
And I might be wrong, but have an idea Abbey National Costa is no more.

That shows how far behind Leeds we are. Leeds has three Pret a Mangers, and they always seem to be packed.
discodown 17-03-2007, 09:06 I've got a question.
i don't drink coffee in fact i hate the stuff. Is it really that much better coffee paying £2-3 from starbucks when you get pretty much the same stuff from wetherspoons for less than a quid?
also i don't think pret shut because people won't pay £3 for a sandwich, considering there are 4 subways in sheff that are usually busy and it costs up to a fiver in there
gularscute 17-03-2007, 20:14 What's so great about Starbucks? There's nothing remarkable about the taste of their coffee and it's just another big chain that's part of the ongoing threat of identikit cities. You can get a better coffee from Blue moon, it's independant and has a relaxing, natural atmosphere.
evildrneil 17-03-2007, 20:37 That shows how far behind Leeds we are. Leeds has three Pret a Mangers, and they always seem to be packed.

I've only eaten at Pret a Manger once, and that was more than enough. :gag:

Havent read all the other threads, but am gutted to find that we had a pret and lost it. I lived in London for a while and became addicted to prets, they are pricey but you got what you paid for - free range/organic food etc. no additives.
Dont know what difference that makes but their sandwiches and coffee were orgasmic! We need one in the centre, no wonder it failed at meadow hall. They do the best quality sandwiches in the UK, for the price, rant, rave, etc. Lets campaign for a new one! There worth it, Sheffields worth it!:)
I've got a question.

Well, if you were a serious coffee drinker, you wouldn't say that. I think there is indeed a lack of decent baristas in general in the UK anyway. So oddly, maybe there isn't that much difference in what you do get from Starbucks. :(
I hate it when the people are given great machines and great ingredients to make a cup of coffee, but they spoil it by doing something wrong or don't respect it for what it is. :o

It is. It is ! Unfortunately, I don't think the market is there to spend an arm and leg for quality food. Cos people don't even believe in food up here! As long as you get fed, then this is okay. I wouldn't mind living somewhere like Brighton. Then again, the standard of living is pretty high there, so I can understand why people will spend more time eating out. It's very hard to actually have independent stores and shops here offering a middle region of quality food.
In actual fact, there had been a lot of coffee shops that had been and gone aroudn the city centre. I watched it decline over the years...I don't know whether it is the coffee which they offer, or that it is not of a high standard, or whatever.
NEKRO138 31-05-2007, 12:57 That shows how far behind Leeds we are. Leeds has three Pret a Mangers, and they always seem to be packed.
Yeah, it's the best way to judge a city, how many coffe shops they have. I'd rather have a cup of tea and a cheese sandwich.
ridz1700 11-08-2011, 12:43 Hi!
I was wondering where to get coffee oil for baking, here in Sheffield?
I just received a recipe from a friend whose mom makes the best coffee oil cookies i've ever tasted. obviously, the recipe calls for coffee oil.
I've tried searching on the web, but couldn't find it.
Am hoping that some of you coffee lovers would know where I can find it.
Thanks!
