View Full Version : Hillsborough Fooball Ground - how much af a problem for residents?

Hi,

My partner and I are seriously considering buying a house in Hillsborough off Middlewood Rd (Lennox Rd) where the Owls ground is not that far away at all. We haven't been in Sheffield long so don't know how much the footie affects the area.

In short my girlfriend is worried about hoolies trashing our cars etc and less dramatically parking on match days. I'm not too bothered as there's only a match once every 2 weeks or so (ok probably more regularly with mid week games) and in fact quite like the idea of adopting them as my second team.

If they go up I guess the attendances will be around 25,000 which must be a strain on the area - so any S6 dwellers got any views?

Thanks

Well my boyfriend lives at the other side of Hilsborough Park and whenever there is a match on we can not even park anywhere near his house.

I live near there so can help. Parking is a problem every day, if you can live with not being able to park outside your house on most days and the not being able to park on a match days in any of the surrounding area, usually not at all. Then you will be fine. The parking is the main problem here.

We've only had one incident since moving here in 2003. The whole road had the car wing mirrors knocked off - this wasn't on a match day/night.

Forgot to mention - we don't go drinking down at Hillsborough corner, where there is sometimes a bit of trouble/shouting - usual drunken antics. Lennox Road is just far away though and doesn't get the problems like the roads nearer to the corner.

I was brought up In hillsborough within a few hundred yards of the stadium, and lived there up until 19 years old. My best friend at school lived at the top of dorothy road, the next road along from lennox road.
Yes it does get busy on match days, but you soon get used to leaving trips until when the match is on at 3pm, then you can get out and do your shopping or whatever, and get back easy. The football crowds were never a problem even when they were in the top division. There is a parking problem, but as long as you are parked up 45 mins before the match starts there is no probs. When they come out, it is very busy for 15 minutes, and half an hour later it's quiet again.
I don't know if they still do it but the local pub (the park)used to have passes for the locals so they could get in on a match day. But I rarely went in that pub anyhow because it was quite rough and I preferred other ones.

I never saw any hooligans and know of no damage on anybody's car or property, due to football crowds.

Thanks for your replies. Just have to be tactical with your parking I guess!!

I agree. One drunken night, we pinched some road cones!!! So now when we go out before the match....we put the cones outside of my boyf house. I know it's cheeky but so is parking outside someones drive!!! plus it works and thats all that counts when you live there. If you suggest that to your girlfriend...she might just go for it.

hi, i lived on dorothy road (next to lennox) until a couple of months ago and i can deffinitely recommend living there.

Dont let the football put you off... im not a football fan at all but its far away enough that you only get people trying to park on the road on a saturday and you just see some walking past. so it didnt bother me too much. other than that i'd say it's better to live there than nearer hillsborough corner because overall it is very peaceful and safe. not to mention a stone throw away from the tram.

Hi - we live just off Middlewood Road about as close to the ground as you would be.

Been here one year, have had absolutely no problems, though as has been said before, tactical parking is in order!

I like living so close to somewhere that's such a big bit of the community and often throw open the windows and try to guess the score from the noise coming from the ground.

Wouldn't change it for a second. Still...if they go up and more fans come back.....:)

We used to live in Lower Walkley and found it hell to park on match-days - even though we were not exactly close to the Hillsborough ground, the street would be full of cars parking there to get the tram up to Leppings Lane.

We must have been among the few Sheffielders constantly hoping Wednesday would go down so that fewer fans would come and park on our street! :)

There has to be a degree of common sense though, and I think DT77's doing the right thing and asking the question before moving there. Moving near a stadium is obviously going to have some issues. To be honest, it's only every other Saturday and not the entire year and if you're ready for it then it's not too much of an issue. Just don't plan on nipping out for ten minutes at 2 o'clock and still expect to find a parking space when you return.
I've not seen any footy-related violence yet either. I think mostly because I avoid the Blue Ball on match day afternoons.

I live near the Blades ground, and , yes, near *any* stadium, on a match day, (or evening) you will get some congestion, for the duration of the match.

When I left home, I moved to a place that was a few hundred yards from the Hillsboro ground, too, and it was just the same, there.

I grew up round Bramall Lane, and it has always been the same (for both ends of the city). Thirty years ago and more, my father could not park when he got home from work on a Saturday afternoon. it could get quite frustrating.

However, if you accept that a certain measure of problems come with the territory, and, as others have said here, you park and travel tactically, then you shouldn't have too many problems.

Thanks for all your replies. We've now written off S6 (my gf was never too keen really!) and are looking at Meersbrook S8.

I'm moving to bang by the ground at the weekend (Wadsley Lane) - looking forward to it and by the sounds of the comments on here should be OK.

Been warned off the Park Hotel though.....

A freind of mine lives up one of the side roads off Middlewood Road about 500 yds from the ground. He returned home one Saturday afternoon to find a car parked on his drive. He waited til the match finished and as the supporters approcahed their car, he gave them a right earful, so they slashed the tyres on his van.

I live on Dorthy Road. No problems parking at all when there is no match on. When the football is on then it can be frustrating but I always find somewhere even if its right up at the top end.

Only a fairly small part of S6 is affected by match day parking / crowds. See link below for size of S6.

IMHO Walkley is better than Meersbrook for access to both city centre and countryside.

Then he should have taken their number plate down and reported them to the police who would have been able to arrest them for criminal damage.

I'd move your cones and park there anyway.

The Park Hotel is fine, you'll get no trouble there. Unless you wear a United top.

yeah have to agree, its nicer to drive thru wed crowds rather than united. apart from the other day when a young girl stepped out infront of me next to the chippy. luckily id seen her, but her dad had the cheek to give me a nasty glare...should have clipped her!:P

If you wear a Crewe Alex top, you may get some sympathy...
