Can you put corks in the compost bin (sorry if it's a daft question)

I would have thought this to be a bad idea. In normal usage, a cork would be in a wine bottle in contact with an acidic liquid, yet this rarely affects it. You might need to break the cork up before trying to compost it. You might be better off with a lot of corks used as a mulch, although I suppose there is a danger they might blow away.

I've never put them in my compost, BTH what's the worst that can happen? I often have to seive out things that haven't composted properly before using my compost - usually woody bits that were too tough...Give it a go and let us know!

Well, after a few months, they have broken down quite a bit, so I've shoved them back in along with the rabbit litter, which I'm not sure if that should go in either tbh, but hey, it keeps the bin clear for other stuff and doesn't seem to be doing any harm. Can bones go in the compost bin? (chops etc?)

Rabbit litter is fine in compost; droppings etc from herbivores are ok. Bones are no good in compost though. More info here if you need it http://www.gardenorganic.org.uk/organicgardening/compost_pf.php

Oooh, a lavender hedge sounds lovely! My French lavender got all woody and is quite pathetic now. Glad to be of assistance with composting :thumbsup:

i compost my corks- just dont put the plastic ones in!!

the corks take ages but do break down- its the bacteria and life-forms which do the rotting, whereas wine's properties act as a preservative if anything.
