View Full Version : Buy or rent? Buy or rent? Dilemma!
Juicyb125 17-05-2005, 17:21 Ok so sussed out my areas I want to live in, however, recently read a FT report which said that maybe it would be better to rent at the moment as the house prices are due to drop.
Does anyone have any opinions on this?
We are relocating so maybe it would be better to put our money in the bank and rent for 6 months until we are totally sure of the area we want to live in.
Phew! My mind is a total buzz!
neeeeeeeeeek 17-05-2005, 17:26 I would have said it would be worth renting if you are relocating, you will be able to check out areas where you might like to live and be closer to places you might want to look at.
ls212121 17-05-2005, 17:47 We're in exactly the same position! Really wanted to get a foot on the property ladder and all that, but keep reading things/hearing things that make us want to hang on for a while.
Just out of interest, which areas have you decided on?
All scare mongering IMO, property always increases in value in the long term, the short term fluctuates thats all.
Every property owner is on the right track.
On a bigger scale, companies like Gap McDonalds don't just make food and clothes, they own land in the most popular places in the world.
If you can afford, buy, but buy wisely:)
lazyfish 17-05-2005, 19:09 We had to decide this when we moved up here last year. If we'd bought straight away then we'd probably have just gone for a place in Walkley cos it was one of the few areas we knew. In the end we decided to rent for six months even though we owned our last house. Which worked out really well, because we've ended up buying in Meersbrook, and I love it here and I'd never have known about it if we hadn't rented for a bit first.
No offence to anyone in Walkley like - it's lovely over there - but I'm really glad we ended up here.
I'd say rent first just to see what the area is like.
Juicyb125 18-05-2005, 18:06 Ok guys you have convinced me - renting it is!
I can then buy wisely when I know the areas :-)
Thanks for all your messages
xx

Thanks for the offer, but we are looking to rent a house with a garden as we have a young son.
Your offer of financial advice is most generous and I will look up your website and maybe give you a call.
Thanks again

Rent rent rent
Dont be told otherwise

my personal opinion is that you should buy. If you don't like the area you can always move, time spent renting is money thrown away.

Easy to say, but as we know not always easy to do!

it might not be easy, but if you make a decision to rent instead then it won't even be an option.
Consider rent as a short term solution and keep looking for somewhere to buy, worst case is that you don't find anywhere and all you've lost is time looking.

Thanks - that is what we intend to do now - put money in bank and rent until we find something we really like and in an area suitable for us!
Thanks for all your comments. It has been great.:P
