I've got a place at Uni to become a Midwife, but recently I have started to doubt my ability to do the job, because of my IBS. Just as I think I have it under control, it rears its ugly head again and I can be house bound for 2-3 days at a time.

Should I really be doing this? I know if it was me I wouldn't want someone so unreliable to be treating me in labour, especially when I have to dash off to the loo 3-4 times in any 20 minute space

Youre having a crisis of confidence thats all! We all go through similar things at times like this and its perfectly natural.

Go for it, gal, Youll be great!

Yeah but you have to get around these things. Do they know about it?

If they do they might be able to give you some lee-way.

Dont let it wreck your life. fight against it.

They know about the IBS, but not how badly it has come to affect me now.

Tell them, I bet youll be pleasantly surprised by their response. Theyll bend over backwards for you and youll be glad they did one day.

Youre gonna make a wonderful midwife!

My thought is you never know till you've tried. I went to Uni not knowing if I would cope as I have Chronic M.E. I decided to give it 2 months as I couldn't see it hurting to try. I stayed the course and I went on to do a post graduate degree. Better than staying at home and wondering if you should have.

Peaches i have ME it doesn't effect my going to work , i manage the condition well.
I know you can get there, You will be a fantastic Midwife don't give up your hopes and dreams, I know you can do this. I believe you will be great. i know you do a fantastic job with your Guinea pigs and you will in this.
Just breath and have confidence , try to forget about the nerves

Hi Liz, you can do it if you want it bad enough. I think you're just suffering from nerves at the moment. Have confidence and believe in yourself. Give it a go and see how you get on ,if not you'll always be wondering whether or not you could have done it.
I understand why you're worried. I have ME and it knocks my confidence as I don't know from one day to the next how I'll be feeling but I've learnt to listen to my body and whenever possible do what it's telling me. It's impossible to do this all the time when you've got a family but you have to try and be sensible.

Believe in yourself and you'll succeed.
Good luck
Helen

Hi Peaches,

I would love to become a midwife but don't think that I can because of my health (fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue). Go for it is what I would say.

Also, I once spoke to a nurse who was crippled by IBS, she told me that she takes aloe vera juice every day and had not had any problems with it for 2 years !! It might not work for everyone but worth a try ?

Good luck, don't look back and regret not doing it !!

Only just found this thread.

Get a grip woman, you'll be fine. As dear Mr Wocky said, it's just an attack of nerves. If it wasn't the IBS, you'd probably be wondering if you were too young/too old/too stupid/too tall/too short/too blonde, etc, etc, to do the job!

This sort of self-doubt hits most of us at one time or another, especially when we're learning something new. Last course I did was on a database - I went home after the first day mumbling I'd never get the hang of it 'cos I was too stupid! But I ended up certified, despite my doubts. :hihi:

aww you'll be fine. I always think if someone genuinely wants to make a career of something they will be far better at it than someone who is just in it for the money or whatever - this seems especially true of nursing! Good luck both of you!
