What are people's opinions on either of these games or both of them? I will be ordering one of them this weekend and while I have always preferred PES a lot of the reviews are saying FIFA is better.

Im looking more for people opinions on the actual gameplay rather than the presentation etc. - FIFA's licensed leagues are a good thing but ive always felt that PES gameplay was better and this has swayed me as I tire of FIFA's gameplay far quicker.

My husband prefers PES and always has done. Younger kids tend to prefer FIFA because of the actual names of the teams and players etc... Gameplay has always been better on PES.

PES09 is awful, played the demo, the gameplay on PES has not improved for a few years now, the players move like robots, I have FIFA 09 and the gameplay has improved a lot and it will easily outsell PES 09, FIFA has keeps improving while PES 09 is still the same, it's gone backwards if anything.

Since I started playing PES I haven't been able to get into a FIFA game properly. The players and leagues are better but at the end of the day they don't make up for the gameplay.

I wanted to check what people thought before I bought as the reviews seem to lean towards FIFA. However reviews often don't match my experience of a game.

It's always seemed the other way round to me. The players and passing on FIFA have always seemed very mechanical and not 'free' and the gameplay somewhat 'scripted'. PES has always given the feel that you have more freedom and each attack would seem different and not like you were doing the same thing.

I have FIFA 09 and the gameplay has improved a lot and it will easily outsell PES 09, FIFA has keeps improving while PES 09 is still the same, it's gone backwards if anything.

Would you say the gameplay on FIFA 09 is better than PES 09 then? I don't mean which game has improved more from the previous incarnation, I just mean these 2 games against each other.

I haven't played the new ones but I never could get on with FIFA games. PES is just a lot more satisfying to play.

I've played on both games, bought PES 2009 today and I must admit PES is much better to play. It's a lot quicker and more like an actual arcade game, which football games should be. FIFA to me seems so slow and labored, it will always win out in the graphics stakes but who's bothered about some posh looking menus. And as for the made up names on PES, it's always been like this and always will, this argument is a non-starter for me.

I've always been a PES fan and always hated FIFA but PES08 was absolutely awful. I got it on PS2 and didn't like it at all. Then I got a PS3 and got FIFA08. Wow, what a game. Absolutely brilliant.

At the minute I haven't got FIFA09 or PES09 but based on last year, I'm going to get FIFA, not certain yet though so opinions would be appreciated.

I have a PS3 and had last years FIFA but thought it was basically the same old game with a few refinements. The passing still felt 'forced' and the gameplay still felt less fluid than the PES games for me. I defo won't be getting FIFA 09 unless there are major improvements in gameplay - the reviews are saying it's great but not enough for me.

I really need to find someone who has the games so that I can compare them but they are new and I want one NOW to play myself - im not getting both.

It is far better to have real names and real tournaments especially when FIFA has about 30 real leagues and a more realistic transfer system as well. I wouldn't buy the game just on this but it is far far better to have than not.

Well I had both FIFA08 and PES08 and IMO, FIFA is a much, much better game. Thats a view shared by many, many people on the PES fansite aswell. The general view on there is that PES08 is utter tosh and FIFA08 is awesome. A view I wholehearedly agree with. I definitely won't be buying PES09 unless I hear some very good reviews for it.

If it hadn't been for the fact that MotoGP 08 is out at the end of the month then I would already have FIFA09.

It's a personal opinion and I respect anyone's choice of which game to buy. If anyone recommends FIFA 09 based on FIFA 08 then I am not going to get it 'cos I didn't really like the 08 game.

I didn't play last years PES as I too heard it was rubbish and FIFA came out earlier so I got that.

I've always loved PES, basically due to the fact that it was more difficult, FIFA has always been a game where you can just pick the ball up, run through everyone, and score, to the extent where you won every game 18-0.

I wasn't at all happy with PES08 though and then when I got my PS3, I heard that that version of PES08 was even worse than that PS2 version so decided to get FIFA, I'm extremely glad I did. I'm now in the position though where I don't know whether to stick with FIFA or go back to PES!!!

PES was the king, and has become complacent. The amount FIFA has improved in the last 2 years is indescribable. It is completely different to how it used to be, where PES was the proper hardcore game whereas FIFA was the arcade-y highlights package. FIFA is now painfully realistic football. You have to work the ball, hold it up, watch for runs and constantly plan ahead trying to find the split-second to break, it's all about slow pace and patience, whereas PES is the complete opposite, ridiculously fast, you can sprint the length of the pitch in five seconds and routinely score 35 yard goals on any difficulty, as it's still fundamentally a PS2 game with a (not very good) lick of paint, a lot of it is on rails and as such it's easily exploitable. I made the switch last year and haven't looked back for a second. The PES 09 demo only went to show me how right I was.

From experiences I've had talking to people, the only people still playing PES are those who have done so obsessively for 10 years and are too stubborn to switch, start from scratch and lose all their skills. A lot of them say they try the FIFA demo and hate it. Simple reason, they're playing it like it's PES. It isn't. If you play FIFA as though it's on speed and going at a thousand miles an hour you'll just run into endless brick walls, that's not how FIFA works. To enjoy FIFA you need to forget everything you ever learnt in PES. If you can do that, you'll discover the beauty of the best football game ever by a massive margin. If you want the best football game, get FIFA. If you want the best PES, which is what PES fans seem to think football means which presumably means they've never actually seen a game of football outside a Sunday league match that finished 65-23, then don't.

Yes, I agree with this. I am only really decent at games but even I could easily master the FIFA games whereas as PES has always been more of a challenge.

For me FIFA 09 needs to be a big improvement on FIFA 08 for me to consider buying it. Even if PES 09 is still only a slight improvement on the last PS2 version then I would still rather get that - although I wouldn't pay £40. Just my opinion though.

I'm a lifelong PES fan ... right back from the days of iss on the snes. I have had every version and even the winning 11 series (jap version) but ever since pes5 the game has been getting worse and the next gen versions are really struggling.

PES 2008 was an absolute joke ... the game was poor and the online mode was completely shagged !!! (i only played it for a week and then i sold it)

There were alot of promises by KONAMI about how much of an improvement PES 2009 would be. Unfortunately it isn't .....

Its almost as bad as last year, the online lags AGAIN !!! the offline is no real improvement, online lobbies are poor, server keep kicking you off, keepers are awful and apparently can't catch (they parry everything), the shooting is woeful and unrealistic and the super players (ronaldo, messi, ronaldinho etc) are again stupidly good and untouchable, the AI is awful again .... etc etc (i could go on)

It pains me that the game is such a let down again, as from pes 1 through to pes 5 it was pretty much the only game i ever played and never out of my console. The last few installments have been sooooo dissapointing.

I haven't yet played fifa 09 but i did give 08 a shot and i wasn't that bad (i never ever thought i'd play fifa and admit it was good). Now i'm contemplating getting Fifa 09 and getting rid of PES 09.

It is, but it's still fundementally 08 with a few improvements. If you hated 08 then you will this. The key things, some of which you may have seen in Euro 08 if you played that, are significantly improved team AI. They now make better runs, intelligently overlap the wings and get into better space. If a forward is about to make a run through the line of defence they'll point their direction as they're about to set off so you can judge the pass. Physics is now much improved, with strength, positioning and momentum coming more into play on standing tackles, and sliding tackles are now improved depending on which leg you catch. Be A Pro Seasons is just brilliant, a fantastic addition (that by all accounts embarrasses Be A Legend on PES 09), as is the 10v10 online (every player bar the goalkeeper is controlled by an individual player, you can set up your own teams and enter leagues). Try the demo.

I've played both games FIFA looks absolutely brilliant, I just prefer Pro Evo.

That might be due to the fact that i've had every game since ISS on the PS1. FIFA is just too slow for me, but that's probably because i'm used to speed and the arcade style play of Pro Evo.

Pro Evo has, and will always have, its annoying quirks that will always make my brain itch, the team names, the music etc. But it does have some advantages other than gameplay. The player attribute diagrams for example, very good for sorting the good from the bad, especially if you like to randomise your games.

FIFA may bang on about how realistic the game is compared with actual football, but who plays 'realistic' football on these games. My methodology when playing Pro Evo is the get it forward as quick as possible, or get it to the fastest player on the pitch to burn off the centre halves. You don't see this very often unless you watch Bolton or Burnley week-in week-out.

I much prefer the slow, patient, passing game that you have to play on FIFA.

I live with my girl.

Pro Evo is definitely easier to pick up and play, FIFA is very difficult to master, but to call Pro Evo more realistic (especially when you've just admitted to not really learning FIFA properly) is just insane, the reason FIFA is difficult to pick up is because it's very realistic and requires a lot of patience and constant looking for that perfect off-the-ball run, rather than just getting the ball on the halfway line, running past 3 players and scoring from 40 yards. It's not for everyone, but it is a lot more like football.

I hadn't managed to play either game but decided on Friday to get one of them and went for Pro Evo. I can't compare it to FIFA 09 as I haven't played it yet but I can compare it to FIFA 08 which I did have and didn't particularly like - my opinion is that FIFA 08 is better!

I can't remember what the last Pro Evo I had was but it was on the XBOX and I think it was the second to last one before the 360 came out - I enjoyed playing that more than this one, no exaggeration. It's just too easy, passes go straight to your man without any effort (Ive been playing as Torino so not a top side!) and the opposition don't seem to be able to get the ball off you in midfield - you can walk straight through. I wish I had listened to the posters saying it's too arcadey, which it certainly is. If you like it like that fair enough but for me Pro Evo has been well and truly spoiled and has gone backwards on the new gen systems.

Im taking it to the swap shop and probably getting FIFA 09 in it's place so i'll post my comments about that game. Im no fanboy and will buy the next Pro Evo if it's better than FIFA but im definitely gonna play it first that's for sure.

Id give this version of Pro Evo 4/10 mainly because it's a new gen game and not as good as some of the old gen versions. If you like arcade style football games or haven't played many football games you'll probably like this but fans of the old Pro Evo (including me!) be warned TRY BEFORE YOU PLAY, YOU MAY BE VERY DISAPPOINTED.

Its nothing like the next gen version on the ps3 but its still meant to be rather good. It has more features than the next gen version I think.

Ive swapped Pro Evo for FIFA 09 and I far prefer the FIFA game by a long way. Agree with earlier posts that said that Pro Evo is more of an arcadey game whereas FIFA is slower and more 'realistic' football game - im not recommending FIFA to anyone as a football game that is genuinely like the real thing but it is compared to Pro Evo. They used to be the other way round on the PS2/Xbox consoles in my opinion.

FIFA can still improve and hopefully EA won't overhaul the game completely and will build upon what they have here. The licensed leagues and competitions of FIFA also give it an extra edge although id still buy Pro Evo if I thought the gameplay was better.
