Does anyone have any information about when the tramlines to Walkley were removed. We are currently in production of a book about the history of Walkley and any information about this would be greatfully received.

Ta goldenfleece 28-10-2003, 15:09 The last tram ran in 1956 from Walkley Tram Terminus from where trams ran to the town centre. The rails were not lifted, they were simply covered over later, possibly several years later in fact. I lived in Walkley in the 80's when they uncovered some tram tracks after digging up the road. This video has some footage of Walkley trams in op: http://films.kelkoo.co.uk/browse/b/150101/ps_OV490.html Scarrott 28-10-2003, 15:56 You're a star. Thanks for that! :) If anyone else has any information about the history of walkley i would be very grateful to hear it. The book is almost complete but we can still add any new info we receive, however small. We would even give a credit! Thanks goldenfleece 28-10-2003, 16:08 What have you got about the Walkley palladium out of interest. Scarrott 29-10-2003, 14:35 Not a great deal to be honest. Just a paragraph about when it was built and a photograph. Can you point me towards anything more? PopT 02-03-2004, 08:41 Have tou got any info about the painter Rossetti living in and painting in walkley? moggy6 02-03-2004, 19:04 Hi, I for one would be very interested in a copy of a book dedicated to Walkley. I lived on Providence Road for 29 years until I moved to a village in Lancashire in 1977. Most of Walkley in my early years are distant memories, I have very little in the way of Photo's as I was only young. I have lots of where I lived as my Father had a very large garden which was more like a farm as he had Pigs, chickens, rabbits and even a goat. I do remember the Palladium as I went there twice a week also all the well known shops have gone. Regards John.M foxy27 12-03-2004, 13:26 If you go along South rd towards town as the road starts to bend to the right, where the bus stop is there is an exposed tramline there sat in a pot hole. Darren 14-02-2005, 10:24 The Palladium is where Netto Supermarket now stands. We're all the current regulars at least 4 times a week! in the Rose House pub on South Road - any memories of it poppins 14-02-2005, 12:24 My sister in sheffield has a large painting in her home of a walkley tram on south rd, the trams making it's way up the hill, comming from weston park, it's a great picture. Ousetunes 14-02-2005, 12:39 I remember Barber Road being dug up to insert a sewer, gosh, when? ten years ago I reckon and the tram line was exposed in the process. This was at the junction of Bower Road and you can see where the road was relaid, it still looks quite new. Unfortunately, the engineers cut through the line in order to insert the new sewage pipe which I thought was sad. I find there's a strange romance in those old tram lines still lying buried beneath the road. poppins 14-02-2005, 12:48 Originally posted by Ousetunes Unfortunately, the engineers cut through the line in order to insert the new sewage pipe which I thought was sad.
