View Full Version : Do Forumers Turn Their Collective Backs on Reality?
BoppinBruce 19-05-2005, 06:47 Over the past 4 weeks I have posted threads on diverse subjects e.g. Alcoholism, Self Abuse, Kids using Guns, Hoodies, Mental Health, Addictions etc. and I seem to find:-
Either the subject matter is not taken seriously or............
Nobody makes the choice to join the thread.
Do forumers really know what is going on in the city they live in? or are they not bothered?

I think people are bothered, but sometimes they just don't feel comfortable about discussing some issues on a public forum or - in the case of threads on self abuse or alcoholism etc - they don't feel they have any experience of the subject that would then allow them to contribute. From a personal standing, I wouldn't feel comfortable about contributing *too much* to threads on mental health etc because it would invariably lead to sharing my own experiences, and I'm not happy about doing that.
For what it is worth though, I think you have raised some very important issues over the last few weeks and just because they didn't get a response this time, it doesn't mean to say that no one will ever have something to say on those topics.

BoppinBruce 19-05-2005, 06:59 TracieJC,
Thank you for your reply and honesty.
msbehavin 19-05-2005, 07:04 I agree with Tracie there Bruce. I do also think that for some people, the Forum is a bit of a light-hearted relaxation, 'banter with people' exercise. I never used to get involved in the more heavyweight discussions until just recently as I figured I had enough stress and strife in my 'real' life without getting it on the internet too.
Your subjects are always interesting and refreshing amongst what is often a load of utter drivel. And yes, before anyone comes back at me, I admit that I too have typed a fair few meaningless posts in my Forum history, but I do try to entertain and make people smile.
You haven't PM'd me yet as to where I can come and get your new publications from. Let me know and we can meet up and have a chat - would be nice to meet yet another Forummer.
MsB
BoppinBruce 19-05-2005, 07:10 MsB, your mailbox is full that's why not lolol

Although this forum boasts 10,000+ registered people there are a comparative hardcore 'few' who post on here.
Some of whom are equivallent of the 2 kids in the class that have no knowledge & no valuable opinion but silence the rest of the class by bullying, scoffing and p**s taking.
These type unfortunately have never matured but still manage to rule group discussion.
AND I DONT MEAN Viking, MsB & Tracie, who's humour is classic but...
It is a waste of your time attempting to ellicit any sense on these topics on the Sheffield Forum.
The 'users' have neither the maturity, experience, political doctrine or empathy to be able to take part.
You would fare better googling for a specific health-care-related forum (and they do exist) for sensible discussion & advice, mate.
from observation
i have replied to a couple of your subjects boppinbruce and have avoided others as i did not feel comfortable answering certain things, this is more down to inexperience and i did not want to offend anyone on here. i must say i agree with Tracie and MsB's points.
you have raised good subjects and i enjoy reading the responses but it does get a bit tit for tat with some people on them and i know i can be guilty for that too and this can take the seriousness away from the subject.

Unfortunately i agree with this. By no means everyone but the names are becoming familiar in the short time i have been posting. I have tried contributing to serious topics only to have replies consistently sent ridiculing and twisting words so they can whip up some controvesy. It hasn't put me off but i do tend to steer clear of the more delicate subjects.
I think there are some folks who take the p**s here but there are also a fair number of people who do discuss these sorts of issues and engage with them online and offline.
Also, to be honest sometiems it's NICE to turn our backs on reality for a while - it's called relaxation. I'm as serious as the next man but sometimes I just want to take a dandelion break and take a rest from the world for a while.
And just take a look at what forummers are doing with their 'offline' time. They're organising charity events, blood donation drives, offering support to their fellow forummers, setting up interest groups. That's engaging with the world and reality.
