View Full Version : Problems with newly installed software graphics
Hi,
I've got two games where they program itself runs fine apart from (wait for it....)
The display is upside down! Ie the game appears like you'ev turned the monitor 180'
I've tried re-installing program but the problem persists. Does anyone know why this happens and a possible cure for it?
Thanks
Saifa
This is a new one on me Saifa :?
I did find this though:
Problem:
Every time the game loads it's upside down. What do i do?
Solution:
The capability to invert the display is a feature of the i845 chipset. Rotation is enabled by default and is activated by the default key combination down, hence why the display may rotate when playing certain games with the keyboard. If you are experiencing this problem, you can disable the rotate feature.
To disable the Rotate feature, right click the Intel Extreme Graphics icon on the taskbar, select Graphics Options, then Graphics Properties. Click on the rotation tab and remove the tick from the enable rotation box. Alternatively it can be accessed from Display Properties - Settings - Advanced - Intel Extreme Graphics - Graphics Properties.
Maybe worth a try
Thanks for the tip vidster - this was already disabled but I had a play with it - didn't seem to do owt.
I presume that something somewhere is telling the PC the display should be rotated. Interstingly, if you use the task manger or the windows key the screen rights itself before bringing up all the other windows icons, but then switches back to neck-ache view when you return to game.
I've just updated my graphics vard drivers but this has also had zero effect.
Any other ideas?

(sorry)
whats the game/setup you have there Saifa?
I have some pc's at work that let you set the screen upside down. Not sure if it's related but it's worth a go, the hot keys are ctrl+alt+ up or down arrows. This toggles the screen.
Thanks guys.
Hade - yes the hot key thing does work- though it confuses the program slightly . However I'm still curious as to why this is happening....
Phan, the two games are UFO Aftermath and Medieval Total War. I've got a 1.5 ghz P4, 512k RaM, 80 gig hard drive. Weakest link is graphics card - its the Intel 82845G Graphics Controller.
Does this leave any clues?
Seems to be a fair number of google hits for 82845G upside down (http://www.google.com/search?q=82845G+upside+down&sourceid=opera&num=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8)... The first result gives the solution vidster posted, the second gives some maybe useful shortcut keys?
Certain video chipsets can be set to display the entire screen upside-down when certain keystrokes are entered on the keyboard. The purpose appears to be to correct an issue in which changing the resolution of the screen causes the screen to invert. The keystrokes are either "CNTRL and ALT (turn off Num Lock) ANY ROW OF NUMBERS ON THE NUMBER PAD (123, 456 or 789)," or "CNTL-PGUP" or "CNTL-PGDN" or "CNTL-UPARROW" or "CNTL-DOWNARROW."
Not sure I've seen any games where you would have to hit control+alt+1+2+3 though :) Maybe the poor thing is just getting very confused... Have you tried new drivers etc? (or just buying a decent graphics card? ;))
Yeah getting a better graphics card had crossed my mind - how much should i be paying for a relatively up to date one (crosses fingers no-one says over about 70 quid)?
Oh aye and my motherboard doesn't have a PCI slot so it has got to be AGB compatible. I think. It might be the other way round tho... I was listening when my mate was looking at it honest!! I'm just a bit dim when it comes to computers.
You should be able to get something respectable without paying the earth, and certainly for £50-70. I can never be bothered keeping up to date with the nvidia/ati chipsets, so if someone asks me for recommendations I always suggest just starting with a price and seeing what you can get for it! Maybe a 5200FX at the cheaper end (from as little as £25), a 6200 for about £60 or a 6800 for about £80 - all Geforce chipsets found on dabs. This all assumes you can run the current AGP 4x cards - should be ok if the rest of your system can keep up with the sort of games that need a graphics card like that!
davididreal 30-05-2005, 19:24 I can not believe that no one has sugested the (almost) free answer to your problem.
Simply acquire some cardboard, pva glue, a few drawing pins, rubberbands, oh and an empty washing up liquid bottle.
Then......
Visit the Blue Peter website and in the search bar type "monitor stand" Print these instructions off taking care to mark them as they come off the printer with "top" and "bottom"
Now the really important and clever bit you must remember to put the word "top" at the bottom and "bottom" at the top of each page. Then follow the instructions ensuring you start at the bottom which is now marked "top" to construct your new improved monitor stand.
Finally - turn your monitor yupside down and attach it to your newly built monitor stand - Hey Presto Problem well and truly solved !
