View Full Version : Who is the best current Sheffield sportsperson?

JonHarrison
10-03-2003, 17:05
In my view, James Toseland

The Sheffielder riding in World Superbikes got a fantastic 2nd place against top world opposition in the 1st round of the World Championships.

I think that he has done very well with limited resources on the World stage.

Anyone agree or have you got a better example?

mikey
10-03-2003, 17:24
Michael Vaughan - Cricket

Tipped to be next England Captain

Justin Wilson - Do know much about him, but to make into the Elite F1 family deserves credit.

JonHarrison
10-03-2003, 17:34
Is Mikey Vaughan going to be captain of a B-list country in the World rankings?

Should this be put into perspective?

If England were truly challenging for a world crown then maybe he would be considered higher.

Toseland is riding last years bike and still comes 2nd.

Justin Wilson is with Minardi. I hope he will do big things but again he is not challenging for honours within his sport.

Agree?

What about David Seaman? he lived on the sheffield rotherham border :)

JonHarrison
10-03-2003, 17:59
Davey Seaman? Thought he was from the Rotherham/Barnsley border!

Anyway, he's about to retire now. A faded England keeper (still a good keeper but not cream of crop anymore).

Should he be considered a top star for the current?

C'mon guys, we can do better than this

mikey
10-03-2003, 19:09
Come on Jon, anybody who can get to the top ranks in any sport has to be given credit.

Although Justin Wilson will not be challenging for honours, last year he won the F3000 World Title, he is now just really starting at a new level.
Bit like a moving from 125cc to Superbikes.

Michael Vaughan - 1 man does not make a team, again to get into the team deserves credit

PS How did you make this a sticky???

JonHarrison
10-03-2003, 19:14
Fair dos mate. Was just trying to justify a top spot Sheffield sportsperson who is top (or very near to) of their field at the present.

All the others are well deserving and I am not trying to say that Sheffield is not proud of them. I am for one of all of them. It was a discussion to try to ascertain if there is a star at the moment that we were not aware of.

You could argue, Neil Warnock in a way.

Lets hear of some others, top of their fields on a world stage.

JonHarrison
10-03-2003, 19:15
When you make the new subject, near the bottom is an option to make it sticky.

:D

Michael_W

Michael Vaughan - a potential World Class batsman in an uninspiring England set up !

JonHarrison
10-03-2003, 19:17
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Vaughny will be the man to turn it round and inspire a new young side to glory again.

My fault - I forgot to turn this off. If anyone wants their thread to be "sticky" from now on, them please email or private message me. Fortunately for me Jon's posting is actually quite a good sticky - so I didn't get too much egg on my face!

Does Lee Westwood count as Sheffield? Anyway not that it matter now because his unfortunate dip in form counts him out for this title IMO.

JonHarrison
11-03-2003, 09:40
I think Lee westwood is from worksop.

I think we have to allow Sheffield and it's suburbs

Mike Blaisdell - without a doubt.
Steelers coach who took us to a Grand Slam and is more than half way there this season!!

JonHarrison
11-03-2003, 16:43
Mikes doing well without a doubt.

I am now opening this up to the UK as well seeing as we are missing out on a lot of top UK sportspersons.

So then, can I add Phil 'The Power' Taylor?

mikey
13-03-2003, 10:08
Nobody's mentioned Prince Naseem yet, got to be worth a mention, I know some would say he is past his best, but I think he will return

13-03-2003, 12:16
Michael Brown.....
Wish he would be a good sport ;-)

JonHarrison
13-03-2003, 17:23
Mikey Brown what a choice my dear.

Next season maybe (and it really pains me to say that) but in Div 1, cant allow him.

Prince Naseem, great in recent history but again, not at top of field at the moment.

Just thought, Johnny Nelson!

Been world champion for the last few years.

He has to be 'THE' SHEFFIELD CHAMPION.

YES??

JonHarrison

I know but he's still up there at the top of the world tree and was world champion for absolutely ages. He's No.1 contender.

NO. Anybody who knows boxing knows that Nelson is not a legitimate World Champion. He lost his last fight but somehow got the decision after yet another stink out. The guy has stunk more arenas and halls out that any other fighter I know. I should know. I was one of the more unfortunate people who paid to see his first world title shot many years ago against Carlos De Leon where Nelson and De Leon both moved around and watched each other for 12 rounds. You'd expect that of De Leon because he was champ. You have to take the title off the champion you can't expect to be given it. Anyway Nelsons claimed nerves were the problem, so he gets another shot against James Warring and does exactly the same thing, absolutley nothing and loses again. The guy moves up to Heavy wieght to challenge Henry Akinwade and what happens? he gets Disqualified for holding too much because he is frightened to death. Is this the same person whom you consider Sheffield's best sportsman? Admittedly so Nelson has transformed his career through lots of easy mismatches and seems to be making money which is good for him.

JonHarrison

Oooh Lickzzz. I am deeply sorry that you had to sit through that embarrasing and very boring title match at the City Hall. I watched it on TV and that was bad enough!

I have to agree with most of your points but, was talking to Johnny recently (up until then I was most definitely not a fan) and he maintains that he did have an absolute stinker in that 1st fight but that he has fought all the number 1 contenders and anyone else that wanted to fight him

He does not like boxing though. That is probably why he doesnt like being hit.

Any better suggestions?

After this next Grand Prix hopefully we can honour Toseland (bikes) and Wilson (cars)

mikey
21-03-2003, 10:35
So in summary we have

Johnny Nelson
James Toseland
Justin Wilson
Prince Naseem
Michael Brown
Phil Taylor
Mike Blaisdell
Lee Westwood
Neil Warnock
Michael Vaughan
David Seaman

any more before we have our vote?

Jon wittle out the non contenders and lets have a vote in a few days time.

JonHarrison

Well, boxing is hard enough when you love the game, so I can't imagine how hard it is when you don't like it. Boxing is often about politics and you never know who to believe. On one hand nobody might want to fight Nelson on the other hand he might say that nobody wants to fight him because he doesn't want ot risk losing to them himself.

JonHarrison
21-03-2003, 13:53
Basically he was very honest and said that no one wishes to fight him as they look crap because his faights are crap.

He is a great bloke. Dead honest.

oh well, if he is saying that nobody wishes to fight him because it's bad for their reputation and/or it might not sell tickets then that's fair enough. I thought you meant he was saying nobody wants to fight him because they will lose.

James Toesland
is defo best sheff sportsman this young sheffield lad is going to make a big impact on world superbkies this year. GO JAMES and why does the sheffield star hardly if ever report about this home grown talent?

JonHarrison
26-03-2003, 14:21
Well said Debss.

Was sat next to Michael Vaughan last night. A major Sheffield talent (even though he does support Sheffield Wednesday) and without doubt the next England captain.

I am undecided between Vaughny and Tosey and Justin Wilson as to who is going to be the best current sports star.

Please cast your votes NOW!!!

26-04-2003, 18:35
:)

I think for one reason and another all those that have been nominated
are good at their sport but some of them are only in the sport for 10 15 years.

I think you should decide about who has influenced sport in a certain field for many years.

JonHarrison
28-04-2003, 09:37
Derek Dooley then?

29-04-2003, 00:46

JonHarrison
29-04-2003, 10:17
A true talent on the world stage is our James. C'mon Sheffield Star, let's start championing our other Sheffield talent. Give him a big spread every monday in the sports section.

Our footie teams are local, our World Superbike challenging star is on the WORLD stage.

We have had a World Champion Downhill Mountainbiker in Steve Peat, who for tha last few years has been the main man in the sport.
Every kid in the world knows who he is, most wouldn't have a clue who anyone mentioned above is...

JonHarrison

Sorry, I'm not familiar with MMA organisations.

I think he's undefeated at a UK level and is being touted as the UK's most promosing pro for the world stage.

Strange, I originally looked on Sherdog and nothing came up. Yes, he looks an outstanding prospect. Spent time learning the Gracie style/techinique which has evolved MMA. Only very young so lots of time to develop. Who knows he could be the next Vitor Belfort. I realyl hope he decides to compete in Pride instead of UFC though.

Just one minor point, Justin Wilson is from Moorgate, Rotherham, James Toseland from Wales, Rotherham, and as for David Seaman coming from the border of Sheffield/Rotherham/Barnsley, he's from Kimberworth, Rotherham. He went to Ferham Junior, about 200yards from Millmoor and Kimberworth Comp, he played for Rotherham boys, so I reckon that makes him a Rotherham lad, don't you?

We don't have that many WORLD champions in Sheffield and Peat doesn't seem to get any credit for it... a shame really

Downhill mountain biking world champion?? Hate to say it but it is a minority mainly participation sport so the main contenders will come from sports which are simple to understand like football or has good press exposure like Grand Prix racing or cricket. My vice is F1 stockcar racing and hardly any of our drivers are known in their own villages never mind the big city. If Paul Harrison from Rotherham won the "World Final" he'd no doubt get a paragraph in the Star and a page in the Rotherham Record. Its just how it is. Sports editors are not very adventurous and tend to stick with the good old stuff, footy, cricket and at present Justin Wilson. Good luck to Steve Peat anyway.

Hi there Ross.

Been monitoring your career ever since the mention above. Sherdog seems to be somewhat behind with the results of your record. They have you listed at been 7-1.

What did you learn from the France match in July

i want to and will become the best middleweight in the country. Hopefully ill get some fights on big shows in the usa and japanm, and then one day hit ufc or pride, i like both shows.

i learnt how to take a beating, i gave up and i will never do it again, i learnt to never think im too far ahead to loose, and i learnt how to give a royal ass whippin out.

sherdog arent behind some of the fights were amateur and no classed on their records.

Thanks for the answers. I am pleased to learn that you are looking at the big organisations which is where the worldwide recognition is and the money ;)

Who's your favourite fighter? Seen as your middleweight you happen to be in my favourite fighters division - Kazushi Sakuraba. Although he seems to be on the slide now.

Yes I think the time is right for him to bow out. He's nothing more to offer or prove. He's had some fantastic wins.

Matt Hughes is so dominant at that weight. So far he doesn't look like been beaten. I just hope he can remain injury free in the future.

Of course, I have to agree with Jagielkaluva though, the blades number 17 is also very talented and a **** hot defender. He then retired from the sport, only to make a come back in his early forties "just to see what he could do",and in his second year back,he wins the premier calander, beating all and sundry, and top riders half his age.
But then again,as a cyclist we dont get any coverage in the papers, even the local one's.
