So who is your favourite comedian? I went with Billy Connelly in the end as he is so consistently funny. People say he swears too much, but that is just how he is, it's not because he thinks it is funnier. Not famous for his one liners, but this one is the funniest I can remember - There are two seasons in Scotland - Winter and July.

There are loads more comedians that come a close second -

Dave Gorman
Jimmy Carr
Ricky Gervais
Jack Dee
Peter Kay

I left Dave Gorman of the poll as I don't think he has a paricularly wide appeal yet.

I have gone for Jack Dee as he always looks so miserable and that makes me laugh! He seems a good sport, always doing stunts for charity.

Doh! I forgot to vote for billy!

Apparantly Jack Dee used to be a traditional comedian and was rubbish for years. It was only when he changed to his current style that he became famous.

I voted for Billy Connolly

Since Robin Williams is in there I suppose we can vote for Americans:

George Carlin

Edgy, political, intelligent, profane. He's like Bill Hicks' dad.

Fred Elliot, A said, Fred Elliot.
I know he's not a comic, but he ought to be.

My number one has got to be Bill Hicks.

Other good ones are Ross Noble, Dave Spikey and Rich Hall.

Yup, Bill Hicks without a doubt.

In Alabama, Bill Hicks was threatened after a show by three red-neck thugs who said: "Hey buddy, we're Christians, we don't like what you said." "So forgive me," he answered. :D

Ben Elton was fabulous when I went to see him at the City Hall some years ago. Don't think I stopped laughing the whole evening, and I was actually crying part of the time. Brilliant. Of course, it probably helped that the bulk of his material concerned being a student in Manchester in the 80s - he was so spot-on with his remarks it was uncanny.

He's lost his comedy gift now though - probably something to do with becoming a luvvie and not wanting to offend his right-on new friends. PC is not funny.

At the moment, my favourite stand-up is probably Jack Dee - so funny it hurts. I love dry wit, so he suits my humour perfectly. He seems like a really nice bloke as well.

I've only recently discovered the late, great Bill Hicks - now there's a Master of the art. Pure Genius - and fearless, as a great comic should be.

Special mention also to Morecambe and Wise, Jasper Carrott and, of course, another late, great - Dave Allen.

She started off doing stand up but went on to have a hugely underrated but hilarious sketch show on BBC2:

Catherine Tate

V.V. Funny!!

Dave Allen, Mike Harding & Bernard Manning.

I detest Chubby Brown - UNfunny :D

If we are allowed to vote for female stand-ups then I vote for Joan Rivers, I saw her show on TV once and she was brilliant.

My top three are Bill Hicks, Chris Rock and Eddie Murphy (in his early days).

I always plump for Ross Noble...he can speak random drivel about anything and make it hilarious..

"just imagine..like, 15 foot spiders...in a dress...speaking to your mam about whats for dinner"

and I kicked him around the footy pitch as a kid...the long haired geordie workshy fopp :)

William Melvin Hicks - R I P

"It's just those last two vertebrae. I swear, if men didn't have them you ladies out there in the audience would be sat here on your own.... lookin' at an empty stage..."

Johnny Vegas, he is just so funny he makes himself laugh all the time you can hardly tell what he's saying some of the time because he's in hysterics, and Ross noble too I agree with Boyface.

At the moment, Billy Connolly, Bill Bailey and Robert Mugabe.

Do not make the cardinal sin of forgetting about Richard Pryor, he is FUNNY.

Edit: Mugabe!? Timo dear have you been on the lunchtime gin again? :)

I would have voted for Bernard Manning but he isn't on the list. He may not be PC but then PC isn't very funny. I think a comedian should be judged by how funny he/she is rather than how PC.

seanyboy
18-05-2005, 12:45
I think Ross Noble is one of the funniest British stand-ups around today, I would also go with Lee Evans and Bill Bailey.

I saw Eddie Murphy Raw on Men and Motors a couple of days ago (twice) and I have to say that I didnt realise how brilliant a stand up he was, so he would get my American vote.

And Bernard Manning loses on both counts.

Most comedians are non-PC, it goes with the territory.

Kathythebean,
No, dear, it is not a case of over-indulgence with the old 'Gin and it'. Mugabe is hilarious. With his Hitler moustache, and multi-coloured shirts he looks rather like a neo-Nazi, African version of Timmy Mallet.

DanSumption
18-05-2005, 12:49
Timmy Mallet? Ewwww!

I once knew somebody who had a very, very bad drug experience in part due to Timmy Mallet. The only time I've ever heard of somebody throwing themselves out of a window when on drugs, and no, it wasn't because he thought he could fly, it was because he wanted to get away from Timmy.

But the less said about that, the better.

BTW, I saw Jimmy Carr a few weeks ago - he was hosting an awards ceremony which I attended. He was OK, but I certainly wouldn't include him in a list of the best stand-ups; Stephen Fry, who used to host the same ceremony, was a lot better.

Mind you, I did like some of Carr's joke's, especially one about that old chestnut, women complaining about men leaving the toilet seat up. "Men, how hard can it be to put the seat down?" Then, as an afterthought, "mind you, now she complains about me ******* all over the toilet seat, you can't win".

Greenback
18-05-2005, 12:58
I'm not really sure about Jimmy Carr - seems a bit like a watered-down hybrid of Tim Vine and Jack Dee to me.

Daniel Kitson's still the best comedian I've ever seen. He's sensational.

Some interesting suggestions here. A lot of them I have never seen so wouldn't like to comment. Completely forgot about Johnny Vegas, he would be in my top 10. If any of the hard working mods wants to add some of the popular ones mentioned on to the poll that would be great, as I cant. :D

Noticed nobody has voted for Robin Williams yet, I saw a dvd of one of his shows and it was really funny, didn't even know he did stand up until then. His humour is a bit American though.

Nobody has gone for Ricky Gervais either, I was unsure about him at first but his style has grown on me. Stand up probably isn't what he is best at though.

We went to see Harry Hill live - he is soooo different to his tv programme - he has tamed up quite a lot because when he first came on the tv a couple of years ago not many people got his humour and so he has had to adapt.

I think he is so so funny though so no abuse here my friend:hihi:

I personally went for Eddie Izzard - saw him in standup and I nearly peed my pants! Sorry!

Also like Peter Kay, Billy Connolly, Bill Bailey (v v good)

Ricky Gervais (when he covered the bible - the day God made the world - hilarious!)

a great comedian who was not on the poll was the late great bill hicks a man who's observation and dry delivery made him stand head and shoulders above others, he didnt do comedy to get a sit-com or film roles he did comedy for the love of opening peoples eyes to injustice, ignorance and general stupidity of people who take their own lives too serious and giving them a laugh but also leaving the thought that there is more
