one of my mates has just commented that "sheffield isn't that much bigger than stafford," (my home town).. they are clearly wrong, as stafford is a tiny little inbred town which you could walk across in about an hour and a half..

however, being a geek (a smug one, at that) i want to corroborate this with cold hard facts.. i've done a quick google, but to no avail.. anyone know how big sheffield is in square miles? or how to go about finding out? obviously, an approximation is fine..

although i guess this information would be useless without knowing the equivalent area for stafford..

any help appreciated..

I was once told it was 17 or 19 miles long and approx 14 miles wide.
Not sure if that's true though.

Edit: Just looked on map quest for the northernmost postcode I know and the sourthern most and came up with a distance of 17.9 miles but there's probably a little more because I don't know the far extremes.
Sheffield map looks like it's more than 14 side though, probably 17 wide ish.

It's very roughly 100 square kilometres.

I had some computer tool to 'draw' around the outskirts of a city and it gave you the total area, but can't remember which it was.

It's hard to compare the two really as Sheffield takes in a lot of outlying areas.

Sheffield: 367.94kmē
Stafford (District): 598.17Kmē

Source (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_English_districts_by_area)

Although, as Stafford is a town and Sheffield is a city, I would imagine these figures are somewhat skewed, depending on exactly what they are including within each.

Sheffield is clearly bigger based on population though:

Sheffield: 512,507
Stafford: 121,888

My figures are similiar to sniperwookie. Last estimates were 2003:-

Total Population 512,500
Children 0-17 107,800
Working Age 308,400
Retirement Age 96,300

Notes:
Working age is 18-64 for men and 18-59 for women

jesus, so according to these sources sheffield is about 65% the size of stafford but has more than 4 times the population?? or is it comparing sheffield city centre to stafford and all it's cuffy little outlying villages (bednall, gnosall, etc.) which aren't really part of stafford, they just happen to be near it?

Talking of populations, the number of students should be considered too.

What are we talking 50,000 or so? i.e. 1 in 10 of Sheffield's population.

Doesn't seem right somehow, i was surprised when i first heard the official population of Sheffield. When you consider all the districts you would think it would be much higher.

The figures quoted in the other posts include students - approximately 45000.
