View Full Version : So Much For My Fantastic Diet
I'm trying to loose some weight.
Not eating anything after 8pm, and not drinking either.
Been doing really well, but it's only been 4 days.
Now I have just poured myself a massive glass of red wine and will no doubt be rummaging in the fridge within 5 minutes.
Why have I no willpower????:(
redrobbo 19-05-2005, 00:09 Because you are starving yourself! Exercise and healthy eating is the answer to weight loss. (Not that I pay any attention to this myself of course.......off to find a beer and something in the fridge right now!)
Well, at least I'm not alone.
Everytime I start a new diet I end up obsessing about it. I tell everyone I know that I'm dieting and how much weight I intend to loose. Then it doesn't happen and I end up looking like a looser
If you've been doing it for 4 days you've got will power. Don't be so hard on yourself!
Personally I go for distraction (cleaning or reading this forum works wonders) but when all else fails you have to allow yourself a bit of leeway. I bet you wouldn't be so hard on a friend who'd been trying what you've been trying & had a brief 'flip out'
Intrigued though (cos personally I prefer making changes I can stick to - life style ones I guess - rather than doing diets) do you intend to make the not eating after 8pm thing your 'norm' or is it just something you're trying out for a short time?
Thanks Sian, that is so nice of you to say! I shouldn't be so hard on myself!:)
Well, I have been told that you are more likely to store as fat anything eaten after 8pm.
I work shifts that often mean I'm home about 12.30am... I then log on here, pour some wine and pig out. Then I go and sleep on it. I'm convinced this is why I'm putting on the weight.
I totally take your point about making changes you can stick to. Why is it that habits that are bad for you (i.e cracking open the wine every night), are easier to keep than habits that are good for you(jogging in the park - (not that I've ever done that))?
Ah now - the reason why we eat (apart from when we are hungry of course ;) ) fascinates me. It's harder than you think to isolate what emotions trigger you to eat. Although tiredness & thirst are the easiest root causes of over eating. So with your shift work I'm not surprised you find it tough.
It took me years to work out that I (over) eat when I'm angry. That's harder to avoid than you'd think cos mostly I tell myself that I'm not angry at all. I've just learned over the years that if I find myself with my head in the fridge that something's upset me.
Food is a v emotional kind of thing but then so is hunting for clothes that fit if you've spent a month or two feeling v angry :P
It's very important to question our motivation, definitely!
My Grandma has always said to me,
'A moment on the lips; A life-time on the hips'
...whilst passing me a 4th lemon finger.
I know that the instant gratification of a big cheese and ham sandwich is nothing compared to the wonderful feeling you get when you can finally wear clothes you 'grew out of' once more.
Just the sandwich is a here and now thing, whereas the 'Team Slim' feeling is months away, and I could always be hit by a bus in the meantime...
redrobbo 19-05-2005, 01:01 I've just opened a bottle of beer reading Deavon's last post! My lad worries about my large tum. But I just lack motivation to lose weight. Stopped driving recently, and started walking - city centre and back every day. 10,000 steps routine. Even bought a pedometer. Not made a bit of difference, and so yesterday I got a bus pass!
I bought a pedometer as well. It broke when I sat on it on my first 10 000 steps challenge day.
I gave up shortly after that.

I lost mine! Fell off my waistband!
Hiya Deavon, i got the Dr Gillian McKeith book - you are what you eat. Been reading it (slowly) recently and it sounds really good stuff. I'm going to start gradually introducing some of her concepts into my everyday 'eating lifestyle' coz what she says really seems to make sense.
Basically, you don't starve yourself under her regime and you eat healthily which has the added bonus of losing weight.
You can borrow my book in return for walking my doggie for me (tee hee)! and that'll help you trim a bit of weight whilst having fun too! Don't suppose you live anywhere near Woodhouse do you? I can't walk my doggie as much as i would like at the moment so any help with exercising him (in return for giving you a good excuse to walk for miles) would be appreciated!!!

the problem is with the idea of "a diet" as something that you do until you've lost weight.
Your diet is what you eat. If you need to loose weight, don't "go on a diet", just change your diet. And don't change it by too much either.
Start off by reducing the amount of something that you know isn't very healthy and adding in more healthy options. And at the same time get out and do some exercise. A bit of exercise at least is key to loosing weight and looking a bit better.
My current weakness is bacon sarnies when I get to work. I don't have time for breakfast before I go, since i'm leaving at around 6:30, and i'm starving by the time I arrive at 8:30. I ought to find something to substitue for the sarnie, but i haven't yet.

Ah well, he'll get over it. ;)
Whatching what i eat during the day is very easy, but not eating after 8pm ??? thats worse than Chineese Water Torture.
Daarrrnnn! No response on my very generous offer of encouraging you to exercise by walking my (very cuddly, lovely, adorable) dowg :(
Back on thread: I lost nearly a stone now  but not really sure how?!
