I just wondered what everyone else thinks because every other 'major' city has got their own website like Derby, Liverpool and Leeds. I'd like to know why Sheffield hasn't got it's own site and instead we hav e to make do with South Yorkshire. It seems really silly whaen other cities have their own.

I guess its all to do with the way the BBC is organised locally. Radio Sheffield covers Donny etc, so I guess the website does that too.

i wondered about that too. The way i look at it, is that a few years ago the City of Bristol used to be in a county called Avon. But due to its expansion over the years and its controlling rule, it was decided to rename the county Bristol..........and when you leave South Gloucestershire, you are now met by a proud sign welcoming you to the City and County of Bristol.

Build more building, expand out a bit more towards Donny and Barnsley and then maybe we can rename South Yorkshire, the city and county of Sheffield.

That way - www.bbc.co.uk/sheffield will justify itself.

When I approached them about this, I was told that to name the website ...co.uk/sheffield would alienate towns like Doncaster. Furthermore, they reckon there isn't enough happening in the smaller towns to justify another website.

So, presumably, to reduce costs they'll be knocking the ...co.uk/leeds site on the head as they've already got a ...co.uk/westyorkshire and ...co.uk/manchester can be swallowed up by ...co.uk/lancashire.

Mmm, you know, call me a dry old cynic but that ain't gonna happen is it?

To be honest I get the feeling that the South Yorkshire website is basically a Sheffield website that just gives a token gesture acknowledgement of Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster, almost as if they are just some district of Sheffield.

For example look at the Greedy Cow section - about 99% of the pubs and eateries featured are in Sheffield...

And if you look at West Yorkshire, Leeds is not the only major town/city with lots going on in that county (there is Bradford next door for a start), and you could probably say the same about Greater Manchester/Lancashire.

So I think on this one I do not think the BBC is doing Sheffield any kind of disservice.

I couldn't agree more, the BBC in this area is, and always has been, dominated by news about West Yorkshire in general, and Leeds in particular. I don't see any hope of this being altered.

Its noticeable that Leeds and Bradford have their own websites, and they are next door to each other. I am sure there is lots of stuff going on in Rotherham, Barnsley and doncaster to merit a website each. It may not be on the same scale as that in leeds, but is just as interesting and relevant to the people living in those communities.

One other thing about the BBC and its relationship with Sheffield. Everyone remembers the World Student Games, after the Olympics, the largest multi sport event in the world. We're still paying for the fact that the BBC refused to cover it, prefering to cover the bowls from Eastbourne.
