View Full Version : How old are you? What was first record/cd you bought?
BoppinBruce 17-05-2005, 08:00 I read with interest the birthdays that are posted each day, and I wish each of them Happy Birthday.
But I like to work out peoples ages, and be honest with this please, what was first 45rpm/Lp/CD Single you bought. And was it a 45/Lp/ or CD Single?
You may be giving your age away if you post. Its your choice!
19.. Think my first was The Fugees!
Ousetunes 17-05-2005, 08:13 Happy to oblige and prepared for any flak that follows!
I'll be 36 in June and the first record I remember buying - big bruvva had to buy it for me though - was Angelo by Brotherhood of Man. That's still a wicked song....
I also recall around the same time, summer 1977 getting Danny Mirror's 'I remember Elvis Presley'. Gosh, that was atrocious.
These were vinyl 45s. The first LP I owned was probably the offical Walt Disney World LP which I got whilst visiting Disney World in Florida in 1980.
And the first CD I got were Christmas presents, along with my first CD player in 1985. Band On The Run by Wings and Paul McCartney's just released Give My Regards To Broadstreet. Possibly the first that I actually went and bought were, I'm afraid to say, Madonna's Like A Virgin and her first eponymous CD.
Right, let's have it.
The first LP I bought was Innervisions by Stevie Wonder, I got it from the record "shop" in the door of the Castle Market.
I think I played it about 20 times back to back until I knew the words.
I was still at shool so I would have been about 15.
technophobe 17-05-2005, 08:21 38 just..... boooooo hooooooo
First record I actually bought was Ghosts of Japan by Japan. Gosh I thought he was sooooooooo gawjus!
I never really bought that many records but do remember sitting on a sunday afternoon with my finger on the record button of my tape recorder recording all the new hits, what was funny though was that my budgie used to sing along and thats all you could hear on playing them back.
:o

HarrietStar 17-05-2005, 09:28 I think the first single I had was kylie minogue - I should be so lucky.
the first albums i was given by my parents was a 'soft reggae' compilation and Now 19!
However, when I was 11, the first album I bought was Blur - The Great Escape :)
redrobbo 17-05-2005, 09:34 Single, "Walk On By", by Dionne Warwick. I was just 16, on holiday in New York. I had to buy a separate plastic insert to play it when I got home (the holes in the centre of American records were larger than their British equivalents, and the plastic insert effectively reduced the diameter).
BoppinBruce 17-05-2005, 09:36 Yes Red Rob, they were known as Spiders
rainbow2411 17-05-2005, 09:40 I bought Rick Nelson's "Its Late" and hubby's first record, bought when he was 13, was "See You Later Alligator" you can work out his age from that, no way are we going to volunteer such information, oldies but goodies.

cobaltblue 17-05-2005, 12:08 David Bowie - Modern Love purchased from Woolco, remember them? I think I was about 10. I still have it kicking around somewhere, nothing to play it on though!!
KATIEB_23 17-05-2005, 12:17 I'm 23 and my first record was 'Heaven is a place on Earth' by belinda Carlisle when I was very little. It was a 45 and I used to play it on one of those battery operated kiddie's turntables.
The first album I bought for myself was 'Now 20' on cassette - I cant believe they're on 'Now 60' now, that makes me feel old!

LMAO Think how old you would feel if you remembered "Now thats what I call music" - the original. :o And anyone else remember "Raiders of the Pop Charts" compilations?
metalman 17-05-2005, 12:32 Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield, when it first came out.
I would dearly love to be able to say that it was something like Stevie Wonder's 'Innervisions' album, as can Nick2. To my eternal shame, it was 'Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Titch's 'Greatest Hits'. Hopefully, my contributions to entertainment threads reveal a ripening, refinement and maturation of musical taste since then.
To be fair though Timo, I think my second purchase was a Bananarama single.

I'm 33 and my first record was Dexy's Midnight Runners "come on Eileen" and Man to Man "the stripper"
seanyboy 17-05-2005, 13:02 I'm 20 yrs old, and the first record I remember getting is the theme song to the Ninja turtles movie! It was by "Partners in Kryme" and I think it was called "turtle power"! Lol

I didn't even have a record player when I bought my 1st 45, I used to borrow the next door neighbours "Dansette". I Bet "owdlad" remembers the "Dansette". Red Vinyl top white sides. You could stack a load of 45's on it and it would play for ages. :heyhey:
rainbow2411 18-05-2005, 20:29 You could drive your folks mad by leaving the arm "off" and playing the same Billy Fury record all night
Phanerothyme 18-05-2005, 20:37 35
first single - never bought one.
first LP - Jeff Wayne's "War of the Worlds" - 1983
first EP - Southern Death Cult - 1985
My most loved LP when I was a child was "Dougal and the Blue Cat" - an utterly bizzare Magic Roundabout adventure.
miniminch 18-05-2005, 21:23 36
When I was young my dad owned a record store in the norh west - we had a copy of every new release since I can remember. They were all over the house. Every cupboard and drawer was a musically journey on its own. From about four I had found in the attic Sargent Peppers and Abbey Road and some Hendrix LPs which I used to play constantly. My own musical journey went from Bowie - eno - via electronica - associates - depeche mode - PWEI all the way to funky break beats and house music that i mainly listen now. And I've always listened to classical music all the way through. I like to term my tastes as Dominant, residual and immergent but not necessarially in that order.
Residual = what i alway listen to.
Dominat = is what i'm into at anyone time
Immergent= is what coming through and might be the next big thing
excuse the spelling:D
42 - First record bought was double album of The Wall by Pink Floyd!!!

Gosh how weird! This is just what I used to do when the top twenty was on, on radio 1 on a Sunday. I had to put a cloth over the budgie cage to stop them tweeting whilst my favourite tracks were on. I would pray that no-one would come to the door in case the dog barked when I was recording. It was fab when I got a tape recorder with an "in built" microphone. (no more sound effects from the pets)
I loved Japan and couldn't make up my mind who I would prefer to marry, Dave Sylvian or Steve Jansen. I took Ghosts to school to play in our music lesson, but only a small minority were impressed by it though.
Anyway back to the origional thread. The first record I got was a 45 rpm. My brother bought it for himself, got wazzed off with it then gave it to me for Christmas. I was about 11. (Cheapskate!)
indie_sheff 18-05-2005, 22:42 19 yrs..first album bought: michael jackson off the wall album.

Excellent choice sir! Three absolutely wonderful (not to say essential) albums from 1969
BoppinBruce 19-05-2005, 07:40 Rainbow, a fellow Billy Furyite. The best British artist never to have a number 1 hit.
Was it a Dansette by any chance?
rainbow2411 19-05-2005, 08:25 No I think it was called a Regentone ( but not to sure), it was my pride and joy
k_enny26 19-05-2005, 08:30 Return to innocence by enigma on cassette, what was I thinking? I was young
First 45 was The Kinks & Apeman I think, later swapped it with my brother for Zabadak (think that's how it was spelt) by Dave Dee, Dozy, Mick & Titch. At least I think it was - it was all a very long time ago. First 33 was one of those Top of the Pops jobs that were not by the original artists. My last music purchase was a cd by Keane, I likr to think my taste has inproved?
BoroughGal 20-05-2005, 19:26 The first record I pestered for (and was bought by my brother) was Brotherhood of Man's "Angelo" (well, I was only 6 years old!)
I then bought myself Happy House by Siouxie & the Banshee's (never did follow up this punky/gothy phase though), The Police's "Spirits in the Material World" and Blondies "Call Me", all in one go.
I look at this and think I was actually quite cool for a 9 and 10 year old. However, I did end up liking, in my early teens, Paul Young, King, Bronski Beat etc, so I didn't stay cool for long.
And just to reply to Technophobe - WOW! Ghosts by Japan! I loved it at the time and still love it now - I still occasionally listen to the Tin Drum album! And David Sylvian - DREAMBOAT!! Good choice of first record!
PS - I'm 33.
The first records bought for me by my dad were "She Loves You", "I Want To Hold Your Hand" (Beatles), and "Morningtown Ride" (The Seekers).
The first single I bought for myself was "Coz I Luv You" (Slade), which I lent to my boyfriend at the time, and never got back.
First album I bought was one of Status Quo's ~ can't remember the name of it, but I still have it stored in my album box.
First CDs were Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Abbey Road (Beatles).
PhilMurray 24-05-2005, 18:17 first single was............crazy horses.........the osmands
first album...........new boots and panties...ian dury and the blockheads.
i'm 40
first single was five - Everybody get up
