View Full Version : Life is Not all Ha Ha Hee Hee and the self abuser
BoppinBruce 18-05-2005, 17:11 In the, what I think is a wonderful series 'Life is Not All Ha Ha Hee Hee' we have a self abuser
My first question is-
Should this be shown on tv, albeit after the watershed? (As it is an adult that is self abusing)
and my second question is-
If there were a self abuser in your family, what would you do and where would you go for help?
And of cos the third question is-
Does television reflect society or does society reflect elevision?

I don't think there is anything wrong with this being shown on TV at a suitable time - self abuse is, unfortunately, a very real occurrence :(

Both, all art mirrors life and all life mirrors art. It's a beautiful circle.
I'd take a self-abuser in my family to a gp...looking for a referral to a counsellor...HTH

Sometimes the self-abuser may not want help or may refuse. I speak from personal experience and it took me 10 years to admit I had a problem and that it needed to be dealt with.
But i guess that it depends on the person as to whether or not they listen to friends or family. I wish I had listened, then problems and issues could have been dealt with earlier.
Yodameister 19-05-2005, 18:33 Am I wrong, but is the term not "self-harm"?
I'm sure "self abuse" means something quite different.

When I first read the original post, having not seen the tv program in question, I thought that's a bit harsh, surely it's not a big deal 'having relations with ones self' :o Then the penny dropped.

I tend to use the term 'self-harm' rather than 'Self-abuse'
i think it is good to educate people on "self Harm" i have seen many friends with it and supported them through it, its an ongoing thing that they have to deal with every day even if they do mange to supress the feelings they can always come back. some people frown upon them and think they are nutters which is not the case, to them it is a form of release,..

LOL:P sorry . . . this just made me chuckle. I was wondering why self abuse is being spoken of as a bad thing - I thought it was kinda healthy.:P

I've heard rumours of eyesight issues!!
Jennie80 13-06-2005, 18:08 I think for some people self-harm is a necessary release of some emotion that they can't otherwise deal with. Perhaps it has it's place for some people (such as drinking in moderation, smoking etc).
I know it's controversial but I've heard of places where people can go to safely 'cut' given sterile equipment, and so on.
Underlying issues that require self harm need to be addressed tho and the GP is the gate keeper to any mental health referrals.
