View Full Version : Has anybody got their nose pierced?
Jillybabes 18-05-2005, 14:03 Just wanted to know this cos I've been thinking about getting mine done for a while. Does it hurt? Has anybody got any other piercings, I have got belly button done and that hurt like hell but worth it cos it looks cool.
I had my nose done ages ago with the ear gun..and that side of my face went numb for the afternoon.
I found it to be a nuisence..and anyone who has had it done would agree with me.
I also have got my Tragus pierced..that hurt after it was done..but diddnt hurt being done. It swelled up afterwards..but i was pulling my bike helmet off and on all the time..!:o
More than ears.
the problem is afterwards when you constantly have something inside your nose. I wear the bent earing style studs, and if the tailis too long and it turns round it stabs you in the most sensitive part in the back of your nose
Whilst they are healing they are particularly prone to infection, especially if you get a cold
They heal up quicker than any other hole too, so if you have it out for an hour you can find it's a struggle to get the stud back in
Clockedit 18-05-2005, 14:11 I had my bits and pieces pierced 3 weeks ago and i'm still in agony!

i got my navel done years ago which ripped out when got caught in a pair of jeans (the scar looked lurrrvly when i was pregnant! not!!!) and i got my tongue done 6 years ago and its till good:D i have heard bad things about the nose tho:gag:
Jillybabes 18-05-2005, 14:15 Ouch, sounds painful I think im getting second thoughts. It does look nice (the nose) when its got a nice little stud in it but is it worth it?

So long as you know how to look after it, it is fine.
I make sure I always have a spare for when I lose one though.
When you get past the stud you're done with, don't get the glued stones, they always fall out pretty quickly, get a claw setting. Although they tend to get caught in the towel every morning, so I have to pick them out of the bathmat all the time ;)
And they catch on other peoples noses when you're snogging :suspect:

hurts like hell, but only briefly.. i've had my eyebrow pierced 3 times, my nose twice and my tongue done (only one left in is the tongue; i'm a responsible adult now!).. nose is without a doubt the most painful i've had.. it's not excrutiating, don't get me wrong, but be prepared for a bit of teeth gritting and a lot of tears (not because you'll be crying, just because your eyes will gush the same was as when you bump your nose, only more so)..
do not under any circumstances have it pierced with a gun!! piercing guns are bad news, any professional piercer will tell you.. they are far from sterile, and work on the principal of forcing a blunt object through flesh, which causes bruising and trauma..
get it done in a good piercing place, with a needle.. you will have a much wider choice of jewellry as well..
be sure to upload a picture of the final result if you get it done :)

But mine was done with a gun at toxic shock in birmingham. Mr Strix had the top of his ear 'needled' at the same time. Difference is, the numbing stuff they put on before the needling is done.
i had my nose peirced some years ago with a ear gun, i could not beleive the pain i jumped up and neally decked the woman, good job my mam was with me. she was laughing callin me all the wusses under the sun. i couldnt see for tears streaming. it was about 10 mins before we realised why i was in such agony the stud had gone straight thru that middle bit of my nose
**ouch**

i once launched a firework rocket from my hand when i was (much) younger.. didn't do me any harm that time but i certainly wouldn't recommend anyone else try that method!
as in, using a piercing gun may work ok some times, but it is far from ideal and frowned upon by piercing experts.. if there are better/cleaner/more versatile solutions available, why not use them?
i had all my piercings done in brum as well, a little place on the top floor of the Oasis indoor market thingy.. oh, apart from my first ever eyebrow piercing, which was in a tent at a music festival when i was 17 (and here's me lecturing on piercing sanitation lol)..
thomsongirl 18-05-2005, 14:43 I had my nose pieced. Twice on one side and once on one side. I loved it. I kept getting infections, despite cleaning it and stuff, the infection just wouldn't go. So I let them all heal up. I also had to take my ear ones out at the sametime, as they were playing up and now I can't wear any earrings either (6 in one ear, 4 in the other). You can't see the holes in my nose, unlike my ears so that's one good thing.
Would love to have my nose done again.
Forgot to say - I didn't think it hurt as much as my ear.
Okay, but I forgot to say Toxic Shock were renowned as the best at the time. It was a professional piercer who did mine.
I wouldn't trust anybody at Claire's Accessories with the same piece of equipment near my nose :suspect:
I got mine pierced about 7 years ago now - I still like it, my dad still hates it. It was done with an ear gun and hurt a bit of the time but it cleared up fairly soon i think. Hasn't ever become infected. I've heard that it's better to have it done with a needle than an ear gun as it's pierced better (or something - i know there was a reason but can't remember what it was).
I wear a really tiny silver stud in it - i do like the ones with diamante in but i tend to lose the jewels - apparently they stay in better if you don't where them in the swimming pool or shower (too much faff) saying that some have stayed in for ages. I do tend to lose a lot of studs, so always have a spare but they only cost a quid so I don't really mind.
mjlacey21 18-05-2005, 15:06 On top of the tissue trauma they cause the main reason that piercing guns should not be used is nothting to do with aesthetics. They contain plastic and can therefore not be put in an autoclave and sterilised. Alcohol and antibacterial wipes may remove surfice bacteria but I believe it is hepatitus A bacteria that has some type of armour shell or something and therefore cannot be killed by heat alone, the pressure in an autoclave is required to crack the shell so it can be killed.
It can survive for years and from what I remember can take decades to show any symptons.
Basically anyone that has used the same piercing gun as you could be a carrier and have infected everybody else that it is used on.

I had mine done a few years ago in Wales. The person doing it was very anti gun method. (i had this done before and it became infected and healed). He explained that using a gun actually tears the inside of your nose and doesn't heal well at all. He used a needle which leaves a clean exit inside. He then gave me some tea tree spray to apply rather than wipe it.
I then went to an asian jewellers and bought a 22ct stud which screws in and I have never taken it out or lost it. I have used nose wires before which hang down like a "bogey" and easily get lost while you sleep.
I would reccomend that you pay a little extra and have it done with a needle. The pain was minimal compaired to a gun where the pain lasts longer and throbs!
It cost me £25 but was worth it as I have never had trouble with it and forget it is there.

best thing for a piercing imo (or any minor skin abrasion/laceration)..
piercing studios will always advise you against using TCP or any other form of antiseptic, favouring saline solution of something similar.. i ignored all their advice and used TCP anyway, and can confirm that it does more harm than good.. your skin cannot heal properly if you keep wiping away all the white blood cells and sterilising the hell out of it!
a little diluted tea tree oil, however, works wonders.. on spots as well.. it's a little miracle worker!
I had my nose pierced about 3 years ago and it was alright at the time but just dead sensitive for a few weeks afterwards. It was done with a needle-I cannot imagine the pain if it was done with a gun that just sounds wrong! And my stud hasn't come out for about two and a half years, I've got one that's just a tiny straight bar with a tiny ball on each end. You just have to kind of shove it through which is why it's not come out for so long-it just can't! If I ever want to take it out I'll have to cut the end of the bar I think. But I never catch it on anything, it's definitely the best sort of stud I've tried so get one if you can, it's really subtle and hasn't given me any problems getting jobs or anything!
Just go for it I think nose piercings are pretty cute!
mjlacey21 18-05-2005, 15:13 Tea tree oil is a bit harsh for it just used warm boiled water with sea salt in. Dont use table salt because it contains iodine as an anti-caking agent which slows healing.

It wasn't soley tea tree oil, it was a natural solution with other ingredients, very mild.
Plain Talker 18-05-2005, 16:18 I have had mine done, and it was with an ear- piercing gun.
I had it done about five years ago, now, I had been wanting it done for ages.
It does make your eyes water for a bit, and I warn you, it may eill make you jump.
It wasn't as painful as I thought it would be (I also have my ears pierced twice, and I have 2 tattoos on my back... so I am not a "wuss".) As someone said, it sort of "takes you aback" for a split second, like being thumped in the nose.
a funny back-story about me getting my nose done...
My lad (who was 19 at the time) threatened me that he was going to disown me, if I had it done. (the cheek!)
He hates facial piercings, and even refuses to let his other half wear her nose piercing jewellery. (now, this is the lad who had a nipple piercing!!! - which went septic!)
I told the woman who did my nose piercing what my lad had said, when I went for it to be done.
Her response was the same as mine
"Well, THAT'S as good a reason as any to GET it done!"
I said "Prescisely!!!!! ;) that's why I'm here!" :D
My thoughts on it are that, if I had been dragging him along, and forcing him to have his nose pierced, that'd be a different matter... However, it's *my* body, *my* choice of body mods (modifications) in my tatts, and in my piercings, so what i choose to have done, or not done, is MY business!
PT
The nostril is pretty much painless. Its the septum that hurts.
My nose piercing hurt loads more than my septum! :)
noseyrosie 18-05-2005, 17:31 I would recommend Feline at Hunters Bar for noses. I had mine done about 4 years ago with a needle, and it hurt at the time -stingy, but not after.
They use an amazing stud with sort of u bend in it that it is very hard to pull out. (Also very hard to reinsert while it is healing, so DONT remove it)
All other designs seem to drop out. I don't like rings as they tickle.
I got a cold a week after I had mine done, and did get an infection. It was very gunky for months, but didn't really hurt much.
I would say you have to be pretty dedicated to looking after a nose piercing. They do get infected very easily.
melody on 18-05-2005, 17:35 Hmm naughty noseyrosey didn't log out from my computer, so that was me with that last post. I would have been a bit shocked if she got her nose done 4 years ago as she would have been 14.
hi had mine done 4 years ago when i was cough ,cough, years old,its been fine and i hate pain,go for it
Had mine done earlier this year at feline tattoo (excellent place to go. Very professional) with a needle. Made your eyes water, but wasn't anywhere near as painful as people said.
And not even a quarter of the pain of getting my nose reset, after someone broke it (the breaking didn't hurt a bit, just the reset)
Was a bit of a bugger keeping clean for a while, but mild saline solution works great.
Go for it, get it done, you know it makes sense.
I had mine done at Feline too. Jayne nose her knowses (or something).
Cutglass 19-05-2005, 08:11 Had mine done 20 years ago with an ear-piercing gun. Yeah it does make you jump and your eyes may get a bit teary, but I've never had any problems with mine.
I'm now at the stage where I can leave it out for a few weeks and still put a stud in quite easily when I feel like it.
If you want it done, go for it
Jillybabes 19-05-2005, 10:37 You know what, I have totally changed my mind after reading some of your posts. I'm prone to infections so I dont think it would be worth it. A friend of mine had it done and her nose looked like she'd been hit for ages. I know people are different when it comes to this sort of thing and I think I would be one of those who gets infected. When I got my bellybutton done it was fine for ages and then I went away the following year and came back after going in the sea and it was infected a year after getting it done can you believe it, thought I was going to have to remove it altogether but it healed nicely and had no problems since.
i had mine done 5ys ago,but i had to take it out as my nose was too soft for the stud that the stud came out the other end of my nostril.now u can tell i once had it done with the scar as never heald.
i had other body parts piereced but with a needle and not with a gun,and its a lot better.once had my top ear done same time as my nose with the gun,and it left a hard lump behind my ear now.
i never ever have a piercing ever again with a gun.
badhairdo 22-07-2005, 23:57 Guns should ONLY be used on earlobes, if at all. Personally Id like to see 'em all collected and melted and never to be seen again.
Infection in piercings is uncommon. Most people mistake irritation for infection. Irritation is caused by catching, knocking, changing the jewellery too soon, having the wrong jewellery in to start with.
Go to a body piercer and have a needle piercing done, and a titanium stud or ring fitted, clean it with saline twice a day with tissue not cotton wool and dont remove the jewellery for about 4 months and theres no reason why you wouldnt have a nicely healed piercing 6 months from now.
Pain-wise, it is a notoriously painful piercing and it will make your eyes water, but only for a split second. Needle piercings are quick and less painful than guns. My advice - go for it!

Mr Strix had his ear top done with a needle when I got my nose done. He was convinced his ear had healed, even though I said it wouldn't have yet, and he stopped applying the surgical spirit to it twice a day.
Then I noticed it didn't look square through his ear any more, and closer inspection revealed a large puss-filled lump behind his ear adjacent to the piercing :gag:
It has now healed with a lump of scar tissue forcing the piercing slightly crooked
My nose is fine though :D
