Laws has emergency defender fund

Laws' side lost 4-1 to Wolves on Saturday despite leading
Sheffield Wednesday manager Brian Laws hopes to sign a defender in time for Saturday's visit of Preston.

Laws has told BBC Radio Sheffield that the club has money available to sign a player in extreme circumstances.

"We're really pushed to the limits, particularly defensively and they accept that and that's something I'm going to be able to do."

The Owls boss is looking for a right- back after Richard Hinds was ruled out for three months with a broken leg.

"I've got one or two options already and I'll be looking at their fitness and seeing where they are over the next few days," he added.

Good decision, with our squad being low on defenders at the moment.

However........

Is it just me that thinks that delaying a loan signing in defence, that we've badly needed for a while now, until 72 hours before the Sheffield Derby is a mistake?

The new loanee, whoever he is, will need time to gel into the squad and a debut in such a big game is a risk.

Also a lot of teams don't like loaning their players out until after games have finished.

Yes, I get that......

But ideally, I would want a player to come in to such an important game with a weeks training with the team under his belt. Perhaps taking him on loan at the start of the week?

I remember us having the same with some nobody we had on loan from Leeds when we threw him in at the deepend in a Sheffield derby!!

Heard on the radio summat like 'Sheffield Wednesday', (drove under a motorway bridge, so missed the next bit) blah, blah, blah Premiership defender .... next bridge ... blah, blah, blah, so hearing between the lines, I think Wednesday may have got someone in. We'll find out more tomorrow (Friday).

BL's not made many iffy signings, so I'll trust him with this one an'all.
He's not the type of bloke who'll sign sombody just for the sake of it.

The thing with Brian Laws' signings, is that compared to what you already have - they aren't going to be bad signings.

I don't wish that to sound bad, but that is just how it is.

dont know about laws not making any iffy signings, who signed clarke? as for this signing, cant turn down any defender really, he has experience of the championship so he knows what its about. he's only here for a month so if he's that bad we're not stuck with him at least

What are you on about? There's nothing wrong with the majority of Wednesday's players. Inexperienced players mostly in a thin squad, but still decent players.

I agree, they're a bunch of Average Joe's capable of getting the odd decent result but also prone to the odd beating.

A team of has beens, chances or youth players.....i can't fault Brian Laws for the commitment and effort he gets out of some of them.

That's true! Oh well, we might be in a league of throw backs but that doesn't make the derby any less important!

C'mon Stockers, who you got in your banana bunch then, who are sooooo superior? United are also a team of average Joes. Can't see any premier clubs queuing up to take your 'top' players? I say it again, you're not Man U. :)

you keep saying were not man united but neither are reading and plymouth.
everyone is saying beattie this and beattie that but i've a feeling howard is the one who's going to be the main man in our victory. and billy sharp will love all the attention on beattie. also have a look at our right back (if he plays) young kyle naughton a future premiership player if ever there was one.

Fairy Nuffsky, I've already said earlier that Howard could be a proper thorn in our side. I've heard he looks quality (for this league) and Naughton has had great reviews but I can't see him 'hurting' us.
Beattie, Sharp, Howard (and to some extent Speed) are the ones who'll hurt us given the chance, the rest don't really concern us.
I'm sure BL will have plans for shackling this little lot.
Like the way you slipped in 'in our victory' on your post.
Can't fault your loyalty and confidence, but it may come back to haunt you. ;)
