View Full Version : Why would anyone keep a deadly Puff Adder in Sheffield?

I read in the paper a while back that someone in Sheffield was keeping a puff adder (http://www.ultimatefieldguide.com/puff_adder_-_bitis_arietans.htm) as a pet in a flat.

For those who don't know this is one of the world's most venemous serpants. 50% of bites from a puff adder prove fatal.

What sort of idiot keeps such an amimal as a pet in a Sheffield flat. I just can't imagian the mentality of someone wanting to do this. What if it escaped? It would cause havac.

Exactly...because it can happen. We have a butterfly farm which is just across the A57 from us and once we had one of their snakes in our garden!!!! What an idiot!!!! By the way, do you know where abouts in Sheffield this crazy person lives...just so I can stay away.

I do see your point, but what if it didnt escape, and was kept securely? Remeber it still has to bite you for its bite to maybe prove fatal.

Or apply your argument to other things

In almost 100% of cases, buses that hit children prove fatal. Lets ban buses (maybe not such a bad idea)

P.S. I'm not the guy who has one!

It's only one snake, not a herd of wildebeest.

If it escaped it would probably die.

Has anyone got a largish shark for sale?

Preferred colour grey - would accept blue or purple.

Fins optional

Don't you have to have a special license if you wish to keep dangerous animals, including venomous snakes?

Yes it's called a Sites license or something. You have to apply to the council if your planning on keeping an Anaconda or something.

But quite often people go to places like Holland for Snakes Shows where they can purchase them and bring them back.

I dread to think what would happen if my pet blue whale escaped. Blubber everywhere, no doubt.

Apparently this person didn't have a licence for the snake and so it was taken off him. presumably it is now in a zoo where it can be looked after properly by trained people who actually know what they are doing.

I just wonder if all those people who think it is 'cool' to keep such pets would like one living next door to them. I know I certainly wouldn't. Pets are supposed to be cute and cudley - try cuddling a puff adder and it will probabley be the last thing you ever do.

No they're not:

pet (pt)
n.
1. An animal kept for amusement or companionship.
2. An object of the affections.
3. A person especially loved or indulged; a favorite:

I hope you dont have any goldfish, I'm pretty sure they dont enjoy cuddling either. :heyhey:

Yeah it's a DWA licence (dangerous wild animal) and you get them from the council. They inspect your premises and then issue them. Think it's currently around £150/year give or take £20

Yup you have to also be over 18 and have a previous history of about 2 years of keeping exotic pets.
