Hi guys im a newbie today, just wondered if you could help me out, me and a guy from work have a dispute over the tunnels that are supposed to run from varies places ie; castle market, queens head, carbrook hall etc.. he says they are a myth and no tunnels were ever completed. I seem to recall they do exist and they was cleared out about 10 years ago, does anyone have any true facts, maps or websites i could get more info??

Thnx in advance !!

Hi xpaddyxuk and welcome to the forum:wave:

I remember reading a similar thread not long back - it's called Tunnels under sheffield started by Jon. Try using the search facility to bring it up. - I'm sorry I'm not sure how to post a link to the thread but someone will come along and tell us:thumbsup:

Hope this helps :)

there are tunnels beneath castle market which were meant to link with the castle from mary queen of scots incarceration there. however as the landscape has changed considerably since then it is hard to imagine.there used to be "trips" or viewings when i was a tad younger but i think they have now ceased.there is an excellent book on sheffield by by a guy called "Vickers" which goes into more detail.

a friend of mine used to work at the casbah and discovered a tunnel underneath in the cellar...didn't dare investigate very far though but it seemed to go on a bit...

Someone who used to work on projects at the manor stated that a tunnel run from the castle to the centre. Unsure of any others around.

Although everyone talks about them i've never heard of anyone walking the tunnels. Unsure whether this is due to safety or whether they are closed??

:o Wow! I'm not from Sheffield though lived here for nigh on 10 or 11 years now. I'm fascinated by all this talk of tunnels - especially as they seem to date back so long.

Let us know what you find out. Wouldn't it be great to go on a 'tunnel walk' Hmmmm might need a stiff brandy first tho!

This is a really fascinating subject, look forward to hearing more ....

I have lived in Sheffield all my life and heard that the tunnel from the Manor Castle Lodge where Mary Queen of Scots was held captive the tunnels I think was for her to move about freely between the city centre and the lodge anyway the tunnel from the lodge was supposed to have been investigated and followed was found to have been bricked up but a sword and sheild was said to have been found...

One of the old landlords of the millhouses use'd to take people down there after time was called. would luve to go and explore them. if anybody knows of a way to get down there, plz let me no.

Erm, I find it hard to believe these apparent tunnels are still there after all these years especially as the landscape has changed dramatically and lots of buildings with deep foundations have been built in the area since.

I would have thought if there were tunnels then there would be something official stating that fact like a website or the Sheffield University Archeology society etc. Until I see something official then I'm just putting down the idea of tunnels as fantasy.
