Hi all!
Well I've just recently moved to Sheffield and as you could probably guess I'd like to get involved with the gay scene and what's happeneing in Sheffield, so I thought this would be great to find out! Are there many pubs or clubs here suited to the gay scene? We seem to be discriminated against in so many cities, especially Norwich where I hail from. I'd love to find out more, hope to hear your replies - what about you Richard Moderator do you know any gay bars?

Thanks all - Nancy XXX

There's one near the Train station called The Cossak which is a gay bar. Other than that I dont know of any. I do know of a Sheffield Student's Union club night, once a month on a Friday they run Climax, a gay/bi/lesbian night. The Union has quite an "in your face" LGB group who I guess will help you and will certainly know more than I do. Their web page is http://usitweb.shef.ac.uk/~lgb/ In fact I notice a link near the bottom of the page which looks like it could be very helpful to you.

Aled Jones, a BA from the Radio 1 Chris Moyles show is in Sheffield quite a lot, you could try asking him, he can be contacted via the chrismoyles.net messageboard (http://pod-135.dolphin-server.co.uk/~chris/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2314).
He is gay before you ask.

Freedom (near John Lewis/Cole Brothers) is a gay club and Dempseys at the end of The Moor. Alternatively you can check the Sheffield Telegraph (comes out on Friday's - no pun intended  ) for what's on.

Where is that now. Since it moved from the Charles St building. Thought it had just closed down.

Ooh not sure. I got this info from a friend who goes out with her gay mate. I need to check my information!

Dempseys is 'gay'? i thought it was were you could get a drink if you were underage!

To the best of my knowledge a friend was at Dempseys last Friday, so it's probably safe to assume it's still there. From what he said I gather it is part of the gay scene.

Problem is, it might be a bit of a dodgy area to send someone new to the city...

When are you coming out of the closet? (I mean to join the forum board full as a member of course! Doh!:o )

Maybe Norwich discriminates because they all listen to Alan Partridge and his early morning breakfast show?

The gay scene in Sheffield is pretty poor. The best place in town in Dempseys, which has a nightclub at night and is open till 2am every day. The place is really friendly and where most of the gay scene seems to go. The Cossak is next in town, but its small and looks seedy, but gay and friendly all the same. There is Club Excess and Ma Bakers on Carlise Street, bit of a way to get to, but good for the weekend. Club Excess doesnt shut till 3/4am at wkend either but doesnt sell alcohol after 2am. Climax is held every month at the Union building nr the Childrens Hospital, its fun and very big. Fairy is every month too, thats very big as its held at the city hall ballroom. Only one bar though and a bit expensive. Dabble is a new night held at The leadmill which i have heard to be excellent. And once in a while The Leadmill holds Poptastic.

<gasping for breath> so there you go, info for the gay scene from someone on the gayscene.

I used to go on the scene all the time. I was always at Climax or Pink Glove or Poptastic or Planet (ugh!).

I also used to go to the Cossack a lot, especially on Thursdays when karaoke was quite an experience!

Nowadays I feel too old and boring for scene stuff. What's going on with lgb groups nowadays? Are there any? Like there used to be an LB women's group at the Women's Cultural Club but I think that's closed down now. Anyone got any ideas?

Cheers

Polysexual at the forum on Saturday nights.

City Hall also hold a gay night once a month, but I forget the name.

I'll edit this post when I find out.

I have to say the only decent night worth going to at the moment is the night at the leadmill dabble and poptastic its a real laugh its the only night I have actually enjoyed in sheffield for ages. Not keen on fairy liquid its a bit cheesy and the djing isn't very good.
Climax is ok, the bars are a bit rubbish its a shame they seem to be stuck in a bit of a timewarp. We generally go over to Leeds or manchester for nights out other than the dabble poptastic night which is only once a month but at least its something to look forward to, even though its a sunday night. Its worth feeling rough on monday for just to have a decent night out in sheffield.

Please please someone help. I really want to contact an old mate who is gay and now living in Sheffield. His name is Dazz (or Derryn) Overton.

I'm so upset to have lost contact with him, if you know him or any contact details please, please send me them.

I want to contact him by surprise - would be so nice.

(I believe at one point, maybe still ??, he had links to the Meadowhall).

If you have any idea please email me at dageeza@yahoo.com

Cheers

Polysexual was not a gay night per se, rather just 'gay-friendly'. I used to go in the summer and had some *fabulous* nights there. However it doesn't feel very gay, it's just like a normal night in the Forum with 4 or 5 guys dressed in drag! It's now been renamed to 'Metrosexual' and on my last couple of visits have found it a bit dull and feeling even less gay than it felt before. DJ Little Anthony is still spinning the tunes which I love, but something's missing...

Well, you gays are never satisfied,I remember when you only had the cossack now you have numerous bars and your still not happy?

Come on Roy, try a little tolerance and fun, you might even enjoy it! I'm extremely straight (although I have been accused of dancing in a somewhat camp fashion on many an occasion) but Poly/Metro Sexual used to be a unabashed great night out (lots of attractive young ladies there too..). Who gives a **** about the sexuality, race, clothing habits, or music tastes of people as long they know how to have a good time...

and what the hell is wrong with that? If someone wants to open a bar that caters to gay tastes then why shouldn't they? It's their business not yours.

So you support the BNP and are homophobic - did you bang your head as a child by any chance?

Folks, I just though I'd revive an old and obviously dormant thread, but to say the following: Since there are a considerable number of Lesbian/Gay/Bi/Trans people who use the Forum, wouldn't it make more sense to have a seperate LGBT Forum Section?

This was looked into, but then this came along :

http://www.queersheffield.com

they have a Forum there with details of whats happening, etc etc, and its easier to MOD as well.

Plus now spreading out fo Sheffield and covering cities near to Sheffield as well.

The thread is here : http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=134588

I agree that the idea of an LGBT group is a good one, and several of us have chatted about it already.

We need to make sure there are enough people interested before we bother suggesting it and come up with ideas for content. There are plenty of threads already.

If you do decide to go ahead dear then I have got the questions asked by Geoff if you want them, to prepare yourself and the answers.
