View Full Version : Theft of council property - how do you feel?
I was driving through Woodhouse and noticed that, not only has a large slice of an open green space been concreted (ages ago) to create a driveway to a purchased property and has since been lined with those berluddy conifers that grow 40ft high, but a large flower bed has sprouted alongside (recently).
I know it is possible to 'adopt' scraps of land by 'incorporating' them into your garden, and claiming you have maintained the land for x number of years, but this is council property - it belongs to us all!!!!
People will no longer be able to cross this green without making the detour around this massively extended garden, and nearby properties will lose their view of Shirebrook valley.
If it were me driving the council grass tractor, I'd have mown down the 'weeds' spoiling the grass
How do others feel about this situation?
I believe it is theft from us all
Kristian 17-05-2005, 00:24 Apologies (in advance) for this being a tad off topic, but surely all property is theft anyway? I own my own home, but why? Well, because I bought it, and so did the person who owned it before me, and the person before, and so on. At some point though, someone just claimed it, albeit probably hundreds of years ago.
Surely this is the case with all land and property? Building materials are either stone or brick, dug from the ground of other 'stolen' property, so should anybody really own anything? Or am I just going a bit mad? Think about it.
redrobbo 17-05-2005, 01:43 Strix - I agree with you about theft of OUR property, assuming this is council land. Report your concerns to one of your three Woodhouse councillors, Majorie Barker, Ray Satur or Mick Rooney, c/o Town Hall. Give details of location. It is possible that the person concerned has purchased the land from the council - but this can be checked out.
Kristian - you posed the question "so should anybody really own anything?"
If you follow this line of thinking to its natural conclusion, you have communism. If you want to experience this political philosophy in practise, I think nowadays you are only left with living in North Korea. Says it all really.

Actually, if you follow the augument through to it's logical conclusion, you are left with true socialism not communism (which is merely a form of socialism)!

I've come across Marx & his 'all property is theft' claim. I've come across that idea taken to its logical conclusion with communism (using biblical examples) but I thought that socialism was the stage (in Marxist theory) between capitalism & communism. The bit before proper collective ownship is reached?
Meanwhile going back on to the subject
Interesting turn of phrase -Our Land.
Something that is too readily forgotten when plots of land are being sold off willy nilly by the council.
Irrespective of peoples protests.
why is all property ownership theft?
If a patch of land didn't belong to someone in the first place, then the first person to say "this is mine" has established valid ownership, they haven't stolen it from anyone, unless you want to attribute ownership to 'nature' or some such nonesense.

In that case I'd have expected a fence to be erected around the purchased land straight away, rather than a large flower bed being left exposed to kids playing football and wandering dogs *ahem*
It just smacks of exploitation
Up to about 2 years ago anyone wishing to claim land off of the council had to prove unrestricted use of the land for twelve years. I believe that this law has been modified but I don't know to what extent.
The answer is to create enough of a furore over this if you don't like what is happening and if the council are aware they can take steps to prevent them having any title to it.
As one previous contributor said let Mick Rooney know, he does seem to do quite a good job for the area.
Just out of interest where is this????
What is the world comming to when people just plant flowers anywhere they like.

So they don't come into contact with 'tea leaves'.

No, but I know which one you are talking about - what a bloody cheek running a 500 foot long concrete drive across council owned open green space.
It was just that when I left Sheffield, I didn't know there'd been additions.
Some interesting comments made.
What about 'common land' laws.
The less there is, the less WE can do with it!
Nomads and no mads (sorry couldn't help it), land is money!
WallBuilder 17-05-2005, 22:58 The council has lots of land and property and they seem quite happy at times to have it become an overgrown, garbage encrusted or deerelict place. However if some-one has just taken that bit of land the council seem to appear out of the woodwork and want it back, so it's probably been bought it.I seem to remember hearing some where that the council were having an auction to sell off land and property that they no longer wanted.

Not huge great straight lines across an open green though.
There are people who have adopted 3ft strips alongside their property that were overgrown with weds before. I've no objection to that. It's disturbing when somebody claims a piece of land 3 times the size of their own plot though
